    Thanks Mate,
    Who is doing this?
TJM seamed very nervous about giving me 15mm and ARB said it couldn't be done....

      Thanks Mate,
Can you advise which set up you have?

I used Cal Offroad although a few on here have not had the service that i did?? I believe Superior Engineering and snake racing also have kits for the Kakadu. If you wanted to go down the ARB and OME path then you could always just buy the larger airbags from Airbag man and then have the new BP-51 shocks. ARB wont fit a competitors products, that's why I imagine they told you it cannot be done.

        • No worries. I used bilstein shocks with dobinsons springs.

I was thinking 265/70/R17 myself, same as what comes on the FJs.

Well the tyre place doesn't want to give me the 265/70/17s now, they say it's too great a change. They are saying I need to go for a 265/65/17 instead. If the FJs come with a 265/70/17 on the OEM rims (which is what I have now) I can't see why it's not OK on a Prado.

I have, another mob were happy to do it. They said it's only 2mm outside the allowable change, won't be an issue in a few thousand Ks.

                  • Yeah I looked at that Andrew but I was still confused.

                    • Fido if your lift is 50mm or less you can go to a tyre with overall diameter of up to 50mm more. According to that site Andrew has linked.

265/60 18 is 775mm overall diameter. 265/70 17 is 809mm overall diameter. Yes this varies manufacturer to manufacturer but nominal sizes are OK for this discussion. That is an increase in diameter of 29mm or radius 14.5mm. So that is lifting 14.5mm. With a 50mm suspension lift that means a total lift of 64.5mm which is within the 75mm maximum allowed without certification.

The old rules which still apply to passenger cars and SUVs only allowed an increase of 15mm which is why a few of us ran 275/65 which was an increase of 14mm. Now I run 265/70.

                      Is that clearer?

                      • Thanks MJ, I can't recall exactly how much lift I got, will have to go back and check my build thread.

Edit: Checked my build thread and it was 65mm at the time (3 years ago now) but some of this was just getting back what I'd lost putting the bar, winch, and dual batteries in. It was expected to settle to an approx 40mm lift but I haven't checked it lately.

                          Thanks Mate,
I ended up at Jax tryes at Yeerongpilly Brisbane (For tyres) and mentioned that i wanted to upgrade suspension and they said they could do it no problem with KDSS.
Ended up with Bilstien and Kings springs with a 2" lift - its a bit firmer than the standard set up but i like it.
I dont have the Kakadu I have a VX (Non Airbag)

Thanks for all your help everyone

                          • Well great thread, I did get through the 23 pages a lot of helpful info.

We are looking to set up our 2016 kak, lift and tyres ect.
In the meantime We went out 4wding and encountered some mud/clay mixed with boulders in the high. Country
Being completely standard suspension and wheel wise it was a lot to ask avoiding smashing under the 4wd I was riding the wheels over the boulders, unfortunetly one was a little slippery and it took a fair chunk out of The rim.....

I have been 4wdung for some time, never had rim damage but only ever had 1 set of alloys and there were Walker evan beadlocks, so hard to compare all the rest had been steel rims which are not prone to damage due to how they dish in
Are the factory 18" wheel prone to damage, what are your thoughts ?

Really was keen on just using the factory wheels on a set of 275/65r18 tyres but after damaging 1 rim from 1 0uting I'm having second thoughts
I read all the posts reguardibg the FJ +15 17" alloys but people must be onto them as there is only 1 or 2 sets for sale and there asking big $$$$

What do you call big $$$$? My set cost around $1200 for 5 via a dealer on eBay including freight from NSW to Vic. He even split the OEM tyres off them for me as the original price was higher but I had no desire to run Grandcraps on my Kakadu. The rims were pretty much delivery kms only, just a couple of very small dings on one. I got them powder coated black for just $80 per rim. I know there are black rims out there for less but I have found the Toyota offering to be more solid than a lot of after-market ones and I know the FJ ones suit the Kakadu in terms of size and offset.

I changed from the original factory alloys for the same reason you have discovered, the 18s got too bashed up out on the tracks. The 17s have given me access to a greater range of tyre sizes and more sidewall height so the rims aren't quite so close to the chunky stuff.
