Hey MDST and Torrie/Ben,
I think it's about time we see how much difference those 80 series shocks/coils really make!
How about some articulation measurements so we can compare to other setups? Simply get that rear fully articulated (until one wheel is barely touching the ground), measure each side from rim to flare, and using both figures calculate the total travel. This assumes you have 16" rims.
Well I had a go at maxing out the flex on the 90. I couldn't max out the front without any load in the prado especially being HD springs but I've got some specs on the flex I could manage.
Resting ride height unladen ( not including body lift )
Front: 770mm
Rear: 820mm
Flex with swaybars
Front: 140mm
Rear: 465mm
Would love to get some more flex in the front end, something to work on I guess!
Anyway here's some pics with the 33's
Wow, that's very interesting... whilst the 80 series shocks/coils have definitely lifted your rig higher (compared to my OME mediums), they both articulate to the exact same amount; 18.3".
I think your front flex at 5.5" is fine - mine is 4.5" to 6.5" even with the UCA's (sway bar connected). It just depends on how much downward pressure you can get in order to compress the coils and twist the sway bar. Hands down, the easiest way to improve articulation is to remove the front swaybar (expect over 7"). Once you've removed the sway bar, the next limits will be the stock control arms and CV's.
BTW - I rarely drive without the front sway bar, as it increases the risk of CV breakage.
Cheers Glen, very interesting. I have lengthened the front swaybar links but maybe some quick disconnects will go on the to do list. I'm keen to get some longer links for the rear too but overall I'm pretty happy with how it travels now.
Cheers, Ben.
Well, I sold the VZJ95 due to a variety of problems, and bought a 2008 RZJ90.
Bought it completely stock with 52000km on the clock. The interior is absolutely perfect, paint has a couple of scratches, but it has never had a dent, the truck has never even been involved in a fender bender. I've known the PO my whole life, and this 90 never saw dirt.
You can't help but notice the difference downgrading from the V6, but once you get used to driving the 4 cylinder you do realize it has more than enough to hold its own, plus the transfer case gearing is amazing, this truck shines when you need to use the low gear.
I already installed a set of 265/75R16 AT tires, OME 50mm Medium lift. I had left overs from the Prado: Hilift and recovery gear, CB radio and antenna, canvas seat covers, roof racks for aluminum boat and a couple of other minor goodies.
Here's a crappy pic with the lift and the tires:
All in all absolutely happy. That's how she'll be staying for a while until I recover from the financial hit I took with the lift and tires. Soon i'll hopefully add a bar and a snorkel and a couple of interior mods.
