so I thought I may give this a go and called Toyota to find out about the gaskets for the throttle body and inlet manifold.
all good on the inlet manifold have stock in Melbourne cost $18 for the 4
The Throttle body they have none in AU and would need to order from Japan and take 4weeks to arrive, cost $9.15.
Don't really have the 4weeks to wait as myine is up for the 160k service now.

I guess my question is, how important is it to change the gasket and are they the paper/carboard type that you could use as a template and cut a new one yourself from the correct material?

Isn't it amazing how different the Toyota prices are? One guy buys the lot for $13.50 your quoted $28.00 and I get quoted $40.00!!!
      Bunch of barstools.
Wonder if you can buy these aftermarket...Repco or the like?

Just smear the old one with some motor oil and replace with a new one whenever you get it.

thanks guys some good advice there.
Think I'll try and remove it carefully for now and hopefully no issues.
I'll order the new one and replace it when it comes in.

This one fits as far as I know, it stainless 1mm thick.

EDIT...If you could give me the hole centres of your gasket, I can check it against the one above.
              It looks very similar.
              Cheers Rod.

Well I did my service today and all I can say is wow what a difference my inlet manifold is from the ones in this post. My 120 has done 160 000 and it looks nothing like the ones here, almost junk free. I took the throttle body off as the butterfly valve had about 2mm of junk on 1 half of 1 side but the rest of the throttle body and I could see metal, the inlet manifold was a little dirty but could still see metal in most of it. Gave it a quick wipe out and put it all back together without any issues.
Silly me forgot to take photos as well

Ok, so I ordered the gaskets today. About $29 for the lot from the local dealer here.

There was no Throttle body gaskets in Oz, and it ex Japan. Perhaps there has been a bit of a run on them lately?

Now can anyone tell me if I am likely to destroy the old one? Im a Diesel mechanic, and know how to be careful etc, but havent worked on these small motors before. The manual doesnt show it clearly. Is it a paper, metal, fibre?
Has anyone actually destroyed one? The manual shows it as a non-reusable part of course.

                      Any advice appreciated thanks
                      Cheers

Its paper but reusable (or at least mine would have been).

It metal I think,( not sure)the new one didn't look to different that the one I removed. Its hard and had clips on with little tabs.Should be a piece of piss for a mechanic.
Easy enough to get to the throttle body but the manifold is a mission.I used petrol to clean everything and sprayed carby cleaner in to the motor and cleaned as much up with a rag as possible.Very dirty job .
The manual said to disconnect the battery while doing the job as I also did injectors and glow plugs. I didn't bleed the injectors and in started after turning over a few times no problems I Just pumped the hand pump until in was to hard to pump.I also replaced the fuel filter as it was due. ( Bought a genuine one from e-bay for $35)
I haven't found a difference in power yet. It's still a gutless diesel. Maybe the fuel economy will improve.Mine is the old motor with a 4 speed auto.I'll see if the economy improves and report back when I finish a tank.
                          Cheers Russ

It's a stainless steel gasket, each to their own; but I reused the intercooler inlet, venturi and EGR gaskets. As long as the raised section of the gasket still springs up it'll be fine to reuse.

But like I said, each to their own. Personally I stopped throwing money Toyotas way a long time ago.

I removed my throttle body on the weekend and had no problems re using the throttle body gasket. The ones pictured above are where the EGR connect to the inlet manifold, I didnt take that off so can't comment on that one.

Thanks guys for the quick responses

Russ, I am driving similar vintage, with 4 speed, and Im probably not expecting any more power, but my vehicle goes from extremes of running around a country town, to suddenly towing van to Coral Bay, Exmouth or pushing through heavy sand tracks down South coast. (Nornalup in 2 weeks!!)
I will feel a bit better knowing the residue isnt there in the old oil burner.
Im expecting it to be a dirty job. Might run the manifold into work and put through the robo wash.

MickL; I share your views regarding Toyota parts. I got a few looks today in our local dealer when I went to buy parts. Guys there that I hadnt seen for years, and they hadnt seen me in years either. I am lucky tho to have 2 x pretty reasonable dealers nearby. They run a pretty good show.
                                Cheers
