Just a pity that the V6 has the radiator cooler on the opposite side to the D4D, otherwise it would make for a neat install if I got one off a wreck.

    As for the V6 thing.

    Nuff said

So to do a fluid change yourself, it's not required to use a piece of wire across no 4 & 13 terminals as stated in workshop manuals to put the Auto into service mode??

        Cheers

I measured exactly the amount I removed and put exactly the same amount back in, so should be spot on.

            Cheers Andrew

I've been asked to go on a wombat run Saturday, otherwise we could have sorted it then.
Cobaw the week after, so maybe the weekend after Cobaw, will talk to you there about it

I also used a tom thumb oil pump for the refill process.

The service guy at Toyota assured me I didn't need to do the change when I asked about oil, but he sold me some none the less. I showed him a sample of what came out after the job was done and he was a bit shocked, it looked more like used engine oil than Transmission oil!

The transmission has significantly improved after the change, sharper and smoother I reckon.

I don't think I will wait 80 thou until it gets its next change.

They are a lot smother after an oil change usually. On road 50k offroad 20k or once a year is a good schedule.

I've been checking it every 10 000km for colour. I was planning to flush it every 40 000km initially. I think I'll run it a another 20 000km and assess the situation.
As I've said before, a trans coolers the best thing you can do for your transmission. Heat is the killer!

You don't have to buy Toyota ws.
There is a Penrite one in 20ltr.

Had mine done at 90k and was told that they use a flushing machine to do basically what you have done above, except they can run it continuously I suppose. Anyway, asked for a sample and it looked pretty much like coke. I'm told they check the oil condition at each service, but the state of mine would suggest otherwise. Not sure about the WS oil either as I was told that the earlier 150's (including mine) did not have it from new, in any case I am yet to be convinced that any oil will last a lifetime, even if the oil was able to remain stable, it's secondary job is to remove contaminants and suspend them until picked up by the filter, but the filter will only pull bits out down to a certain size, anything smaller stays in suspension and builds up in the various nooks and crannies of your tranny.

Toyota drained and re-supplied my 150 petrol (4 years old) for $200-. Said the filter appeared o.k. so that was not changed, but to change that was more money again.

Tow a van at times, and the auto fluid was slightly darker, but not too bad. Standard response from service dept. is that the fluid will last for the life of the vehicle and won't need changing. Do not agree with that, and told them so.

Can anyone point me in the right direction in relation to the oil for the 4 speed auto in a 2003 Grande V6?

I have had a look at the Penrite site (based on ####'s information above) and it comes up with two different types (a Full Synthetic and a Semi Synthetic) - info in picture.

Also, it has a note (259) which states the following: Models from August 2003 (refill plug marked 'WS'), use ATF FS MULTI VEHICLE FULL SYNTHETIC AUTO TRANS FLUID.

Still not sure if the 4spd uses the full or semi synthetic and really don't want to make a costly mistake.

                            Thanks in advance guys

So all done - ended up using a Nulon full synthetic (Product code ATF4).

Being a 4 speed (which has a dipstick) and a V6 (has a transmission cooler) I just disconnected the top cooler line that goes through the radiator support on the passenger side, extended the line to the floor using clear hose as previously mentioned so I could monitor the colour of the fluid and switched the car on to pump fluid into a canister to measure what was drained.

I then topped up through the dipstick tube, 2 litres at a time out/in.

After 12 litres the fluid had changed colour considerably - went from looking like used motor oil to slightly discoloured when compared to the fresh stuff.

Have done about 1500 kays since and the shift isn't noticeably different but the car seems to need less accelerator to hold speed at the upper end (80-110 kph) and the transition from Drive to Neutral and Reverse seems to have sharpened up (there isn't the lag in the gearbox picking up the reverse gear that there was previously).

All in all, pretty painless exercise and well worth the money spent in my view - I will definitely do again every couple of years maximum.

                              Thanks for the advice guys.

Do you have to switch the car off to top up? And did you run through the gears or leave it in P?
