  • 180 Series Prado

A bit of speculation here... Any rumours or thoughts as to where Toyota will be going with the next model? What would you like to see changed?

As has been mentioned, there appears to be a diesel upgrade headed for Europe in 2011 on the 150 to keep up pace with rival 4WD's. I've noticed that the prestige European 4WD manufacturers are starting to unveil hybrid power-trains in their SUV's and it seems a natural progression that others will follow within a few years. Perhaps the future 180 series might run a similar V6 TD hybrid as was seen on the U.S.A only release Highlander a few years ago.

I think I would like to see a V8 version, wether it is petrol or diesel doesn't matter, they also need to keep the live rear axel, ladder frame chassis and drop all models down to 5 seats, so as to keep the soccer mums out of them and get them back into vans.

As mentioned a petrol V8 and diesel V8 plus twin turbo V6 deisel would be nice. The seven seats have to stay so I can buy one for my soccer wife and get to enjoy it myself off road.

I wouldn't mind an option for a live axle up front, and of course this would require the rear no being converted to independant as the rumors regarding the nissan are stating...
V8 option would also be a good choice - diesel or petrol!

As an idea, the GX & GXL's being aimed at the offroader with solid axles types and the VX & Grande versions being more soccer mum versions with the IFS and fancy stuff... Obviously maintaining that the more advanced stuff like traction control and the like can be optioned to the Solid axle versions at request... But maybe thats all too hard, and non-cost effective - still be good though... Would cater for all type then and possibly even pull a few of the die-hard nissan owners over to toyota...

I would like to see a V6 turbo diesel option available on all models matched to a six speed (or better) auto.

Ive seen plenty of Ti patrols,Grande's and Kakadu's that get off road regularly and as many GX's and GXL's that have never been off road. Just because I like the luxury's doesn't mean I don't want to get it dirty. Saying that the lower models should be available with KDSS and diff locks etc..

Regards higher tow rating (said in another post) do many people actually tow 2500kg or above with a prado ?

I agree with you there Dazza. Not a very nice generalisation there, but I do understand Matty's reasoning! Isn't Toyota's answer to this dilemma the FJ Cruiser?

I do agree with you completely! I never said that the Grande would not be taken offroad, or did i say that the GXL would, it was only an example to highlight an idea - and that idea was simply to start with something, continue with the option pack upgrades - cos ideally that is what they are upgrades - whether the live axle be the option or the IFS, not my choice! Take the grande offroad, purchased with the type of suspension to suit the use that the car will be used for, decided entirely by the purchaser...

I would like to think that the fancy traction control computers and electronically control offroad asistance feature be kept as option packs for the lower models - as while some people swear by them and the be all and end all of offroad driving, others perfer to have a more in-control feeling of the car than having the car decide some things for them.

As for the 2500kg towing capacity or increase to (as previously stated) 3000kg, why not - it you have the biggest and badest caravan out there and loaded it up, what would it be? And then comes to the point, if you can afford such things (i can't) - what happens if 2500kg isn't enough? Secondly, as most of us have rear reovery hitches that slip into the towbar hitch would not a little extra strength be a good idea? Considering we use gear rated at over 4 ton on a 2.5 ton rated device? I consider that a good idea!

Again, its all personal preference, and I doubt that any two members of even this forum could come up with the same theories and ideas.

                      Re: 180 Series Prado

The new 2011 Patrol is definitely shedding the live axles for independent suspension all 'round. It's also getting a petrol 300Kw 5.6 V8 under the bonnet with diesel yet to be decided. I tend to think that manufacturers will be moving away from the more simplistic, rugged offroad designs that have tended to prevail in the past for new "softer" gadget laden 4WD's. Whether or not this is a good thing depends on who the customer is. Unfortunately, I think that the small market share that represents true offroad enthusiasts will not be so well represented in future models.

I know it's not a Prado but maybe offers some insight into where 4WD manufacturers are headed:

A six speed manual across the range would be good, I maybe old school but autos off road is not for me.

If they bring out a Hybrid Version then the prado name will be worthless.
I would like to see more 4x4 options, such as on board air compressors, diff locks and things like that, but most people will still go after market.
I think they need to improve on the Head lights and tail lights. The 150 Head lights make the front look squished and the rear lights look plastic.
And a better cover for the spare wheel, the current one looks like a CRV one.
I do like that they are making the 150 short wheel base.
If they made a Twin Turbo V8 with all the extras everyone wants, its only going to push prices further up.
Top of the range prado (Kakadu) is $89 000
Top of the range 200 series (Sahara) is $116 000.
If they put a twin turbo v8 in the prado its going to put them around the same price unless they offer the twin turbo V8 in all modles which they wont.
                              Thats my rant over.........
