Re: Cooper ST vs BFG A/Ts

I have just fitted BFG 275/65/17s. I don't know what people are going on about 'slippery in the wet'?? Granted, mine are still fresh, and maybe that would be the case at 70% wear, but I have nothing but praise for them at the moment. rain or shine, they are so much better performance than street rubber in all offroad areas, and on the street. The only downside is they are slightly noisier than the Grandtreks.

Which model prado do you have. I have a 2005 1kz auto and have recently fitted 265/70/17s and it has changed the driveability. There is now a lag at around 80k's(most driving for us) where it feels like it is overgeared. Fuel consumption has gone up .5l as well.

      Just something to consider.

I imagine a manual, the D4D or V6 would not have noticed the change
auto d4d, is ur suspension stock? any rubbing?

reading few posts here and there and even though 265/70/17 are supposed to be the same size no matter who makes them, seems like BFG owners with stock suspension are not complaining about any guard rubbing whereas MT owners do, can anyone confirm?
No rubbing at all. Happy with everything but the drop in power. Your D4D should be fine!

Have to say, I have the same query over the 'slippery in the wet' comments. Admittedly it was a different vehicle, however I ran BFG ATs on my previous 80 series for over 10 years, and the only times the tyres got slippery was when they were old and due for replacement due to the compount hardening up.

Otherwise they were a great tyre - except mud - and I'm still seriously considering fitting them (with MT ATZ4s also on the short list) when the D694s (on the vehicle when I bought it) wear out.

Tassie Tiger, was that consumption measured by your speedo (odometer) or a GPS?

As the 70 profile tyres go further per revolution, your actual fuel consumption may not be as bad as you think

People might find this an interesting comparison, it is a Cooper STT (Mud tyre) vs a BFG AT, have a look at the pictures and then I will tell you the history of the 2 tyres.

Both tyres are on trailers and have only ever been run on trailers, so no drive or wheel spin to affect them. Both trailers are exclusively towed behind Prados, the draw pin to wheel distance is all but identical on both trailers. The cooper tyre is on a slightly heavier trailer but has independent coils suspension as opposed to the beam axle leaf spring on the BFG trailer.

The Cooper has basically done 1 trip to the High country and back, add in a little bit of around town and a few hundred more K of blacktop work.

The BFG did EXACTLY the same high country trip, as well as another high country trip, oh and a trip across Googs track http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...ond-with-AJ120 and an 11,000km Outback trip including over 5,000k of that on outback dirt roads and goat tracks http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...utback-Odyssey and a few weekend jaunts offroad and a bitumen trip Christmas before last and maybe a few others I have forgotten about.

            Make up your own mind

            Cheers Andrew

I just replaced my BFG 275/65/17 AT's today. They were new in May 2009 and lasted 120,000km including three trips into the Kimberly and one from WA, across the bottom end and up the the Cape in North Qld. No punctures or other negative issues to report as far as the tyre is concerned, but availability has been terrible. I haven't been able to get any replacements since March 2014 or 100,000km so choose your size wisely.

I'm in the market for some BFG 265/70/17s. With the release of the KO2 models, has anyone seen some good prices running around on either AT models? I'm in Cairns, but it may be a good comparison if the freight doesn't work out cheaper. They're about $350 to $360 here. Cheers

Just bought 6 at $315 each in Cairns. Was told the same version about the KO2 availability. No biggie for me. If they could do the job in 2014, then I'm sure they can do it aswell in 2015

Interesting guys. Just to throw my experience into the ring. I fitted a set of Cooper AT3's to my Prado 120 in 2011. They are the LT265/65R17's. I'm a member of the Toyota Landcruiser Club and have used the tyres both on the road and off road. On Easter Monday I was doing some off road stuff and punctured the side wall of one of my tyres which have now done very close to 80000km. They still have significant tread left on them - approx. 8mm so I think that they would have been good for at least another 10-15000km. Apart from the unfortunate side wall puncture (which I was able to repair with my tire repair kit) I would highly recommend these tyres. I have been told by a number of tyre experts that the side wall puncture could happen to any tyre and that I shouldn't blame the tyre. I am planning to get a set of the Cooper ST Maxx and keep a couple of the old AT3's for the spare. The ST Maxx is supposed to have a stronger sidewall.

Interesting read. I ran a set of BFG A/T KO LT265/65/R17 for nearly 4 years. When new, Itook them up through central Australia travelling along some of the Oodnadatta track, William Creek through to Coober Pedy (very rough and stoney at the time), the Mereenie Loop from Kings Canyon to Hermansberg, the Binns Track through the East McDonell Ranges, then up the highway to Kakadu. By this time the tyres were chipped and looking a bit worse for wear. By the time I got across through the Kimberley via the Gibb River Road, then down through the Pilbarra the BFGs were in a pretty sorry state, severely chipped on the outer edges. I was running reduced pressures on the dirt road (26psi front and 28psi rear). Apart from the chipping the tread depth was fine, so I continued to use them for the next 3 years. I recently fitted Cooper S/T Maxx LT265/65/R17 for a run up the Oodnadatta Track, across the Simpson Desert, and back down the Birdsville Track. The Prado was heavily laden with 2 adults, 2 teenage kids, fuel, water, food and camping gear. Despite many very rough stoney sections along the tracks the Coopers show no signs of chipping. I've done nearly 10,000km on these tyres and they still look almost new. Very happy with the Coopers so far.

I wonder how the newer BFG A/T KO2s are performing through similar conditions? The variety of experiences with both brands of tyres makes me wonder how consistent the manufacturing process is and whether there are just dud batches.
