Hi Fellas. Real good mod. Always had milky rear diff oil at 20,000 km change until I did the extension diff breather. No water crossings at all - can only put it down to water spray in monsoon type rain situations. Clear oil now 2 changes in a row and will go out to 40 k between changes. Cheers for a good thread.

Did the breather extensions today, Roo I see what you mean about the stock breathers not working as when I removed the rear one there was a fair bit of hissing from air going in.

Just as a comment from my go at doing it, I removed the mount that the jack sits in (was a little bit tricky to get the bolts out due to space but got it done) which meant I could just grab the hose with my hand to pull it up through the jack/tool compartment and not bother with trying to find it with a coathanger.

Good write up and thanks for the help RogueAussie.

Another Jobby I have to do. (wait a minute with a WB and a Kombi to work on so they keep running) I can only dream about the prado. Should I also do the gear box and transfer case breathers? cheers Passin

Hi Fellas. Regarding threading the hose up to the jack area - I removed the grommet, poked the end of a 1/16" welding rod (end folded over tightly) up the tube a short way then taped the tube to the rod using insulation tape. Fed the 1/16" welding rod through the grommet hole and up into the jack area and drew up the hose. Piece of cake. Hope this helps. Cheers.

slightly off topic but what diff oil is good? and any tips on changing it or is it pretty simple?

I use Castrol LSX90, but there are numerous brands of oil to choose from. Make sure you're able to remove the filler plug before loosening the drain plug, because it wouldn't fun to find that the filler plug has seized after you've already drained the diff.

Please direct any further non diff breather related questions to another thread to keep this one on topic.

Yes, definitely...the same breathers are used on all 4.
I ran the front, the autotrans and the transfer case forward, up into the engine bay and the rear to the jack compartment on my Prado 95.
                Prado 95, not quite original!

Wow, I've been away for a while and catching up on some reading. I gots me a good feelin' after reading all the posts to this thread. I am glad I could help some people out with what is really a simple DIY but can be daunting to those that have concerns.

I can honestly say that since doing the breathers and the snorkle, I have crossed a lot of water, including the Murray which was lapping at the windscreen and still the old girl powers on.

                  Happy Driving!

Perfect .... just what I had been looking for. Now I not only get guidance, but a complete illustration too.
                    Thanks for sharing your efforts.

Just a question, why did you put on the mileage on the filters? Is that to remind you of a replacement, if so, after how long would you replace them?
