Re: how to remove 1KZ intercooler and clean throttle body

Hi guys, I had the Wynns EGR3 treatment done on my car yesterday at a local workshop. So far, the car accellerates noticably better from stand still, requires less throttle input to accelerate while already moving and shuts down a lot smoother. The idle is somewhat smoother as well. Not sure if this will improve fuel usage or not but I'll post an update next time I fill up.

Yes that's the one. I only got the spray applied. I didn't bother with the fuel additive as I run Vortex diesel which supposedly keeps the injectors clean.

Re: how to remove 1KZ intercooler and clean throttle body

I know this is an old post, I wanted to let members know about a recent experience having my inlet manifold and butterfly valve cleaned by Berrima Diesel.
I had a diesel tune and chip fitted at Berrima Diesel and they recommended having the manifold cleaned as " it was one of the worst they have seen". Booked it in, and was told pretty quick job. Long story ...short version.
Not quite sure what they did and neither are they, they did block up the hose that runs from/to the EGR valve and that was one of the codes that came up when the engine warning light came on, I think the other was TPM ? It seems that when cleaning the throttle body fluid has gotten into somewhere it shouldn't. End result new part from Toyota in Japan....
Never had other problems reported according to Moss Vale Toyota, where the car still is. No date given for the repair, ordered the part 3 days before the tsunami hit... Bugger.
As I say no-one can tell me what or why this happened, take care doing this at home, Berrima Diesel are the diesel specialists so it could happen to anyone I guess.

Re: how to remove 1KZ intercooler and clean throttle body

My trucks turn to have the inlet system cleaned after reading this thread

Before I started I bought the inlet manifold and throttle body gaskets from Toyota for $13.50  cheep iz!

The plan was to just clean the throttle body on the hope that the manifold would be okay.

Pulled the intercooler and then the throttle body. Similar condition to the others that have been done.

Then checked out the manifold - holy crap it was worse than throttle body. A slimey gunky sticky goop.

So the manifold had to come off.

The gunk extended into the head ports.

Cleaned the throttle body with carb r clean and a toothbrush. About 10 min and it was sweet iz.

Then did the same with the intake manifold. The manifold has lots of twists and turns and is pretty hard to clean out. Used a can of carb clean and then soaked it in petrol for 1/2 hour. Used rags and toothbrush to clean. There was heaps of crud - about 3-5 mm everywhere. Cleaned the inlet ports with a rag as much as possible.

Fitted new gaskets and bolted it all together. The inlet manifold gaskets have a squish ridge in the middle and you could really feel it compress when torquing up the manifold.

Also blocked off the EGR with a screw in the vaccuum hose - take that sucker

Then a test drive. It starts easier and has better performance. More responsive. Did the wife test and she said it was going better than before.

            HIghly recommended.

            Thanks for the original post!

            A few thoughts;

The amount of gunk that was in the inlet manifold makes me think it has to come off to do it properly. Sure you could put EGR cleaner through the system while it was running but I really can see how it could clean the inlet manifold near well enough. Sure, the throttle body would because the flow is directly over it but the manifold would be a huge mix of swirling air that it couldnt, IMO, get it all.

Plus, the manifold had to soak in carb clean for a good 10min and even scrubbing it didnt all come away. The petrol soak really cleaned it up.

Also, there was a serious amount of gunk left over once the petrol had evaporated away. Sure its carbon but I dont think that amount should be allowed to sludge itself through the engine.

I would suggest if you are going to do this then I would pull the manifold as well and you will know its done perfectly. It took from 5.30 to 8.15 including a test drive.

A few things that slow it up/watch out for.

Make sure you have pliers/compressors that will fit the hose clamps on the intercooler. My big pair were missing (kids use them as guns  ) and it took a good twenty minutes to get them back on.

There is a big nut on the rear of the EGR that attached the pipe to the EGR. Spray this with lube the day before if possible. Its a hard thing to get to but is made easier if you remove the injector pipes first. Unbolt the EGR off the manifold and leave it in place in the vehicle.

The pipe closest to the block on the injector pump is difficult to get to but you can get it with a normal open ender at an angle.

You need to unbolt the power steering reservoir from the manifold and one of the two bolts that hold it down on the block so it can pivot away.

Remove the oil filter and a bonus is you can clean the oil filter drain hole on the casting so the oil drains better when you undo the filter in the future.

Other than that its all pretty straight forward.

Dont worry about cracking off the injector lines to prime them as it started up with air in the lines.

            Have fun.

                  ### UPDATE ####

Ran a tankful of fuel through since demuckinising and very impressed

We run an average of 12.8 to 13.0 lphk.

This tank was down to 12.2.

Adjusted for speedo error due to the larger tyres and it ran 11.9. Thats almost all around town and some country 80 zones.

Cool and thanks for the thread!

                    good write up Tassie Tiger.
still haven't done my inlet manifold yet, but it's booked in in 2 weeks.
just hard to beleive that they get so dirty, when few other vehicles do this.
i'm sure a piece of copper plate will fix this issue from returning afterwards.

Re: how to remove 1KZ intercooler and clean throttle body

well finally cleaned my intake manifold and head inlets.
the pic was what i was able to scrape out of the head intakes with a screw driver

day 1;took about 3hrs to remove manifold and clean it,
day 2; took about 3hrs to reistall manifold, make a steel EGR gasket  , and port the intake side of my intercooler.
6mm i was able to remove/enlarge intake hole by. should get better top end boost.
haven't driven it yet, but will over the weekend.
was unable to get clear pics of how bad my inlet manifold was.
it was about 3-4mm of thick black sludge coating the internals.
the intake design is poor for flow/size to cylinders 3&4 already. so should make a fair difference.
will let you all know after test drive

took the prado for a run to sydney and home.
                        much nicer to drive.
holds speeds better going up the hills, and rev/pull awesome.
3700rpm and still pulling strong. had to pull out at that time as the roads were so wet and corner coming up.
will do a fuel consumption run next tanks. for this tank i'm going to play with the increased power

Where in Tassie did you manage this? Best I can get from Toyota in Launceston is around $40.00 (4) inlet gaskets and (1) throttle body base gasket....
speaking to the parts guy there he said he'd never heard of the problem "ever" going by the reports here, it seems a very common problem??
                          Hope to do mine shortly.

                            HI

Coop Toyota supplied the gaskets. I didnt tell them why just can you order me these parts and they got them in after a week or so.

                            cheers

Filled up after another 1300kms and the mileage is virtually the same at 12 lpk (last was 11.9 lphk)

                              All good!

Intake manifold to head gaskets 4 x 17177-67011. Torque from the centre of the manifold out to the ends 29Nm. Throttle body (Venturi) gasket 26171-67030. Torque the four bolts to 20Nm. The throttle body needs to be cleaned from time to time, check them every 50,000 kms or so. I always use Locktite Carb. cleaner for cleaning the throttle bodies, also good for cleaning the manifold. Any good quality carb. cleaner will do. Be careful not to drop the throttle body as it could damage the motor. I always remove them from the manifold because of dirt etc..You will get better performance and economy with a clean throttle body. Glow plugs should be changed every 100,000 kms with the injectors. For glow plugs I always use JKT CP-22, they are made in Japan. Set of 4, $110.00 trade and go exchange on the injectors.
                                Hope this helps.
Does anyone know the part number for the EGR valve to inlet manifold gasket?? Looking to Damonat's gasket mod, and thought the gasket would make a great template for it, just have to forget to drill the centre hole out!! Wink, Wink!
