Re: how to remove 1KZ intercooler and clean throttle body

I mentioned to my wife that I had done something (but didn't give her any specifics) then told her to let me know if she thought the car was any different. She commented how much easier it was to start and also that it seemed to run smoother ... So I'm not making things up

will be doing this shortly after returning.
this will also give me an idea as to how much affect the EGR is having.
if butterfly is found to be getting dirty already, then i'll make my own gasket (without the hole) to fix that.
if it appears ok, i'll leave it.
      will take pics either way.
will be sending inlet manifold away to be professionally cleaned, to ensure it is done properly.

      PS
i have had my exhaust/dump pipe done since cleaning the throttle body.
i have so far picked up 100+ extra kms over both tanks.
not sure which gave me this, but it is a totally much nicer vehicle to drive now.
in the days prior to exhaust it was better, so i'll never know exactly

any update Damo, have you taken the manifold off yet?

Re: how to remove 1KZ intercooler and clean throttle body

yer yer just got back this morning.
i'll be doing it so and i will post the pictures.
it drives so much better on the highway.
that's what happens when things occur slowly over time. you don't notice the change.
got another job to do first, so after this it will happen.

unsure why you would be removing the rocker cover to complete this job,
but if you do, toyota use a rubber seal on the rocker cover, so you can re-use it.
however if you have high KM's i suggest replacing the seal, as it dries out and doesn't seal as well.
manifold gasket. not sure yet. i know toyota use metal gasket for most manifolds these days,
so i'm thinking it will, but when it comes time for me to do mine, i will be replacing it anyway.
i don't want any issues resulting in having to remove it another time for a leak of boost.

How bad was it (compared to the photos posted earlier) and what's the mileage on the car?

Re: how to remove 1KZ intercooler and clean throttle body

I've just done mine, thanks to Damo and his excellent pics & instructions which made it easy, but having done it I have a couple more questions:

                          1. There is a sensor (i think that's what it is) in the right angle bend between the intercooler and throttle body, which was covered in a light film of black oily stuff (highly technical... ). Any ideas what this is, whether it can be cleaned and if so, with what (i thought maybe the spray on electrical contact cleaner)?

                          2. There was definitely a build up of the "black toothpaste" (more jargon) in the inlet manifold. What's the best way to get that clean? Send it away to be professionally done or do it chemically (eg subaru/wynns upper engine cleaner) at the next service, or will the PradoPoint DIY knowledge pool come to the rescue again? Damo mentioned doing this but never posted a result/reply as other priorities got in the way.

                          Cheers

just clean it with carby cleaner. it's sensor turbo boost/flow.

best to remove it and take to to a motor machine shop, where they can clean it by way of hot wash/bath. still haven't done mine. a couple of other jobs have/are getting done first.

                            Cheers

Intake manifold to head gaskets 4 x 17177-67011. Torque from the centre of the manifold out to the ends 29Nm. Throttle body (Venturi) gasket 26171-67030. Torque the four bolts to 20Nm. The throttle body needs to be cleaned from time to time, check them every 50,000 kms or so. I always use Locktite Carb. cleaner for cleaning the throttle bodies, also good for cleaning the manifold. Any good quality carb. cleaner will do. Be careful not to drop the throttle body as it could damage the motor. I always remove them from the manifold because of dirt etc..You will get better performance and economy with a clean throttle body. Glow plugs should be changed every 100,000 kms with the injectors. For glow plugs I always use JKT CP-22, they are made in Japan. Set of 4, $110.00 trade and go exchange on the injectors.
                              Hope this helps.
