  • parts for a remote trip

From July we are planning a trip across the Gibb River Road + a few side trips with our GX 150 3.0 l D towing our Kimberley Kamper. We'll continue on for a big lap but Xmas at Margaret River is the plan Prado has done 40 K and has not missed a beat - What parts should we carry ? I'm not much of a mechanic but I could change a radiator hose and a fan belt . Always carried those as parts in previous vehicles (Defender and 100 series) on longetr trips. Should I do the same ?

If you have the space then take a few more items. Dosn't hurt to have filters (air, oil and fuel) plus some oil. make sure you've got the tools you need and get a workshop manual of somesorts. Even if you can't do it you might find someone who can. Should have other suitable spares as well including length or electrical wire, connection, fencing wire, super glue, putty, tape, kitchen sink, etc...

Thanks for that - I will have to draw the line somewhere as to what we can carry. We have the kitchen sink in the KK and many of the other inclusions but thanks for the other suggestions re Oil & filters and manual. With 150 L in the main tank I was hoping to be self contained but I guess if that pops and needs road repairs and top up then extra fuel will be handy.
Who does the best workshop manual?

The alternator sits fairly low on the D4D motor and can be suceptible to becoming clogged in mud due to the gap in the front wheel arches which can permit muddy gloop through. So stay away from the boggy muddy trenches, which you may encounter.

You may want to bring along a squirt bottle which you can use to try and clear up a mud covered alternator if you do experience very muddy conditions.

Murphy's Law of 4WD (part a) which says "The more spares you take the less likely you'll need them!"

          Don't forget though....

            Thanks for the help;
I hear Murphy was an optimist . I tried to buy a workshop manual today and was told by local AutoPro there is not one in publication ??? I have not bought a workshop manual since I was a new driver and that is too many years ago. Should I keep looking?

Not saying that the Max Ellery is the way to go but you can buy them.
              http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Workshop-Manu...item5d2e604ff8

Also try at a Toyota dealership and see if they still have any of the Toyota workshop manuals or can get one.

ebay is a place to look but you can also try a bookshop and get them to order one in. Oh, that's right, there arn't any bookshops anymore. They all seem to be closing their door

EDIT: Actually the above link is probably irrelevant as I just re-read that this is in the 150 thread. Just head into Toyota and buyt one from them. There should also be a Max Ellery, Gregory and possibly a few others.

If it helps as well, here is a review on the Max Ellery to suit the 120 http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...orkshop-Manual

There's been a few threads on this subject ... you might like to try a search.
On a new vehicle it's pretty unlikey a hose will burst ... a belt maybe.
An air filter's a good idea as long trips on dusty roads can clog them pretty quickly.
Fuel filter probably - you might get a bad dose of diesel.

Probably a more important item is having some means of communicating so if something really does go bad you can summon help. So this really means a satphone or HF radio. And look at the auto club top cover too.
                    Cheers, Wayne

How's your relationship with the dealer you use, I went to my dealer and got a suggested box of bits, paid for them and when I returned, he told me that anything that was in original condition he would credit to me next service, which I had when I got back, can't ask for m,uch better than that.

Have just been through the same exercise. I take all as seggested plus a few fuses, couple of wheel nuts, cable ties, spare HL globe, RP 7, radiator seal , tube of liquid weld, spare UHF aerial, block of timber to put under the jack, spare inner tube to use if you damage your last spare, brake fluid, and puncture repair kit. If you take all these you will not have a single problem !! Cheers Chas

Found the thread to workshop manuals so I might try to track down a cd.
I am a gross newbie to this forum idea --- when all else fails read the instructions -- Quiet day at work today so I read the post instructions and will search more diligently in future before posting.
                          Apologies for the duplication --
Thanks for the advice to all those with good ideas--
Fan Belt and airfilter, don't know about the fuel filter as the 150 has a filter that doesn't get changed just drained , Auto club cover is already in place but I might look at an upgrade, have Uhf radio and Epirb.
                          thanks

I did this trip in late 2010. I came across a 120 d4d with no modifications that had been driven to Kalumbaru at 5kph on Kalumbaru Road and they had no issues. Other folks had punctures, failed shock absorbers, bearing issues on trailers and so on. There is always some drama somewhere. This is REMOTE touring and the issue for me was that folks in Melbourne or Sydney have no idea where you are when they send spares.
Think about a tyre pressure monitoring system for your vehicle and trailer. Slow leaks in tyres can destroy them without your knowledge. I also came across a guy who used an infra-red thermometer for checking the temperature on his shock absorbers.
So take some spare shock absorbers, wheel bearings for your trailer and the like. It may save you from waiting for weeks in some gorgeous spot for replacements.
And, yeah Murphy's law does apply.
                              Cheers
