  • Mobile Phones in Cars under Threat

Tough new laws to ban all mobile phone use when driving are being considered by Australian transport ministers after a landmark report found even hands-free devices dramatically increased the risk of crashing.
The report by state transport heads reflects the growing concern about distraction to drivers involved in accidents.

Bullbars, mobile phones - what's next?

Just watched the news.... they also want to drop the blood alcohol level to 0 and install those breatho lock out gadgets (those things convicted drink drivers have installed on their vehicles, they have to blow into it before the engine will start) to all vehicles.... that's right ALL VEHICLES :!:

Seriously... who thinks of this stuff?? Worst still our tax dollars pay their wages!

I'm absolutely lost for words!!! The world is going crazy!!!

I suppose I would be far off when saying that the same numpties that came up with these have input into the bullbar issues that have surfaced? Surely these people have a tax payer funded holiday they can take? Or another tax payer funded jaunt they can embarque on? At least that's money better spent than these messed up excuses...

talking on your phone ,hands free , yeah who thought that one up im sure thats heaps more distracting than a 2 year old in the back seat . having said that i believe that ANYONE caught texting while driving should lose their license instantly . just recently a mate was travelling in a 50 zone and observed a car coming towards him wandering all over the rd he could see the driver head down texting .as it drew level with him it slammed into the back of a parked truck at about 70ks , luckily it didn't hit him. he thought he was going to be dragging a dead body out of the car. . luckily the young girl was not badly injured. the first thing she said when he dragged her from the written off vitara was "I HAVE TO FINISH THIS MESSAGE" . who cares if she killed herself but what if she hit you or i or the missus or kids . im sick of seeing people wandering across 2-3 lanes of traffic because theyre texting . yet theyll tell us that .05 is a criminal act .
03 grande v6 , with added stuff that makes it go places . RTFM people !

            Come over here to WA.
They just passed new laws now making it legal to make or take calls from a mobile while driving (no need for a bluetooth hands free) as long as the phone is in a cradle. So now you can as of March 1st, manually dial a number on your phone whilst driving.

Re: Mobile Phones in Cars under Threat

As a motorcyclist and having been cut off and/or almost hit by motorists using (talking, txting etc) a mobile phone almost on a daily basis here in Canberra (don't know if it's worse here or just concentrated to a small area and more easily noticed), I get quite irrate when I see someone using there phone in the car. What is sooo important that it can't wait till you get where you are going or you can't pull over for 2 whole mins to send your text or make your call? I have a cradle for my iPhone that is visible within the scope of my guages (checking speed, fuel etc), if someone calls whilst i am driving I can see who it is and pull over OR there is this wonderful thing called VOICE MAIL. If it's important then the person calling will leave a message and I can get back to them with I am ready.

Also baffles me when said motorists that almost take me off the road (now let me add that I ride a Harely, a large bike, with after market pipes which are loud enough to be heard when I am in your blind spot - so little excuse to be cutting me off anyway) shrug and look at me as though it's not their fault and did nothing wrong!

I'm sorry, but this is a pet hate of mine! If you are in an accident whilst using the phone .... STIFF SH*T! I hope that someone sees it and makes it known as your records can be checked to see if the phone was in use at the time of the accident ... and i'd assume this would void any insurance claim.

Re: Mobile Phones in Cars under Threat

Interesting discussion so far I must say.
Yes I understand that talking on a phone while driving reduces concentration on driving.
Yes anyone who texts while driving is an absolute idiot !

But tell me, how do we stop those who when driving with a passenger continually turn to face the passenger as they converse ?
I see that occuring regularly and they are not paying attention to driving, probably paying less attention than someone talking on hands free as hopefully the hands free driver is at least looking at the road.
And lets not forget those having breakfast or doing their hair, tie etc, or changing a CD or using their IPod/IPhone/IPad/Idiot on the morning commute .....

Yes I'm on handsfree while driving, yes I make a lot of phone calls for work which also involves a lot of driving for work.
Would I prefer to be able to leave those calls till I was back in the office (or pull over to the side of a multilane highway, park with the engine off as required by QLD law if I hold the phone in 30 odd degree heat) ..Yes I would however a lot of these are not 1-2 min calls so not practical as unfortunately modern society by and large does not want to wait for a reply or answer, (snail mail instead of email ..what and wait a couple of days for an answer, yeah right  )
I just hope the issue is approached with some common sense which unfortunately seems to be less and less common these days.

Just my humble unrushed thoughts gotta go, phone's ringing

Re: Mobile Phones in Cars under Threat

I agree with some comments, but not all. IMO, using a "hands free" mobile phone is no more of a distraction than the following ....

                  a. Children in the back seat.
                  b. Talking to your passengers.
                  c. Various changing speed limits, numorous signs and multiple traffic lights are direction arrows.
                  d. Changing the station or CD on your radio.
                  e. Using the mic on you CB.

I do agree that not using a "hand free" phone or "texting" is a very real distraction and could cause a fatal accident. I feel that an instant 3 months loss of licence if caught would quickly resolve the problem ... but there's the real issue ... we dont have enough police on the road to catch them! It's easier to make a "blanket" law that effects everyone. Thats how governments think!?

Re: Mobile Phones in Cars under Threat

Years ago whilst out on the road during working hours we carried pagers and/or employed secretaries to take messages and that system worked ,we would return the call to who ever needed to be contacted at a convinient time . Now days the phone does this for you , and it does not have to be until you get to the office or a phone box , you can pull over and answer the call if it is important or you can call them back when ever you want because the phone box or office is in your pocket . But unfortunatly people have this arragonce about them thinking they are more important than the people around them and think that they must answer the phone at any time or any situation and alot of the times it is whilst driving , is it that important as to put your life or others in danger ??? but no matter how often this dabate is preached the arragonce in people still surface with the shrug of the shoulders "so what" , and also coming up with an arguement that you dont have time to chat on the side of the road for 20 plus minutes, what a load of bs there is a thing called day planning and if your day is being on the road driving and your at need by people calling you,do a tally on how long your on the phone ( with incoming calls and out going ) work out the daily average and allow that time for not driving in your daily plan , it is not rocket sience and you can chat on the phone on the side of the road knowing you have compinsated for that call in your daily plan .

The people making the call do (most of the times) understand that before making the phone call yto a mobile phonethere is a possability the person they are calling may have loss of signal phone may be turned off or no charge in the battery and if important leave a message and are willing to wait for a return call .

Ok I do agree there are other destractions as mentioned that do effect us whilst driving but the phone is one destracrion we have full power of so why dont we make it one less destraction , and stop bringing in the debate about other destractions to make the use of the phone whilst driving sound ok agian what a load of bs.

Next it will be ban GPSs. What about those notification things in taxis and trucks will they ban them as well since shorley they are just as distracting.

How will this be policed since banning the use of a non handsfree mobile seems to be a failure. I see so many people driving around hands free and nothing seems to be done about it.

A few years ago, I was driving behind a vehicle on the expressway from Bulli to Sydney, 110 kph zone, and a car in front was altering it's speed, from the speed limit to below that and back again, and a bit erratic in the lane.

Could only see a male driver in the vehicle, and as I drove beside the vehicle, a girl's head popped up from the driver's lap. She was giving him a head job while he was driving at 110kph. (nothing wrong with that, but he should have stopped in the emergency lane  )

Suppose the next thing will be no sex whilst driving!
