  • How to bleed 120 series brakes?? Sound silly I know but...

    Hey guys,

Im a new to owning a prado and would never think twice about bleeding my brakes but I bought a Max Ellery's workshop manual that says I need a brake line clamp to block fluid flow to the calipers and to crack the pipes at the Master Res and let fluid leak out for a Minute!!!!

Apparently this bleeds the Master Res first???

It sound totally wrong and against the basic pricipals of what I know.....

Tell me... surely I bleed my prados brakes in the same way I have bled all my vehicles in the past yes????

If you have done a brake fluid change on a 120then get back to me!!!!

Cheers .... time for a beer...

Interesting.....I would have just bled them as normal (clear hose from caliper to a bottle half full of water, loosen nipple, start at furthest from MC, slowly pump until clean fluid runs then tighten nipple)

Wonder if we are wrong

What is the reason for having the bottle half full of water? Never heard of that one before :?

Never heard of water either, if anything - keep water away from it - brake fluid being hydroscopic tends to absord moisture and moisture in the brake line is never good.

        At least thats my understanding?

i did mine just recently with my mechanic mate . changed fluid completely . just do it the same as normal , you will hear buzzers going off just keep the resevoir topped up . USE THE CORRECT DOT specified fluid .not some crap youve had lying around the garage . made a big difference to the pedal feel.ie less spongy .

Only if you get air in it (ie; don't let it get too low while bleeding)

Bleed lines/system as you would any other vehicle.

The bottle is easier to rinse out later is all. We even used to throw a bit of detergent in it. Otherwise the bottle gets filthy (these were actual brake bleeding bottles that have the a hanging hook / hose holder thingamijig. If your chucking the bottle then dont bother.

And water cant get up the tube into the brake system so thats not an issue.

                  Yes no worries peoples!!

As I expected, there is no difference to bleeding these brakes as there is with any other set of brakes....

...My hilux has a Load Sensing Proportioning Valve that needs bleeding after the 4 wheels have been bled...

As no one has mentioned it, I would assume the 120 Prado does not have one of these valves????

                  Cheers again

Only early 120 GX's without ABS (before ABS became standard fitment) had LPV's. All models with ABS have EBD (electronic brake force distribution).

                      Thanks mick

That certainly answers all of my bleeding qusetions...

At this point I know my bleed job has been a success.

What made me ask about all of this is that when I am stationary and press really hard down on the brake, the pedal slowly goes to the floor. Which actually is a bit concerning.

But when I am driving, I need only to press down about an inch to get good grab on the brakes. And they actually stop the car fantastically.

There has been a few posts about soft feeling pedals and chat about replacing Master cylinders....

Is this soft feeling, floor dropping pedal normal or what???????

The Prado has a soft pedal compared to most vehicles but the pedal shouldn't go to the floor :!: .... This is usually a sign of an internal leak or defective Master cylinder.

There was a recall at some stage due to a seal issue. Can't remember which years or models were covered. It was covered on here so a search would soon find it.

I will look into the recall.
