I need an ignition switched power source on the drivers side of the engine bay in the 2.8L TD GXL Prado. I have read this entire thread and checked the green wire running to the wiper motor with no luck. The green wire is constant 12V. I don't really want to damage any more wires and I don't want to use the fuse box as has been suggested. It would seem there are differences in the wiring between the 3.0L TD 150 and the new one which seems a bit odd to me. Any help or pointing me in the right direction appreciated. [ I searched the forum and found one similar question but no answer ].

Hi Maxjj,
The following seems to be the easiest pick up of IGN switched 12V at rear of car.
There is a White socket in the Jack compartment that will have the trailer wiring plugged into it.
In the picture below the trailer harness is on the right and the car side wiring is on the left.
There is a thin grey wire up one end opposite the yellow wire and next to the light green wire.
This grey wire is protected by the 7.5A IG1 fuse and is only at 12V when the ignition is on. (I didn't check if it is also on at accessories switch position.) It appears to be unused on my car as there is no wire to it in the mating socket to the trailer loom.
There are a heap of other circuits fed from this fuse so it would be advisable to only use it as a sense circuit and not draw power from it. I intend to tap into it and use a 1Amp fuse to protect upstream circuits.
There is also another grey wire on this socket. Thicker and having permanent 12Volts located in the centre of the socket. Likewise the heavy green wire is also permanent 12V. These wires are protected by 30 Amp fuses "Towing BRK" and "Towing". Not convinced that these wires are capable of anywhere near 30Amp though look way too thin.
Cheers

did you end up using this tiny grey wire in the trailer harness plug ? How did you tap into it ?
Thanks

Sorry for delay, been travelling.
I did tap into it but have not used it yet. I used the "repair wires' to fit the plug as provided by Mr T for a price.
For part numbers see my post #82 http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...l=1#post446246

After reading this thread, I was keen to use the fuel heater plug in my 2008 120 series d4d diesel for an ignition supply. I found the 2-pin plug taped up as described, and then bought a relay from jaycar. I went to install it in the relay position marked "A/F heater" only to find that the relay socket contains no pins! Am I looking at the right relay position? Does anyone else with a 120 deisel have these pins missing also?

With dash cams they usually like a power source that is disabled when the ignition is off so the camera is not running all the time. They usually have an internal battery that powers it in its off state if you enable the G sensor function.
If you want to power it all the time then use the map light power in the map light roof assembly that has the sunglasses holder. The whole assembly just clips in.
Ignition power is also available there, it's for the sun roof. Use a meter or test lamp to find it.
Remember though, most cams are 5 volt via their USB cable. The cigarette plug that comes with the cam is a 12v to 5v converter. What I did was to remove the small printed circuit board that's in the cigarette plug and fitted it to one of the vacant rear compartments in the map light assembly in my GXL. You can easily poke the cable out the front of the headliner at the windscreen to plug it into the dash cam and cable tie the excess in the roof.
Cheers
Geoff
