  • Relocate USB / Audio Jack from Centre Console or Duplicate

    Guys,

Has anyone relocated or duplicated the USB / Audio socket from the centre console to another location? I was considering placing an alternative socket somewhere else. Primary objective is to reduce or hide cabling around the centre console area to keep it less cluttered. If I'm the only one, I guess it'll be my mod to post.

Any solution yet? Inside the centre console would be nice. Spoke to Alberts Audio in Perth, they could directly connect my iphone charge cable (usb) directly beneath dash for $50. This does however not tie into the radio part.

I'm getting my car in 10 days. This will be one of my early mods. I'm thinking it will likely be a USB HUB positioned somewhere tidy, out the way but accessible.

Relocate USB / Audio Jack from Centre Console or Duplicate

Very keen to hear the outcome on this. I'd like to put another USB plug in one of the blank switches on the RHS of the steering column.

I know that this is an old post but I have recently bought a 2010 Prado GLX and one of the first things that I wanted to do was to relocate the AUX jack to within the centre console. To me it is not a great spot to have this outlet so I wanted to move it out of the way. As far as I could see on this forum there were no posts from anyone else who had done this so I thought I would add in what I did below for anyone else who wants to make the same change.

          Here is the end result

I have taken a spare plug from the dash under the steering wheel to fill the gap from the AUX plug I removed. I will now need to find the cheapest option to replace this.

And as you can see, the AUX plug is now neatly within the centre console so no more messy cords and can store iPods etc out of sight.

            The steps involved

Remove the stereo face. This can be removed by hand. I found the best way is to dig fingers underneath and slowly lift this up to get a good hold. Once this has been removed, you can then unplug the cable from the back to get this out of the way. This then allows you to get access to remove everything else in order as below.

Remove the side panels, unplugging the cable to get this out of the way.

Now that the above has been removed, you can lift out centre console slowly from the top as below.

The clips will popup as you go so just slowly ease this up. The final section near the centre console just lifts out.

Unplug the two cables so that you can lift out the centre console. This gets a bit tricky but may be easier in an auto?

This now gives you access to cut into the console to fit the plug in. I ended up actually removing this altogether (which haven't got full photos of) to do the cutting but it could just as easily be done in place. I traced the outline of the plug into the foam and cut out around this. I then drilled a hole and cut the shape out with a fine blade on a jigsaw. No doubt there are better tools to use but this did the trick. I then tidied up the hole with a stanley knife.

For charging only? Try searching ebay for "USB flush".

no for actual plug in to the head unit, i need two plugs, one for an internet dongle and one for general USB connectivity. I want to keep it original toyota if i can help it. Im aware of others for sale on ebay etc but they look cheap and/or like they belong in a caravan. If i cant find anything i may have to just bite the bullet with a couple of cheap ones and put them into the arm rest storage bin.

A genuine usb/3.5mm socket for the GXL console is about $80 plus shipping from amayama, I have the part no at home if you want it to order? Keep in mind this socket is only a "dumb" socket that is wired back to the headunit so you will need an aftermarket headunit that provides a second rear USB port/aux in to make use of it.

I was going to put a second socket in my dash as a downstream USB port for my in-dash mounted tablet (pics coming soon) but didn't do it in the end as I didn't think the socket was worth $80, let alone $400!

With my tablet install, to save having to run a cable across the console for the audio input, instead of relocating the socket I just tapped into the aux input wires behind the stereo. This allowed me to permanently connect the audio from the tablet to the stereo (switchable with the aux button on the stereo) but left the usb in the factory location so we can charge phones with this when travelling (and also still does usb input to stereo).

Dont forget, Toyota state the centre arm rest storage should not have electrical items placed in it (phones, iPods, etc), let alone installed and wired into it. Toyota might find reason for warranty voiding if you did this install.
