Rather than start a new thread, I thought I would just add to this one.

I have had a Rhino Rack Pioneer Tray (JA0092) with Pioneer Platform Attachment Bar (43119B) fitted to my 2008 Prado Grande specifically to mount an Adventure Kings Rooftop Tent. With the tent set to open to the side, the mounting rail blocked by a plank. When opening to the rear, the planks themselves are too wide for the mounting hardware. The mounting channels on the base of the tent are a fixed separation but I can move the mounting bolts forwards and back within the channels.

The instructions are a bit vague, or it might be just me. After speaking to the vendor, I am confident I have the tent set up correctly. I have seen various threads with RTTs on Rhino Platforms as well as this one but the pictures are either no longer there or don't have the detail I need. Or it could be that different tents have different mounting mechanisms.

Any advice or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

not sure if its any help or if its even the same mounting system but I had to reposition 2 of the 4 mounting holes for my ARB tent, It didn't work opening via rear so I got one mounting channel over the cross bar and then measured and re-drilled the holes to suit the other channel over the other crossbar. I also needed longer bolts. maybe take some photos if you can

Thanks for that, DJD120GXL. I did see your thread and pictures earlier and just couldn't quite get my head around it at the time. Looking back at it, everything is becoming clearer. TJM Canberra have just suggested doing exactly the same thing as drilling into the platform in any way would weaken it substantially. The tent is essentially a variation on the Darche tent. I will look at redrilling the mounting holes for one rail about 3 inches across (hopefully without putting holes in the matress). I have attached a photo of the base of the tent but still working out how to display it.

I will post details (and photos) of how I go later in the week.

Yes it looks like the same fix will work, you should be able to lift up the mattress and drill through, Its difficult to get it exactly right as you need to have the tent open, the mattress up and be in there with a drill and measuring tape so have a helper. but just get the distance of the cross bars right and you should be ok. I used the rear 2 and it all worked fine ACT-Fraser and back. just make sure you put the rails on the tent in the channels between the long wider panels on the rack then you get the ability to mount to the crossbars, Its tricky and to be honest mine is perfect on the front and 90% on the back but once its on its not going anywhere.
If you don't have ratchet spanners for tightening up the bolts under the platform when its on the car get some as its near impossible and you get some serious sore arms reaching in...
          cheers,

            Option 1.
Drill through the cross beam on the Pioneer platform and fix long bolts with the threaded end pointing up. Then with the help of a few people, carefully lower the RTT on top of the bolts and press down, hoping that an indent can be created on the wooden base. Then drill the indent.

            Option 2.
Place the RTT upside down on the ground with the rails already removed. Remove the Pioneer platform and place it upside down also onto the RTT. Then drill through the crossbeam and the wooden base together.

            Option 3.
This option removes the need for the RTT rails altogether. It requires the removal of the mattress to get the RTT on/off the platform. The aim is to use the channels of the Pioneer platform, channel nuts, and bolts. The bolts will be installed from inside the RTT. Installing it this way is a bit difficult as you need to line up the holes in the wooden base with the channel nuts in the channel. But with a bit of patience, it can be done.

Thanks for the advice guys. I also got a separate response from Corweater on the 4WD Action forum. This particular tent may not have an actual timber base but rather an aluminium/styrofoam sandwich with a couple of reinforcing beams. I plan on doing a much closer inspection and potentially drilling a small inspection hole.

I like the idea of removing the platform to be able to match everything up - has to be easier to manouevre the lightweight platform at ground level than the RTT up high.

I have the same rack and same tent, and had same issues mounting it. DO NOT attempt to re drill the holes for the base of the tent, there are specific I beams in the floor that have been pre drilled and if you re-drill, you are bolting pretty much styrofoam. Found out the hard way.

My solution, which has worked great.

Leave the beams underneath the tent floor where they are, crosswise on the rack (ie run them left right)(like in your pic)

Drill the pioneer rack with 8mm holes where you want the bolts to go. (I chose in the middle of the channell)

Use large flat washers (50mm)underneath the pioneer rack, as otherwise the bolts will pull through or bend the ally.

              Thats all!

That rack is so damn strong, you can jump on it, I have put mine through hell with the rooftop on top, loaded it up to god knows what, and never had an issue.

How about one of these unistrut saddle brackets?

                Source: http://www.ezystrut.com.au/products/.../e4047/e4047h/

So the Pioneer platform channel is running the same way as the arrows on the 137 dimension.
The rails of the RTT will sit on top of the saddle.

You would screw the saddle to the RTT first at the right spacing apart to suit the channels in the Pioneer Platform.
Then lower it onto the rack and hopefully, space permitting, you can tighten up the bolts on the 2 legs of the saddle bracket.

The one above is a half height version. Here is a full height version:

I have checked it out and the construction is as described (ie styrofoam centre). Now that I know what I can't do, I should be able to take some of these ideas and get something that will work. Should make for an interesting weekend. Those brackets could be the go. Thanks for all the advice so far.

yes! I'll be removing the platform next time I have to fit the tent. only problem is the weight getting it and the platform back on.. need to rig up a beam and pulley in the garage methinks..

The RTT is now fitted and good to go. In the end, I placed the RTT upside down on the ground, removed the rack from the Prado and placed it on top of the RTT. With the Rhino Attachment Bars appropriately positioned to mount the tent at the rear of the rack, I positioned the rack such that one RTT mounting channel was over a gap in the slats and the other mounting channel was directly over the centre of one of the slats.

Using the supplied bracket as a template, I drilled 10mm holes through the slat (single thickness at that point) and passed the bolts from the mounting channel, through the slat and through the bracket (one either side of the attachment bar) and tightened everything up. There is no visible deformation of any of the parts.

The fun bit was to then get the rack and RTT back on top of the Prado. With three of us, we were able to flip everything over and manouevre it into place. The tent is slightly offset to the left and is setup to open out to the left. All seems to work well - so far so good.

Finished off my shelf in the back, installed the fridge slide, had the service done. Getting closer to the Fraser trip for the true test.

I will add some photos soon.

To anyone wanting to fit a Kings RTT to a Rhino Pioneer rack..... I purchased 4x75mm M8 SS Hex bolts from Bunnings and 4xM8 SS Lug Nuts from Kaon. I drilled the 50mm washers with a carbide 8mm drill bit. I then fitted two Rhino Rack 43119B Pioneer Accessory Bars (HD C-Channel) (1220mm / 4ft) at 82mm spacing (opening towards the driver side in a Prado 120). I drilled out the aluminium rails provided with an 8mm bit and widened the tent floor holes. I assembled the whole thing while still sitting on my roof racks. Easy. No drilling through the platform.
