  • And today I learned ..... *3rd Row Seats*

It should probably read "What made me feel stupid today?"....

So my Prado is very 2nd hand and when I bought it from the used car lot I got A owner's manual ... not THE owner's manual, so I had NO information on the 3rd row seats ... in addition to this, the service book I bought from Supercheap doesn't even mention the seats. Oh well, who needs instructions anyway ... right?

So having looked over the seats locked in place and raised to the side, removing hinge covers and tugging and pulling at various things .... on the car, I read the few threads on 3rd row seat removal and still couldn't figure the damned things out. So I got home from work a little earlier this afternoon and said to myself "Self, let's unbolt them 3rd row seats". So as I was unhooking them from the 'Jesus Bar' i notice a little tab/lever that I hadn't noticed previously, gave it a pull and heard an audible click where the hinge is. Yay! me thinks, lowered the sead 95% of the way down, pull the lever again and remembered one of the threads saying 'push forward' (I swear it was in the voice of Obi Wan). Low and behold, the seat came out! only took over a month of head scratching and procrastination.

The feeling of stupidity didn't end there! When I bought the car they spent a day locating the second row seat headrests the went walk about whilst the vehicle was being detailed and they told me the 3rd row seat headrests never came with the car .. no biggy. So I am lifting the first seat out to put on my work bench when I hear a ripping sound .... SHIIIIIIIIIT! But noticed it was velcro. I don't know why, thinking it was to remove the seat cover for cleaning I still continued to open the flap on the back of the seat (velcro strip and two zippers) and what do you think I found .. well of course YOU know .. the 3rd row headrest stowed neatly IN the seat.

Well I am chuffed. Seats removed and complete! Just in time for the missus to get home to go do groceries

    Confused Fool.

Stupid.....let me tell you about stupid.

I was fitting a dishwasher so removed the s bend under the sink. It had dirty water in it. So I tipped in down the sink. It started to poor out where the S bend used to be.

So quickly I shoved the S bend under and caught some of it.

Pulled the S bend out again. It had dirty water in it - again. So I tipped it down the sink - again.......well you get the picture

Is my pain and simplicity that amusing?

I figure they can stay out till the rig is stolen, crashed, lost, burnt, sold, traded or otherwise disposed of. However, if I do put them in and tear out what little hair I have left (please note I shave my head so the pulling of hair will be extra painful!), I won't be posting the failure here.

I did the exact same thing last night fixing a leaking pipe. Pulled the pipe out and thought I'd give it a rinse ... FAIL

Please please slow down I'm still getting up off the floor over the rear seat removal skit with the headrest addendum & you've now thrown in the rear cup holders! Next it will be the jack & tool bag thingy, locating the key for the wheel cover or as happened to me recently, finally finding the key to release the Toyota nut lock on the spare....

                  Well I won't have to worry about any of that .... i think;

                  a) 2000 RV, don't think it has the 2nd row cup holders (bracing to be corrected and add another installment to the story, "DUH, there it is!"),
                  b) The Jack and Tool roll made itself known to me on the first test drive before I'd even looked for it when I cornered and it flew across the back and scared seven very colourful shades of sh%t out of me (it hadn't been secured in it's hold and the cover had just been placed on and not locked),
                  c) I didn't get a locking wheel cover with it (so wouldn't have thought to search for a key! Should I be looking for that in the fuse housing under the hood or in the exhaust manifold or somewhere equally as obvious? I only have a viynl cover from Supercheap on the spare,
                  d) Don't have the lock nut on the spare wheel either. The spare is currently held on by only the 2 top nuts (one I have added a key lock to from Repco that covers the nut completely) and the 3rd thread on the wheel carrier is BIGGER then the other 2. Don't know if someone welded a new bolt to the wheel carrier or if the lock nut that is MEANT to be there is for a larger thread ... would it be stupid of me to ask??? ops: Wasn't game to ask the guy at Toyota when I went to pick up a new interior like cover for fear of him telling me that it is a special, proprietary thread, only known to Toyota and a suitable nut would be $100 ... $1,000 for the locking variety and $10,000 to get it keyed-alike for the car keys.

I removed mine by unbolting the 14mm nut/bolt on each side for 3 years before i realised they had the quick release handle thingy......

Yep this is much like the one I have except that you use the ignition key to undo it.....I'm assuming its standard fitment, but then again there I go assuming again ops:

Wazza, the 3rd row seats are only 'quick release' from a certain age....When the 2nd row seats where also split I think.....

Interesting point....I just had a look through my trusty Gregory's workshop manual (Prado petrol engine '96-'02) & it only shows the split 2nd row seats but does refer to the "hinge & leg locks" for 3rd row so I don't know for sure if it's the same quick release on the earlier models with single 2nd row seat. Maybe someone can check on this..... :?:

And Rogue Aussie have you found the rear cup holders yet........I'm patiently waiting for your reply

ok stormy, I give up. please enlighten me as to the hiding place for the wheel cover key. I couldn't find one for mine and went to a locksmith and got one cut for it. luckily I realised I didn't have/couldn't find a key before I needed it with a flat tyre!!!! it was only a week or 2 after getting the key I got a flat.
