      Re: binding drivetrain????

A week a ago it happened nearly every time I stopped. Booked it into the dealer for last Friday. They suggesed doing the tail shaft fix sorted out this type of problem 90% of the time. It was OK when driving home on Friday but unfortunately did it several times over the weekend.

Rang today to book the in to have it looked at again. They would not book it in. Said I need to take workshop manager for a drive to demonstrate problem.

To me it feels like the auto is not letting go the gear and suddenly it lets go.

          binding drivetrain????

Not sure if this is similar but a few times I've noticed just after stopping a little clunk almost like the transmission is changing down to first gear even if I've been stopped for a few seconds. Assumed that's what it was and the car had come to a stop in second gear.

            Re: binding drivetrain????

This same behaviour exists with the LandCruiser 200 Series as well. Mine is a post July 2009 update model, and it exhibits the same symptoms as what's described on this thread.

Must be a Toyota thing, if it's present in the 120 Series, the 150 Series and the 200 Series....

The "fix" that the dealers will fob you off with is that the tailshaft needs to be greased.

day before yesterday they knew nothing about the thump.....went in yesterday with details from forum and they knew it all and the only fix they are entertaining is to grease it......well we will see how long it lasts...i can be real stubborn as the graesing they did yesterday did not fix the thump lol

                Re: binding drivetrain????

Could it be driveline backlash ? I had this on my 90 Series auto when new, fix is simple a good greasing on the tailshaft.

                cheers

That's a good suggestion and can be easily verified if this is what's happening. I can do some testing - each time I come to a complete stop I will manual select 1st gear before I take off. If this thumping goes away, then it's a transmission behaviour that is causing the thump sensation.

I will report back what I find, if it is conclusive.

                    Re: binding drivetrain????

Tonight I shifted the auto gearbox to 1st gear manually on my LC200 for every take off from complete standstill. Some of it was from red lights and some of it was just stop start traffic as I was leaving the city on my way home.

I was able to reproduce the drivetrain clunk a number of times, so I have now eliminated the gearbox as the source of the clunks.

The clunking is more obvious on an uphill start. Another way that I was able to reproduce the tailshaft clunk was if I have my left foot on the brake and my right foot on the accelerator with the revs up at 1200 RPM, to create some windup. When I taking my foot off the brake and step further on the accelerator pedal to take off, as if in a hurry, the clunk becomes more easily reproduced.

Mind you, this is LC200, so I don't know if the behaviour will be the same with an auto 150 Series.

                    EDIT:

I did some more testing today and am now slightly confused with the results, as it may not be as conclusive as I've mentioned above.

I found that I was still able to reproduce the clunk when manually selecting 1st gear on the auto, but the clunk symptoms would not occur as frequently, and the clunk sensation was softer, and not felt as strongly if the auto was left in "D". So more testing is required....

                      binding drivetrain????

I think mine is different. I only notice a slight clunk sometimes after coming to a stop. Not when taking off. Pretty sure it's just the transmission dropping back to first gear after stopping.

                      Cheers, Sam.

                        Re: binding drivetrain????

Guys whatever you think the issue is the main thing is that you can replicate the issue consistantly and then be confident you can do this with the dealer on a test drive. Of course the next step is convince the dealer that this is not normal ! I had a similar issue with my city car, Golf TD with DSG. Turned out I worked out that the "jerking" fault was only when the transmission was warm and on an incline. Once I could replicate the issue and the dealer agreed it was not normal, I was on first base. Then process for them to fix was simple in the end. Of course totally different cars here, but hopefully same process.

                        cheers

                          Re: binding drivetrain????

if you're getting the clunk on take off (especially on hills), you might find it is your brakes. i sometimes find the brakes kicking in when stopping momentarily and then climbing on the lip of the garage. i have also found this happens sometimes in general driving on take off. i figure the car must be wanting to engage hill assist or traction control.

on braking though... i do sometimes s**t myself when coming to a stop. it sounds and feels like someone's hit me (or i've hit something). based on this thread and the 120 forum, i'd have to say this is probably due to the tailshaft.

                            Re: binding drivetrain????

Well my D4D has started doing this as well, only occasionally at first and now almost every time I stop. I note that if you put the box in neutral just before stopping then select drive after stopping hey presto no clunk. I repeated this over and over and it definately does not do it when you follow that process. My spin on this is that the box is slecting first gear late either just after you stop or just after you release the brake to move forward. I can't see how greasing the shaft has anything to do with it and why does it appear now with 4k on the clock?

I wonder whether this only occurs on the D4D as most people reporting it here don't appear to have the V6.

These numerous faults (I also have the 2400RPM flat spot and 1500RPM vibration noise) are driving me nuts, really dissapointing from Toyota

Edit: After reading the "Thump noise when stopping (Tailshaft clunk)" thread under the 120 series as suggested earlier in this thread, it would seem conclusive that this is the same issue carried over from the last model. Rang my local service manager and he knew about it straight away and confirmed that it is a lack of grease on the spline. He reckons that at all Prado's will do it eventuually and that you just have to re-grease every 10k service. I have booked mine in this week to fix this and have the other issues looked at. I find it strange that Toyota have not tried to address this problem with the 150 series after all the issues raised in the 120. Although further reading and talking to a friend with a Landrover it would appear that this issue is not uncommon on other 4WD's.

Not unusual, my previous ISUZU (Holden) Monterey had to have the spline greased every 10-15K, but had a grease nipple to facilitate this, does the D4D had a grease nipple for this ??

                              That's why I have a grease gun....Rgds, Rob
