  • Spares to take Radiator Hose etc

    Hi
I am planning for a nine thousand K plus outback trip and would be interested in receiving any information regarding spares I should take for my 07 120 petrol with 70000 on the clock.
Are there any particular parts that perhaps others have found from past experience that I should consider taking. Any problems with say radiator hoses and if so what one ? Of course I am taking spare fused, fuel filter, belt plugs, globes, two complete spare wheels etc
    Thanks in anticipation.
    Chas

try and get your hands on spare front and rear shocks, one of each, two if you have the room and 2nd hand will do. Fluids minimum engine oil and ATF, air filter, cable ties, duct tape, liquid steel/putty, windscreen repair kit.........
Make sure if your extra spare rim is steel and your car is fitted with alloys that you have the appropiate wheel nuts (tapered for steel, stepped for alloy)

All covered. Extra spare is a new alloy and I have one front and one back shocks from when I changed all the suspension to OME
      Many thanks anyhow

Re: Spares to take Radiator Hose etc

A selection of nuts, bolts, screws and tech screws doesnt go astray for running repairs when things vibrate loose or break on the corrugations. Of course a good toolkit is a must, if travelling alone a second jack is good insurance. Rope (know of a guy who tied his bullbar on for over 1000ks in the outback). Tyre repair kit, plugs, patches, spare valves in case you loose one, if you travel with a laptop a workshop manual on CD would be handy.

Really though 2 things should cover most problems.

        1. if it moves and it shouldn't, use Duct tape.
        2. if it doesn't move and it should, use WD40.

        Cheers Andrew

Cable ties are very handy too.

Make sure you can also compress the spring with a spring compressor. I've seen other ways of doing this in the middle of the Simpson without a spring compressor but is not recommended.

Re: Spares to take Radiator Hose etc

You don't say what areas you are travelling into.
Sounds like it might be more remote areas.
Suggest you take out your motoring club's highest level of cover ( Total Care I think it is called with RACQ )
Then you need some means of contacting someone, so I guess you have satphone or an HF radio.

As for normal spares, I always have tie wire, gaffa tape, silicone sealant, some pre-drilled hoop iron, nuts and bolts, screws of various sizes, various patch kits for sealing holes in metal and plastic tanks, bits of electrical wire and connectors, that super strong "rescue tape" you can supposedly wrap around radiator hoses etc.). This all sounds like a lot but all the above parts fit in a bag in the side rear locker of the 120.
As for tools as well as the normal things consider a battery drill plus a few drill bits, light hacksaw, multimeter.
A tyre plug kit is also very useful, in addition to your second spare.. Most small holes can be quickly fixed with a plug or two, till you get to a tyre shop.I have a Super Seal kit from ARB which has been used many times.
I've used most all the above things on a bush trip at one stage or another- never used a radiator hose or belt.
              Cheers, Wayne

As above , plus a fuel filter. Get tire pressures right and drive slowly and you probably wont need any of it. Neil

Yeah the double post was my finger trouble nothing to do with the site.

Oh, another thing, if going into spinifex country there's the issue of underbody fire in the petrol 120s due to spinifex on the cat converter - some are taking a 5l garden sprayer filled with water ( in addition to a BCF extinguisher)
Could be an issue with room but could also double as your emergency water supply, I guess.
Or you coulld just stop more frequently and check underneath.
                      Cheers, Wayne

                        Thanks Guys
Your response has been most helpful.
I have most of the items already but a couple mentioned are certainly worth adding.
(Perhaps a check list would be a good idea for others to use who are considering an extended off road trip)
The interesting thing is that no one mentioned any one particular component that is a problem with the Prado.
I would expect that this would not be the case with some of the recipients of those so called "4x4 of the year" awards!!
                        Thanks again
                        Chas

Re: Spares to take Radiator Hose etc

                          I agree
Some sort of a check list somewhere on this forum would be good. I've had two long long trips and never had a problem but we should not be complacent - that will be our downfall.
