Mate most reckon they'll outlast the diesel. Close to indestructible. Very few issues at all with them and while I prefer the diesel as I change my car every five years I would be putting a second hand v6 on the shopping list if I was to grab one myself, poor resale makes them a bargain for someone who will keep it and benefit from the reliability. The cheaper purchase price blows the economy compared to a diesel out of the water. Not to mention diesel is 30c a litre dearer and maintenance is dearer on the diesel.

    Enjoy, just keep it serviced.

when you put it like that, makes the diesel sound very unappealing!

      except for water crossings..

I have a 2005 V6 auto. Bought it 7 years ago with 154k on the clock. Currently has 293,000 on the odometer. Never had any engine problems, no oil between changes. Mainly used as tow vehicle for our camper trailer. It has been to Alice Springs on the dirt twice and Cape York, so has done quite a bit off road. Its still running very well.

Well petrol motors tolerate water ingestion, diesels don't. It will bend a rod with just a drop. So diesels look worse all round.

But I still pick them for the torque, still out torques the V6 at all useful revs, but there are plenty of V6 owners here who love the revs and the performance that it brings.

You must be getting ripped off if you are paying 30c a litre more for diesel over petrol. Even in todays low oil price /cheap fuel price market the difference would be no more than 15c and less if the V6 users are buying a premium fuel.
That said I agree with your sentiments regarding the V6 and the appeal of a used example over a diesel. I too would buy one except for my caravan towing duties, and even then I still wonder about the V6 . Would be a bit quicker than my old ever reliable 1KZ. Excluding the price of the potential replacement injectors of a D4D I don't see too much difference in service/maintanace costs.

I normally don't check fuel prices because I don't pay for it. But I noticed on Friday or Saturday in Brisbane is was 1.26 or something for petrol and 1.48 or so for diesel. Premium petrol was prob dearer but I have put that stuff in a car for a decade. I assumed it was always dearer. Might explain why my boss opted for a 5.7L tundra instead of a Lc200 diesel. Reckons it's cheaper to run when on the highway and only slightly dearer around town.

Filled both my tanks today, $1.15 for 91 unleaded (not that ethanol crap) and diesel was $1.35 premium was $1.36 for memory.... Love my V6 4L. Likes a bit of a drink but not excessive in my opinion... Cheers Steve

Thought I would chime in here, it has been a while since I posted.

I used to own a 120 V6 petrol 2003 and traded it for a 2006 Diesel. Basically the lease was up and the new D4D was just launched so decided to try a diesel with the better fuel economy (plus the old diesel was too under powered).

Both cars identical and even the same colour. Now after 9 years of owning the 2006 120 diesel I am finally trading up to a 150 series and going back to a V6.

Why? Well Like many others have mentioned the savings are not really there for the diesel in the long run. Petrol prices go up and down but diesel is pretty constant price so you can't really take advantage of low prices by filling up the big tank to get you through the higher priced weeks. I started to get the dreaded misfire and replaced the injectors before it became a problem. I was shocked to see how much muck accumulated inside the the inlet manifold which can also restrict airflow, and so is yet another service issue. I did the work myself with a friend and it still cost me thousands in parts. A water pump and timing belt later regular fuel filter changes then combined with more regular servicing it was an expensive exercise

Now getting back in to the V6 it is so nice to have the smoothness of the V6, the extra power and the quietness. I forgot how much noise the diesel really makes until I got back in to the V6. So I have been back on the internet checking reliability threads to make sure I am making the right decision and the V6 just seems to be a super reliable motor, verging on legendary status in my view after so many years.

I have read all the arguments for and against diesel and petrol and decided that I am not likely to be stuck in a remote country town that only sells diesel and the whole water crossing argument is the least of my worries as I don't intend to cross water up to my windscreen. Besides, I would rather flood a petrol than a diesel as it will not seize.

So back to the smooth running and 202Kw. Also leaving the 120 camp and moving to the 150's thanks for the memories :-)

1GRFE V6 in one of our work Hilux's (2008 model) is about to have it 800,000k service, engine wise untouched- never had a rocker cover lifted and still running original radiator hoses - regular servicing and they just keep going, I firmly believe Toyota engines especially love fresh oil. Oh by the way this still uses no oil between services.

Xmas time drove my GX 120 V6 to Sydney and filled up down there for the return trip - it took 108 litres for 895 km so 12.1 l per 100k. @$1.06 per litre (With discount) and the return trip came back at 11.9 l per 100k

Ahh, this was the type of thread I was after!
Well, that's pretty much made my mind up, Ill be purchasing a V6 120 very shortly!!
I found one that looks in fantastic condition with 190k on it, so looks like it might be the go!

Now - off to the negotiating table I go.....

                          She still went like new.

                          Now thats the 3.4.

The 1grfe motors from the 120 series which I own now are more reliable, more powerful and more fuel efficient.
                          I can see them passing 400 000kms.

Keep the services up, change the oxygen sensors and air flow metre they will provide you many years of happy trouble free motoring.

the 1GRFE is pretty legendary now.

                          Hi All,

I know this is an old post, though a very interesting one at that.

The attached quote mentioned to change the oxy and maf sensors.

I am curious at what point would be a good time?, mine has about 200k on it and has been off road quite a bit.

                          Many thanks,

                          Nick

                              Hey Aussie TDM,
As a matter of interest, do you run 91, 95 or 98 RON petrol?

Interested in the claims by petrol companies about injectors clogging over time if you don't use their higher octane fuels that are "designed to clean". I figure that after 800,000 Kms you may have a view here.

Some good reading here.... I must say if I had my time over again with all the info at hand, would I make the same decision to buy Diesel ??? Not really sure these days.... Main reason for buying a Diesel at the time was Fuel Range when remote touring + towing. Towing is not that often, so I could have lived with a Petrol..... Remote Touring, that's the thing that interests me the most and why I want a car that can give me at least 1000kms + in remote touring. From the fuel figures I seen from Petrols, I probably could have lived with the petrol too in that area as well....
