  • Rear main leaking

Can't believe this is leaking already... only got 61k on the clock. Toyota says it's not covered by driveline warranty (the dealer one), so I have to fork out. They quoted me about $1000 bucks originally but they came down to about $650 which is reasonable considering they will have to pull out the transmission.

Anyone else had to do this yet?

    Re: Rear main leaking

I would be asking where this is written because my rear seal on my transmission is starting to leak and I have just clicked over 40,000kms.
I have referred to my warranty/service book and it states:

Engine tune-ups, lubrication, replacement of expendable parts such as filters, coolant, spark plugs, fuses, brake pads, wiper blades are normal wear and tear parts and are not considered warranty items.

So I checked the service schedule and it states when to inspect and or replace filters, spark plugs, brake pads and wiper blades. Fuses are an expendable item due to their cost to replace and it is design to be the first item to fail in case of a fault. It doesn't state to check any oil seal to see if its leaking. Correct me if I am wrong but an expendable item is something that could be replace often. I just did a Google search and one definition is "Expendable Items means items and parts that are not normally reusable and require frequent or periodic replacement". I have a 2002 Ford Falcon and not one leak.

Then they state normal wear and tear. A definition of this is:

Wear and tear is damage that naturally and inevitably occurs as a result of normal wear or aging. It is used in a legal context for such areas as warranty contracts from manufacturers, which usually stipulate that damage due to wear and tear will not be covered.

Wear and tear is a form of depreciation which is assumed to occur even when an item is used competently and with care and proper maintenance. For example, repeated impacts may cause stress to a hammer's head. In the normal use of a hammer for its designed task, this stress is impossible to prevent, and any attempt to eliminate it would make the hammer useless. At the same time, it is expected that the normal use of a hammer will not break it beyond repair until it has gone through a certain amount of use.

A company which supports a warranty on a product with the possibility of wear and tear will usually limit the warranty to a period of time where its wear and tear will probably not be enough to impede the use of the product significantly. Other factors such as the willingness of a customer to replace a product through warranty will affect how long the company offers it."

After reading this one would assume that and oil seal should last 3 years or 100,000kms.

Toyota replaced my clutch under warranty when it failed completely. one of the seal between the gearbox and transfer was also leaking, and they came to the party and replaced it as well.

while they had the box out, i forked out just shy of $100 for them to replace the rear main.

if they replaced my leaky intermediate seal, i would assume the rear main would be the same. i thought they would at least last the life of the clutch.

I would have thought it was under warranty. Have you tried head office for an explanation?

I had mine replaced along with the pinion seal under warranty, underneath of the car was also degreased due to it being covered in oil.

some dealer warranty's are only good for limited parts.
            which this sounds like.
the policies are normally through another company managed for the dealer.
the ones i used to handle would cover only internally lubricated parts.
seals are not a internally lubed part so not covered.

It would seem I have a similar oil leak from the rear main seal. I found some oil drips around the plastic cover on the bottom of the bell housing during my post Tasie trip service last week. I degreased the area hoping for the best but when I looked again today there was a fair amount of oil around the area so it seems to be getting worse quickly.

Not sure of the cost. I had a seal changed in another rear wheel drive toyota a few years ago by a local mechanic. The labour charge was 3 hours and I supplied a genuine seal which was around $30. If you're going to remove the gear box, get the seal on the gearbox changed as well (I think it's called a torque converter seal).

Thanks mate, can anyone else think of anything I should be checking or replacing whilst the transmission is out?

Transmission mount if it's found to be broken. The rubber may separate from the metal once the weight of the gearbox is taken off it.

                      Hi,
Just had one done a few weeks ago, 120K on the clock, came to $524 at Bega Toyota, but leaked (worse) again after the drive home (50 kilometres), they picked up the car the next day and I had to fork out another $363 as they said quote" FOUND FLEX PLATE BOLTS TO BE LEAKING OIL REMOVED BOLTS ADDED SEALANT REFITTED TRANSMISSION AS REQUIRED"
why this wasn't found on the original unserviceability was explained by the amount of oil in the area when first looked at appeared to be the rear main, I wonder was the flex plate not installed correctly originally when they had everything apart.
