  • Dash vibration when engine lugging ....

There was a post about this somewhere in this forum which I can't find ......... anyone help?

Anyway - I noticed my 150 Lc4 (VX) also does it at around 2500 rpm when the engine is clearly in too lower a gear for the conditions - I 'fix' it by flicking the gear stick over to S and dropping down a gear. Is there an ECU upgrade available now to modify this as I understand there is re. transmission hot warning light coming on too early? I'm sure I was in the middle of reading about these two issues on this forum - but as I say I can't find them now.... :?

Found the posting(after hours of searching) under 'diesel engine'! ....... vibe around 1500 rpm which now appears more accurate than my 2500 (got it wrong basically).... still, as no one responded to this, my latest post, its clearly not an issue......... so shall just change down as and when........

      Dannyson,

There are a number of posts on this under the heading "Vibration at 1500rpm"
Mine as well as a number of others have had this problem as well as the transmission overheating light come on under load.
My dealer fixed the vibration issue last week as they were aware of it and had a field fix available.
They also performed a re program of the transmission ecu and this has also helped immensly.

Re: Dash vibration when engine lugging ....

The vibration is the front right hand guard resonation at certain revs, in my Prado the sound seemed to be coming from the front right hand speaker. My dealer fixed it at the first service.

Hey there is a little plastic tab that were removing from the corner of the windscreen on the outside.
the guard rubs on it due to the intake being in the right hand front guard.

No ... I still don't understand where you mean .... is it the windscreen scuttle area (where the wipers sit)? ... that soppy bit of 'triangular' type of shape plastic that sits in the corner that one can move around with your finger? ...... I can't believe this would cause such a deep resonating sound from the dash..... surely..... :?

The dealer should install some additional packing under the trim below the wipers, that fixed mine. All this is covered under the 1500RPM vib thread.

                  Hi all,

mine fixed today from 10,000km regular service.
I told the blacktown toyota in sydney and it seems they already know about the problem.
I pick up the car this afternoon and the rattle noise is GONE!!

Only problem I have now is rattle noise from sunroof that they say "VERY UNUSUAL for Kakadu".

CALL YOUR DEALER SERVICE, I am pretty sure they would know very well by now.

Hi guys, did you know that the D4D uses more fuel at 1500rpm than at 2100rpm doing the same work? Slip it across to S4 when you are below 90kmh and as long as you keep a light foot you will use LESS fuel, Less engine noise, No vibrations and No flat spot at intersections. Fuel use figures from the Scangauge.

I have had the 1500rpm dash vibration in my Prado 150 for 6 months. Found it the other day. It was the long plastic cover between the wiper arms and wiper motor assy. I pulled the cover off turned it upside down and taped it with my fingers until I found the rattle. Found cover has a plastic welded vent joined under it . I glued the cover to the vents. Problem solved.

I had an annoying vibration at 1500rpm that seem to come from behind the speedo or RHS dash speaker. I removed the little rubber/plastic windscreen corner piece and the vibration went away. Hard to believe it could cause the problem. If I get more vibration in the future I will then assume something to do with the air intake. Thanks for the tip.

Re: Dash vibration when engine lugging ....

Just flip the lever over to SPORT mode and it will go down to 4. I have started using the engine to slow me down by pulling it down to lower gears and also keeping it in a lower gear on acceleration. The diesel changes up to 5 quite early as it has the power to push without struggling but it does vibrate.

I live with the vibration as it is inherent with diesels. 'buses, trucks, ferries, boats, all do it. If i wanted smoothness I would have gone for the V6 petrol.

I am driving a hire SV6 VE Commodore at the moment and I miss the noise, vibration, and pulling power of the diesel. The Commodore has heaps of acceleration and is super quiet but I rather like the vibration of the diesel engine.

Each to their own but potential Prado purchasers should consider the engine before they buy.

Interesting, I took mine back again because it had returned after about 4mths (they put foam packing in there to stop it) and they are ordering a replacement for the plastic cover you mentioned. Maybe it has been modified to stop the problem. Given the feedback on the other thread regarding 1500rpm vibration, it would appear that the cause is the intake rubbing against the guard as snorkel installation appers to also remove the problem.

Agreed, flick it to sport and put it into '5', drives like a normal auto but won't automatically engage engine breaking. A different car to drive IMO in sport MUCH more responsive. A still reckon they need to tweak the tranny firmware to improve shifting points and reduce lugging.
