  • Anyone replaced their 87 litre fuel tank for a bigger one?

    Greetings All,

Has anyone replaced the factory tank for a long range one? I'm heading that way but would like hear your opinions.

I had a great time over Easter driving in sand tracks but used 14.5 lt per 100 kms doing it. I want to do the Simpson desert in 2012. The small tank just won't do and I don't really want to be adding jerry cans to the roof rack.

I contacted a mob in Bayswater who reckons they could probably remove and replace the existing tank with a 160 litre tank, subject to checking the car out.

If they can fit 160 litres why did Toyota short shrift the 3 doors???

    cheers
    Dulcie

long range automotive http://www.longrangeautomotive.com.au do a 137 lt tank for the rear which gives you about 220 lt all up. This is the one I am thinking off as I prep for Simpson desert in 2014

According to the Long Range Automotive website, the 137 litre tank is a replacement only tank for the SWB 3 door models of the 150 series.

You don't need a long range tank to cross the Simpson. CSR would benifit but not the Simpson. Just a lot more weight to carry.

Yes it replaces the current 65 LT tank with a 137 LT tank, giving 220 LT. I don't think anyone is adding a third tank.

For the Simpson, a lot of clubs are requiring a minimum of 200 LT per vehicle due to the recent rains causing a change in the normal route. Without it they are needing to many expensive fuel drops.

Current tank in the 150 series 3 door is 87litres.
As the new tank (of 137litres) replaces the current tank (of 87litres),then the total fuel you have is 137 litres, so you are gaining an extra 50 litres by replacing the existing tank.

I think your confused... the SWB only has one tank from the factory. (Your posting in the 3 door/SWB section)

Typical Club BS. With 200lts I can zig zag across the Simpson between Mt Dare and Birdsville twice, including taking the Eyre Ck bypass and play on big Red and I drive a 1kz.

                  Hi Bassett,

Yep that's the mob I've booked to put their 135 litre tank in my Prado. The only drawback is you can't reprogram the car's computer to get the cruising range kilometers re-calibrated but everything else will work fine. I can live with that.

                  Thanks all for your replies.

                  cheers

                    Dulcie,

Let us know how it all goes?

The long range tank is on my wish list (that is when I eventually get my new SX)

                      Dear Interested,

I now have a long range tank installed in my Prado. The guys at Long Range Automotive were great. We had a slight hiccup.. they'd done their original tank spec on a SWB 150 which had a Hayman Reese towbar. My car has a genuine Toyota Tow bar which meant a bit of a redesign and a couple of weeks later I had my long range tank. It has approx 135 litres of usable fuel and apart from taking out a bank loan to fill her up, everything is as it should be.

                      cheers

                        Sounds great, Dulcie.

Does the computer now take into consideration the additional fuel in the tank when giving you information on Kms left to travel etc?

                        Thanks

Hi Dulcie, what was the final installed cost of the tank ? It is certainly on my wish list. Do you have some photos' ? does the larger tank affect rear ground clearance at the rear or do you think it is exposed at the rear , etc ?

Did you talk to Toyota about reprogramming the fuel computer now you have the larger tank ? maybe they can help ?
                          cheers

                            Hi Guys,

                            to answer your questions.

Bassett - no the computer is still computed to an 87 litre tank and calulates accordingly. I knew this would be the case as I checked with Toyota to see if it could be reprogrammed to the larger tank. The answer was NO..! It will be interesting to see what the cruise range does when I keep driving past '0'.

Simon - I don't have any pictures, but ring Paul at Long Range and he'll send you some. It cost me $1441 (GST Incl) to get installed by them. The clearance angle it actually better than the original. If you look at my car from behind you can't see it as the towbar hides it. You can see it slightly from the side because it's no longer black but a shiny silver.

I'm yet to actually test the clearance in 4wd mode but I don't expect any problems. I'll be doing that in a couple of weeks time.

I filled the car up last Tuesday (5th Jul) and so far I've done 505 kms and have only used a quarter tank. I always record the kms and litres when I fill up so as to get an accurate idea on fuel consumption for trips and 4wding.

Now I just need to get the storage system in and some better springs for the rear end and I think I'll give it a rest after that.

                            cheers

How are things going with the long range tank? What does the computer say when you go past the "O" left of the original 87 litres?
