  • Broken Side Mirror? Anyone know a wrecker with a 150?

Bugger! Reversing out of my carport the other day I lightly clipped the passenger side mirror on the post and it pushed forwards slightly. Figuring they are made to flex forwards and backwards, I pushed it back to the original position and everything worked fine again (apart from the scratch). Auto fold in and out were both working perfectly.

Now, a few days later, whenever I fold the mirrors in for parking, the passenger side one over rotates when I press the button to fold them out again. It goes right around to almost touch the front quarter panel. The motor still obviously works as it will fold back in again fine if I press the button again but whatever stops it from over rotating on the way out seems to be broken.

Any ideas how to take the mirror cover off so I can have a look at what's happening inside? I'm worrying that it'll be a broken plastic retainer of some sort but will require a whole new mirror housing which I doubt will be cheap.

Update: Even If I move the mirror back manually to the correct 'open' position, every time I start the car, the bloody thing folds right open (facing forwards) again.

Any suggestions before I take it to Toyota?

    Cheers, Sam.

Well Toyota confirmed I need a new wing mirror. Looking at $450 for the part plus fitting  . Can't believe such a small knock could ruin it.

Anyone know of a Toyota wrecker that might have a 150?

Tempted to just cut the wire for the mirror motor on that side and leave it. I presume there's a separate wire for the glass motor and the fold in/out motor.

        Cheers, Sam.

Hey Sam, try a business called All Crash Parts. They bring in replacement parts for most makes of cars, it may not be a genuine but you would be hard pressed to to tell the difference. I found out about them from my local smash repairer as they use them to get parts when insurance companies will not pay for a Genuine Replacement. Very well priced. They might be able to help you. You can get them here, http://www.allcrashparts.com.au/

Also instead of cutting the wire you might be able to pull the fuse, it would disable both but at least you do not have to repair a cut wire if / when you get the replacement.

          Cheers Daniel

Thanks Daniel. I will check them out.

Fuse was my first thought too but it's connected to the ACC fuse which also controls the parking sensors and a whole lot of other stuff that needs to stay on.

            Cheers, Sam.

Re: Broken Side Mirror? Anyone know a wrecker with a 150?

Yes that is cheap ! I have broken the mount twice on the passenger side mirror, for a GX the black mirrors were $330 each , i got quoted $650 on the first one then they realized it was the chrome one for the GXL. The reason they are so expensive is the "Oh what a feeling Toyota" experience of buying the whole unit even know its only the mount and the rest of the mirror is perfectly fine

Its only 3 bolts and a plug so just buy it from Toyota and fit it yourself.

                  Hi All,

There is a place in campbellfield in Vic called Campbellfield Hilux Wreckers, they have a brand new 150 they are wrecking. I bought my extra spare of them to go on my kaymar dual rear carrier. They are really friendly and ship out the same day.
2010 GXL Prado, ARB bar and winch, driving lights, dual wheel rack, roof rack, UHF, sat phone, rear seats removed, custom rear floor and fridge slide, chip, 3inch exhaust, 3inch lift, 200kg rear springs, ome shocks, 285 maxxis Tyres, Dual batteries, Anderson plugs, power in back etc. snorkel, and more. Wish List - nomad transmission lockup, roof mount DVD, long range tank, endless air compressor to fit the 150.

Do I understand you correctly, your mirrors fold in automarically. I have a 2010 GXL but my mirrors do fold automatically. Is it model related or something that needs to be activated.

                    Regards

They should fold in automatically without having to activate anything. There is a small square button on the right hand side of the steering column (above the mirror adjustment switch). If you push it in, both mirrors should fold in. Press it again and they should fold back out.

                      Cheers, Sam.

Hi, mine does work like that with button. Any idea if it's possible the mirrors auto fold with start and shutdown of ignition instead of having to push the button everytime? Regards

                          Nope, don't think so.

My Pajero used to have mirrors that would unfold at 30km/h if you'd forgotten to do it before driving off. Don't think the Prado does this either though as a few times I've forgotten to unfold them and only noticed once I was on the highway.

Ended up getting a new one from Toyota. I opted for the non electric version (around $600 from memory) as apposed to the electric version which was $1000+.

Needless to say, I pay particular attention now in tight spaces...
