  • Quick trip into Northern Rivers

Took a loop down into the NSW Northern Rivers over the last two days, sort of channeling the spirit of the SE QLD GTG trip down.

Unfortunately Cambridge Forest Drive and Toonumbar Forest Drive were closed due to the wet, so the dirt part of the trip started at Mallanganee. Took Cherry Tree Rd across to Mt Pikapene National Park, nothing special apart from a big goanna (which I seem to be able to spot whenever I'm offroad).

    Cherry Tree Rd

    Goanna

The picnic area at Pikapene needs a little work...

Visited the day use area at Yates Crossing where the troops spent the night on the way down. The Clarence is in flood and I reckon went over a little while after we left.

    Yates Crossing in flood:

Took the old Grafton Rd heading towards Glen Innes and visted the "Convict" tunnel at Dalmorten. In reality it was blasted by road contractors using black powder early last century apparently.

Lots of access to the rivers for camping, only a very few of the choicest spots were taken by campers.

On the way up the range to Glen Innes, we came across the Narrow Pass Fire Trail. Whilst only 4 kilometres to the lookout, it was mostly straight up, with a big berm to ramp over every 50 metres or so. The view from the top was spectacular. Whilst the Hema map we were using showed a through route, it was beginning to rain and being solo, discretion took precedence and we re-traced our steps. Turns out it was a wise move in any case as a chat to a ranger later in the day revealed we would have hit a locked gate at the other end and had to turn around anyway.

For some reason the very last 20 metres to the carpark at Tommy's Rock Lookout were barred to easy access

A quick video of the last section of the run up the hill

Allin all a fun couple of days, with a few tracks off to the side worthy of future investigation, especially around Mt Pikapene.

        Fozzy

Quite the adventure, we did a trip by ourselves years ago in our GQ Patrol in the same sort of conditions and area and it is quite daunting heading down unknown roads alone. How far did the water go over the flood plains at Yates Crossing?

Re: Quick trip into Northern Rivers

          Leon,

In the true spirit of film-making I did two takes for the video shot, it was so steep that there was no way Prue was going to hoof it up ahead of me.

          Richo,

The water was lapping the concrete roadway that led across the floodplain before turning onto the bridge. I was talking with a local who was there watching it, he said it had been over the bridge the week before and looked like it would do it again. It was certainly close enough to doing so when we were there.

As far as venturing alone, I'm the consumate chicken, there were lots of little side tracks I'd have loved a crack at, but only with another vehicle for backup (Maybe later in the year?). Prue would never forgive me if we spent the night in the forest digging ourselves out for example. I can always tell when she stops enjoying the ride, she goes all quiet. Still, a suspension upgrade and a winch are now definitely higher up the wishlist.

          Cheers,

          Dave

Re: Quick trip into Northern Rivers

              Looked like an enjoyable trip.
I was down that way and spent new years at Girraween with water flowing in some of the creeks that they say can be dry at times. This one was Bald Rock Creek.

Coming home I thought I would call in to the Tooloom Falls and have a look to see how much water was flowing over them.

Surprised to see people actually swimming in the flood water at the top of the falls.

Looks like it was an exciting trip and those conditions add the spice to keep the adrenalin flowing .

Also, I loved the movie of the Clarence lapping at Yates crossing. Excellent stuff.

Which reminds me... I was meant to get back to you about Cherry Tree Rd. Sorry about that Fozzy. So how was the lantana around Cherry Tree Road?

Great pics. I really love that area.

Great pics of Girraween & Tooloom, I've never seen flowing water at Girraween and Toolum's never been that full on when I've been there, thanks for the pics!

                    Matt,

Lantana wasn't a problem - I guess I trusted that you guys had cleaned it all up when you went through in September. When we popped out at the Southern end, there was a sign for anyone going North saying the road was closed by Forestry, so I wonder if they had had a bit of a cleanup in the interim. Didn't see any sign at the Northen end.

Is there another road in the region that could be interesting - Pawpaw Skids? Was that near Peacock Creek?

                    Cheers,

                    Dave

When I first did this region, I took the Paw Paw Skids turn-off, and it turned into a 4-5hr adventure. We eventually, somehow, found ourselves emerging at Benalbo. It was the kind of drive, where the GPS showed me the trail, but the trail was not always visible. At one point, I had to zoom in to max, so I could judge where the track was supposed to be. Sure enough, it was hidden by some overgrowth which took only moments to clear. Other parts of the track had trees fallen, which took about 45 minutes for 3 of us to clear.

I noticed there was some construction going on at Paw Paw Skids, and I think the track was closed due to the construction. Hopefully, the forestry is improving the track... it certainly made for a nice drive.

Jeez Fozzy,...those pics and vids looks awesome.
I remember those same routes LFaR and I covered back over the June long weekend last year when we mapped out part of the trip south for the SEQ road trip to the GTG. Those falls is where we we spent a night, and it's interesting to see how much water is flowing there now cause back then it was just a trickle.

It's amazing to see how the recent heavy rains has had an effect on the creeks and rivers down there.

                        Thanks for sharing
