  • 2nd Hand 120 Grande, rear door leak :(

Gday guys, new to the forum.
I recently (2-3 weeks ago) bought a 2nd hand 2003 Prado Grande from Toyota Deer Park(Victoria.)
From about day 3 i noticed that there was a severe leak in the rear boot door, now ive contacted Toyota Deer Park about it and after a bit of negotiating had them pay to have the door fixed at Toyota in Berwick, as that was my local toyota dealer.(For those not familiar with Victoria, Berwick Toyota is just down the road me, and Deer Park is about an hour trip to the other side of the city)

Now berwick toyota had the car today, and they fixed a leak in the rear window, but have said that the upper rear brake light is still leaking. It seems to be missing a rubber seal, im not sure if they actually have one, but from what i can tell there should atleast be some sort of seal there, rather than the plastic brake light sitting straight into the duco, and not looking anywhere near being water tight.

Now I have 2 questions.. firstly..

Can someone have a look at their brake light, is there a seal around the upper light?

And secondly, do I have a leg to stand on as far as making them pay for Berwick toyota to fix it?

The way I see it, they sold me a car that is severely leaking water, which if they so much as washed the car they should have picked up on, and for me to take the car back to Deer Park will cost me a full days pay as I would have to miss work. So do I have a right to make them repair it at Deer Park, or should I try to hit them up for a tow truck(which they will probably have a heart attack at the very mention of.) Is there anyone else I can contact to go above the Deer Park used car manager? As in toyota themself?

    Thanks in advance

I had the same problem with mine just after I bought it. Whenever I took it to the car wash it would leak on the inside of the rear window. My local Toyota fixed the brake light under warranty when I took it back to them. They said they replaced it but I didn't check whether they actually replaced it, put in a new rubber or just siliconed it up. Hasn't leaked since so I don't really care.

Well this is half what im thinking, im sure if i were to take it back to deer park, they would have no problems repairing it, im just trying to avoid having to take it that far. If i can get away with doing it myself, either with silicone or getting some sort of rubber seal from a place like clark rubber or somewhere, id be much happier being out of pocket $50 than having to lose an entire days pay. The only thing im not sure of, is whether its an actual rubber seal, or some sort of double sided sealing tape or what not.

        Craig;
Thanks for the advice, this is what i've found.

It doesnt mention anything about whether or not they're obligated to pick the vehicle up or arrange travel of it etc.

Im starting to lean more toward doing a seal myself, if someone was able to take a look at theirs (possibly even get a photo) id be very appreciative Not having worked on cars all that much i'm not too sure what im in for though, but surely it cant be much more than some adhesive and some sort of seal?

Must be a common event ...when I first got my Prado I found the rear carpet wet so I took it to a panel beater who advised me that it was the rubber seal...weeks after replacing the seal to the tune of $366.15 it was still leaking. My local Toyota dealership advised me to check the " High Stop Brake Light" which I found that the seal had perished and the previous owner had also tried to fix it with silicon. The replacement brake light unit cost me a further $327.65 (part #8157060081) so after spending $693.80 my Prado is now not leaking....education is a expensive ...Oh what a feeling!!!!

Yeah, Toyota told me about $330 for the brake light unit, as you cant buy the seal alone. This is why im hoping I can get something else that will do the trick, just need some info on what the seal actually is! Having all sorts of trouble finding out though =(

The seal is similar from what I remember when removing the old one was that of 3m double sided automotive tape more of a foam type seal rather than rubber.

Check toyodiy.com to see if there is an actual seal called up.
                Guess not http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/p_G_200...PGKQ_8117.html

                  Hey guys,
Just making sure I get te right thing, is this basically what I'm after to reseal the light? But obviously in black

                  https://www.whitworths.com.au/main_i...tAbsolutePage=

Also, does the light cover just pop out? I'm having trouble getting it out, being a bit careful though since I don't want to break anything. It seems to come forward from the door a little, but not all the way out. Do I just need to force it out?

Ok so had it repaired by deer park about a week ago after plenty of back and forth arranged for it to be done on a Saturday. Driving home from work last night noticed it's still leaking!!!

So after all the stuffing around I'm back to square one and am just going to tackle to problem myself. Quick question... How does the rear door trim come apart? I can't seem to get it off.. I was told that the upper trim near the upper brake light should just pop out, is this right?

To revive an old thread... I've recently started noticing a leak in my rear door as well. a thorough scan of the read door seal revealed nothing. So I set up the hose on the roof and climbed in a side door.
There it was, coming in through the plastic trim... so through the centre brake light I presume. Besides the washer jet that's the only thing up there.

Has anyone had any success with fixing this issue? If so, how, what parts were required and how much?
Also I seem to not be able to remove the light either. I can't see any obvious screws, all that goes in there is the wiring harness and the jet hose.

                      Thanks in advance guys.
                      I'm still a dirt n00b, but I'll get there

Mine came in through the rear glass. Before touching the brake light, put some tape over the seam between the glass and the body. If the water stops, it's the glass seal.
