Steve what year model did you get ? I've got a 2013 V6 GXL and I love it.

It will be interesting to see if you notice an improvement in fuel ecomony with the later model.

    Regards...Mick

          This article made me smile.

update from originally calling this a V6 they have edited the article and confirmed it was a V8.

Hi Eveyone, sold my FJcruiser and bought a 2003 Prado v6 auto for $9500.
1 owner(wife) fully serviced with books till 200,000 and std service but no log since(Bought may 2016)
BUT ...... 370,000 on the clock! And it runs brilliant and almost as good as the FJ(yes,i know, same car!)
After i bought it i asked seriously, what has been replaced on it,answer...... light globes!!!!!
Only issue since is starter motor went and slight toyota fault being dashboard cracked(not worth fixing)
Ive read this thread a few times and enjoy the feedback.Click image for larger version

                    Fuel

Hey just checking how much fuel did you burn while towing v normal highway driving without tow? thanks heaps (i was thinking diesel before the horror stories petrol all the way- i suppose thats why nissan is making patrol only petrol!!!)

First post from me as non-Prado owner :-)

I've had a loan of a 2003 120 series petrol with 345,000 kms on it to tow a van for these holidays. It's still very quiet and goes very well for a now 14 year old unit.

I'm impressed enough to look to either buying this one, or something around that vintage. Compared to towing a van with a 3.8L Commodore wagon, the Prado eats it up.

If I do get one it will be a petrol. Not sure the diesels are worth the trouble for a suburban vehicle that will tow 1 or 2 times a year, especially after reading about the issues with the early D4D's.

Very interesting forum - I've enjoyed reading up on the Prado.

Try and get a late 04 upwards with the 5 speed auto. Gives you better economy. If your on facebook they have a 120 page for prados as well

Cheers Steve - I will take this into consideration. Apart from the 5sp auto on the second generation 120's, are there any significant differences ?

Not really. They did change the rear cargo door hinge to stop them cracking but there were still a few later ones that cracked but no where near like the earlier models. They did change the exhaust manifolds to stop the exhaust flutter but they still did it just no where near as noisy. They did an upgrade again in late 07 when the gxl gained dual air standard, and hands free stereo (nothing to get super excited over). Then again in 08. Just check under rear cargo door rubber at the bottom for rust, very common. Easy to check just pull rubber out and check the metal frame at the bottom then it just simply pushes back on. Water runs down from the top and gets trapped at the bottom. If looking at a grande check around sunroof for rust on the actual glass panel it’s self not the roof of the vehicle

                                My V6 engine

Hi Nair, fuel consumption depends on many varied factors, environment, road conditions, tyre choice, vehicle loading, accessories fitted etc etc... I have a 2004 GXL 120 with most of the fruit fitted, and fairly empty of gear she weighs in at around 2.65 tonne. I did the Gibb River road trek a little while ago, fully loaded and about 100kg over the max GVM of 2.85 tonne (before all the nay-sayers comment, I was comfortable at that weight as I’d fitted heavy duty springs and bilstein shocks all round) My fuel consumption on the best day on the blacktop was around 16ltr per 100km, worst day off road was around 23ltr per 100km. I have a scanguage fitted, which shows real world fuel consumption figures for the previous day. My V6 has an exede chip fitted, pacemaker headers and 2 3/4 inch exhaust and the 5 speed auto upgraded. I bought her with 234,000kms on the clock, and she has approximately 364,700kms on it now. I have had to replace the starter motor and radiator in the distant past, and a minor oil leak from the rocker gasket needed fixing, and that’s it. I service it every 5,000kms.
