  • Dyneema rope alternative to steel cable ?

    Just bought a 30 meter length of dyneema rope to replace the 28 meter steel winch cable. it's coming in the mail, does anyone know the differences in the weights of the rope verses
    The steel cable ?

    Just putting the Prado on a diet and this looked like a easy way to
    Start !

    Hey Max, at the risk of putting my head above the parapet, maybe it's not only the Prado that could benefit from a diet :lol:
    Or is that calling the kettle black :?

      The 8mm 30 meter dynamica rope weighs 1.16kgs
      The 10mm 30 meter dynamica rope weighs 1.57kgs

      Hope this helps not sure of the weight of the wire cable

        When I changed mine there was a 13kg weight saving from steel rope and rollers to synthetic rope an alloy hawse.

            You should as the rope can/could get caught under the end of a roller and be damaged. (mind you I haven't seen it happen yet and know a couple of guys running a rope/roller combination.

            Alloy hawses start at about $70

            Saves a few more kilos too.

              I'm seeing more people running roller failrleads with rope now. The thinking is the rollers don't get as hot as the face of the hawse when the rope is retrieved under tension.

                  What the Oven calling the kettle black :lol: :lol: :lol: Now we know what you got up to for Christmas Dobbo :lol: :lol: I usually tell people I got trapped in a KFC and had to eat my way out :lol: :lol:

                  There are also reversible hardened plastic HDPE Hawses available from www.dynamicarope.com not sure of the cost but are only 600 grams or so

                      If I hadn't modified my bar for the hawse I'd probably go a roller fairlead. Even the nylon hawse will heat up when the rope runs on the flat face under tension.

                        Yeah, too much xmas pudding.

                            For those interested, I removed the steel 28 meter cable this arvo and it weighs 12.2kg with the hook. Abit more than the rope !
