    I originally bought my 02/2005 Prado with 42000kms on a clock at back in December 2006. No engine issues to date, however I've replaced the starter motor in 2012, and I'm ready for 3rd clutch. Started towing a 2.4T boat around from Sept 2009 and replaced the original clutch with a extra heavy duty one at 180000kms. I'm currently at 353000kms and looking to either upgrade the vehicle or buy a new clutch and keep it for a while longer. As I mostly fish alone, I'm under my GCM but not by much.

      I just sold my 2005 GXL V6 Auto, had 345,XXXkms and hasn't missed a beat. I reckon the motor will outlast the rest of the car!

          One of my mates work ones has just hit 780,000 kms. No issues with engine yet apart from idler bearings and serpentine belt replacement.

              MIne has 283K on the clock, '04 GXL 5 speed manual. I don't know how many owners, but I will be the last. Engine is outlasting other things on the Prado...

                Just hit 450k with mine. Starter motor got replaced about 5k ago and the front bearing / crankshaft balancer seal is gone but still a while to go before the oil leak gets too bad. Other than that all pretty good so far. I bought it 10 years ago with 145k on the clock. Friends said I was mad buying such a high mileage car but I sure can't complain.

                  Im glad you ignored your friends when buying this car as they must’ve only owned Falcons or little 4cyl hatchbacks that start falling apart not far past this kilometre range. 145,000km is a young engine in 4wd terms. That’s what I would class as low kms.

                    Plenty of falcon taxis getting around with that sort of mileage (700K). It all depends on how the car is driven and what maintenance is done on it.

                      I own a 2003 GXL. I’ve taken it all around the country including Kakadu National Park about a 1000kms out from Darwin.

                      just clocked over 350000km. Engine going strong (has a small oil leak on left side of engine housing ?timing over location - mechanic says it’s not a problem). running so smoothly it’s crazy, still feels and drives like the day we got it back in WA 17 years ago.

                      Here are the major issues I’ve had to fix so far;
                      270000 km - new starter motor (fixed for $350)
                      320000 km - radiator leak (at a corner weld join it looks like) - second hand radiator bought for $88 + $220 labour/fluids
                      350000 km - major transmission leak (blown seal with broken torque converter) replaced the entire A340F + transfer case with a second hand transmission for $500 + about $1000 of labour + new ATF fluids including flushing of all lines/transmission cooler lines.

                      17 years on and a total of $2500 of replacement parts.

                      Am very happy with both the car and the ready availability of cheap spare parts from wreckers to keep her going!

                        More importantly it depends on the model. And all models are not built equal. I’d love to know the long long list of things that had to be replaced on that Falcon during that time. They’re not Prados and are not built anywhere near as well. They don’t just notch up high kms without a tonne of mechanical problems along the way.

                          My boss just had his 4.0 head gasket re-done, total cost $2k, engine had done 320,000km. No idea how good he is on maintenance/driving.

                            Heat cycles play a huge role in engine longevity. Those falcon taxi's (or any vehicle doing a similar job) will likely have a very long lifespan with minimal engine problems as they're constantly running and typically serviced regularly- Contrast this to an engine that gets started up for a 15 minute trip 3-4 times a day to drop the kids off or do shopping that is getting turned off shortly after warming up to operating temperature.

                              Hi I was researching when I came across this thread. I have a 2004 Prado with 430000 on the clock and hasn’t missed a beat until recently. Everything is great except when I tow a camer trailer. I’ve had to top her up with coolant twice over two weeks. Never have to normally.

                                Have a compression test done. Maybe leaky headgasket, Is it getting hot when towing? Fit an ultragauge or scan gauge to monitor your temps
