I ask myself "it must serve some other purpose" :?: :?: Especially for an off road vehicle, its not everyday that you go 4x4ing to meet a client and happen to rip your business card out from the glove box card holder.... Toyota are big on cost savings, every cent saves them a ton of money. My question is, how the heck did this get passed? It's so overly chunky for a card holder too! -end rant-

So solutions... has anyone torn it out?
I discovered one of these things too but haven't actually worked out how to use it?? It's about a cm high and quite a bit wider than a credit card. The slot is big enough to get about 5 business cards or 1 credit card into it which seems pretty useless. Am I missing something? Can the box be somehow opened to fit more cards in?

And to those who asked, no it doesn't cover any "bulge" under the dash, just wasted blank space above that. Im sure it would be for some fandangled gadget we dont get in the AU market, hence it was cheaper for them to jam in a useless $2 card holder than run two different glovebox layouts.

I was pretty keen on putting my tekonsha p3 in that spot but threw that idea in the too hard basket and just drilled some holes in the dash!

Help please removing glove box card holder!

I spent about 30 minutes last night trying to get the glove box card holder out and all I managed to do was damage and break some plastic bits. So any advice on how to remove it will be appreciated, thanks.

I want to use the space to store a USB Hard Disk for my new stereo

Thought I'd share the answer to save anyone else trying to do this some time. You have to remove the plastic glove box shroud because the card holder is screwed in from behind.

Pretty simple 20 minute job. Sorry for the blurry photos.

I know this thread is really old now, but I took the card holder out and the space left is a perfect spot for mounting a uhf radio unit that has the contols mounted on the microphone. You just need to grind off a coulpe of the little plastic ridges that are left after removing the holder.

                    For what its worth.....

The card holder is most probably there to replace the Japanese electronic toll system where you insert a e-toll type credit card into a card reader which then becomes your own built in e-toll pass. Have seen them on many private import vehicles like skylines etc.

I like the idea of fitting a UHF though!

Removing the Card Holder in the Glovebox

Older thread, but thought I'd add my solution.

I removed my card holder and installed a 12V socket, into which I have plugged my dashcam. No more cables in the cabin!!!!

To remove the card holder and get access to the area, you need to remove the glovebox. I have posted instructions on how to do this in another post:
                      http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...l=1#post485802

There are quite a few resources here explaining how to wire up new 12V sockets. For just a dashcam, easy enough to just tap off one of the existing ones. The one on the REAR of the centre console (in the 2nd row) is easy to access.

In my case, I ran a new relay circuit, because I also installed another new socket on the centre console (near the 4wd controls). I trigger the relay from the ignition, which I picked up from the 12V socket on the rear of the console. Happy to provide more details if anyone wants to know how.

For the dashcam cable itself, I ran this up the windscreen and just pushed in under the roof trim. I then removed the left-hand A-Pillar cover (by undoing the two bolts on the grab handle), and ran the cable carefully down the A-Pillar, well away from the airbag. With the cover removed, there is a big gap behind the dash to run the cable. It then goes behind the glovebox and plugs into the new 12V socket in the Glovebox.

NOTE: Don't run dashcam cables OVER the A-Pillar and down the door trim. The curtain airbag runs from about half-way up the A-Pillar across the roof, so any cables running over the A-Pillar will interfere with the Airbag (or at least cause the dashcam to go flying viciously in the accident, and you will miss all that great footage )

I gutted the card holder and it is where the 2Tb Hard Drive for my Android, along with a bunch of USB connectors for my Asteroid Smart Nav/Media .

That's a good idea. It's a really annoying waste of space as a 'Card Holder', but once removed, quite a versatile space for other equipment !

but way over designed for simply holding cards. does anyone know if the japanese, saudi or us models use it for other tech-related purpose?

                              Hey Prado_The_2nd,

Where did you source the 12v socket from? From what I can see, it looks nearly OEM - I am chasing one to stick next to existing OEM (manual).

Also, do you happen to know the dimensions of the card holder recess? Wondering if a Uniden UH8060 would fit in there [24mm (H) x 100mm (W) x 95 mm (D)] - would save having to hack up a blank switch plate for the handpiece ext - just leave it all in glovebox until required.

                                Hi Shodown,

Sorry for slow response - have been away for a couple of days.

The socket is not very OEM like - perhaps just my tricky camera angle to make it look good. I've attached a couple more photos - one of the card holder socket, the other of a socket I added to the centre console. I picked up both parts at one of the 4x4 shows - something similar to this: http://www.12volt.com.au/redirect.ht...03/plugs2.html (scroll down to the Cigarette Socket Surface Mount section). I can try finding more details if you want.

In terms of the space for the Uniden UH8060, will fit without any issues. The fascia of the card holder is 40x98, but the space behind the fascia is considerably wider and over 150mm deep (up to about 180mm). You can probably see this in the photo. Don't forget to also calculate the clearance for the MIC cable - you might need to set the unit back a little more (but there is plenty of room).
