That's why I did it Fido, more sidewall. although as the wheels came with the Dunlop OE ones that were brand new, I left them on. Looks a bit silly with them on and a steel bar with winch and UHF aerial. But I figured why waste the money just yet...
Will either look at the Cooper At3's or BF' in an all terrain. I think??

Does more sidewall offer better protection? I'm asking because when I drop the pressure down on my 18s they do bag out a lot and the wheels do seem to cop a lot of scrapes.

      • Are they light truck or just standard? I found on my last truck, the LT's were great when dropped, the gave the rims a bit more protection.
The passenger ones were too soft at lower pressure. Just what I found

They are LTs (D697 265/60/R18 LT).

          • Stock = 265/60R18 = diameter 775mm

When you move to 17s ..
            265/65R17 = 776mm
            265/70R17 = 802mm
            275/65R17 = 789mm

Some states seem to have a limit of increasing the tyre diameter by only 15mm, so 275/65R17 might be the best option?

            • Got the 265/65R17 ... D697 .. $259 each. Cheaper than the BFG and at least the design is not 15+ yrs old.

Hi Bawky - how are these tyres going...any rubbing to date on/off road? I test fitted a set today and clearance was slight but no obvious issues. No road experience however...

Hi, sorry for the delay, we have been away
The tyres are working really well. They performed well in sticky clay, off road they haven't missed a beat. They make a slight noise and it is louder on smooth roads when they are cold. Travelling at speed any extra tyre noise is slight if noticed at all. They are a little wider than standard and larger in diameter. I would not be surprised if they reduce fuel efficiency, however I have changed a lot all around they same time. My average around town is in the 12 litres per 100 km range. They look the part and the extra diameter adds to the clearance. They seem to grip the wet roads too. This weekend we are going to Stockton Beach and I will see how they perform on the sand. Rock, clay, gravel and road they handle really well.

i got the 265/65/17 112s D697 for $225 each today. got more than 100,000 km and 8 years from the BFG's. for that price i was willing to give the Bridgies a go. First thing i noticed was the much more comfortable ride around town. got home found the pressures at 44psi. I'm sure when i drop the pressures tomorrow the ride will be even better.

That's the main reason that I didnt buy the BFGs ... if they last for 100,000kms they must be rock hard rubber. Might as well make them from plastic or metal.

                      • Have read through the 15 pages of this thread and still cant really find what i am looking for.
So can someone please tell me what size tyre you can upgrade to on a Kakadu 150 series model Prado without rubbing issues?
Can you put a 265/65/18 or 275/65/18 on without issues? Or whatever size others can tell me works best and more options of choice in tyre brand as well compared to the standard 265/60/18 tyres

                        Comment

                        • 265/70/R17 is perfect, no rubbing (have Pirelli Scorpions ATR LT in this size fitted on VX which has KDSS like Kakadu). Used FJ wheels.
Pirelli has softer rubber therefore gives excellent grip/traction both off-road and on-road.
265/65/R18 would be same size as 265/70/R17 so would work.
For 275/70/R17 / 275/65/R18 size heard different opinions. I believe it will be a close call and your choice of tyre may make it possible or not. You should do a test fit first using your choice of rubber as different tyres are slightly bigger/smaller while officially same in size/ratios. Also wheels offset will impact.

                          • Thanks Kapitan
Still a while off yet from having to get new shoes for the kakadu, biut just looking into it all now so im prepared
Have had Pirelli Scorpion ATR's on an older car i had, really liked them, sold the car though before i could see how much life i could get out of them, bought them off international tyre trader online for a really good price, then had local tyre place fit for me.
So what made you put the FJ wheels on Kapitan? so it opened up more tyre choices for you? Or just didnt like the 18" wheels on the VX? There same as kakadu 18" wheels yeh? Im not a huge fan of them myself, seen someone on here paint theres black and made them look a lot better.
Can you post a pic of your VX with the FJ wheels on? Keen to see
I actually had a 2013 FJ Cruiser before i bought this Kakadu
