  • Running electrical wires down the side

    Hi,
I'm about to run some wires down the left hand side of my 150 series prado for connection to an Anderson connector to charge my caravan & also for my tekonsha brake controller.
I did this previously in a kluger but prado looks like a nightmare.

I've worked out the door sills just click out & I managed to remove the back left floor panel but not sure about the rest.. don't want to break anything as car is brandnew
Do I need to remove the plastic surround from the rear wheel arche , or is there a way to feed it through.. I'll probably end up working it out but any advice would be appreciated..

Here's what I have so far:

Re: Running electrical wires down the side

Where are you Don? i'd be happy to help, if your close by.

running the cable down the sill track, by removing the plastic trim as you have done to the rear seats. you will need to remove the tread plate in the rear seats as well.

but you're pretty much the way there. from the back seats you should be able to get the cable through to the back cavity that houses the bottle jack. i used a bit of flooring tongue to help it along by taping the cable to the tongue and pushing it through behind the plastic.

from there, you can go under the plastic trim and through the grommit in the floor pan to get the cable outside for the anderson plug and the electric brakes.

no need to break anything, just take your time and give gentle pressure to everything.

Re: Running electrical wires down the side

G'day Dan , thanks for the offer I'm from the Hills area of Sydney.. Cheers for the offer but I think I've got it covered. Your information is helpful & so is a lot of other posts I've found on this site. Once I've run the cables , I'll then be installing a dual battery tray.

          Hey Derek,

you wouldn't happen to have instructions and pictures to do this on a 120 series would you? I'm running cable down the RHS sills to get to the 12v socket at the back. Replacing the cable and the socket to a merit one.

          Cheers,

Why wouldn't you just run a sheathed cable along the chassis, around the tank, etc following the main chassis rail and hooking up near your trailer plug?

This is for the 12v socket in the boot... not the trailer

The original poster wanted to run an anderson plug for his caravan and another wire for a brake controller. The anderson plug would be easy as to fit along the chassis rail directly from battery to towbar with no need to go pulling plastic trim from the interior.

Hi, I'm about to start the same job of running a wire to the rear of my new Prado, if you have instructions and pictures that you could send me that would be great.

Abso, Derek (ABR) doesn't seem to post much these days. His business still operates so google ABR Sidewinder and email Derek. He also has a number of instructions and information in pdf format on his site so you might find what you are looking for there.

You can also google pradopoint+rear+power and find details here too.

G'day, I started this tread a few years back & ran the wires from the aux battery then down the passenger side. It terminates next to the tow bar on a 175amp Anderson connector. I taped into this wire in the little compartment near the tail light which goes to a 50amp Anderson that I connect to my engel fridge.
Since I've done this I've travelled 40000klm & it's passed the test of time..

Ok, I'm a bit confused. I'm trying to do the same thing - run wires properly from the front to the back of the car. They have been sitting on the carpet, under the mats, for over a year now so it's time to tidy it up.

I've pulled off all the trims and can see the channel where the factory wiring goes along under the door step trims. I ran my wires down the "outside" edge (since it's lovely and big) and started putting things together.

That's when I realised that the door step trims use the spare space between the factory wiring and the outside edge of the vehicle to give the step trim some extra support.

                        I'm trying to run
                        - big DC cable for internal anderson plug/etc
                        - smaller DC cable for brake controller
                        - 2 smaller cables (like CAT5 ethernet cable) for other things

and I can't see how to get them to fit if they don't go on the outside edge.

I've seen some photos of a 120 series but it's factory cabling is a lot smaller in diameter than our 150.

How do people get 8AWG twin + other stuff to fit in there? I could get everything but the big twin in - should I just run it under the car?

                          Hi Peter
I ran mine in the chassis, then a cable back into the rear compartment, 2013 made.
I used 6AWG with a 5mm blue and 3mm red all in a protective sheath for anderson and brakes.
Then a 6mm twin for power back into vehicle, that then went to a fuse block for take off points.
                          Cheers
                          Charlie

                            Peter,

I ran mine down the same spot, can't remember if it was in the factory channel or beside it but it fitted a twin6B&S for the Anderson plug, an twin 8B&S fro the rear power and a twin wire for the rear light switch on the drivers sided. The brake wiring went down the passenger side.

                            Regards

                            Aidan
