  • Fuel Consumption on 3 Door versions

    Hi everyone,
I am interested in your feedback please regarding fuel economy on the swb models.
I have had my SX three weeks now and the economy has settled in at 7.0l around town and 6.6l on the highway not towing and cooler on 50% of time - is anyone else achieving these figures? On the face of it they seem very good and I wasn't expecting them that good when I first got the car.
Are they likely to get even better as the engine breaks in some more? I have now done 2800km and this is my first diesel so it's new to me.
Also are these computer displays very accurate I haven't had one before either and I thought even allowing say 5% it is still a really good figure?
I noticed in the book it states when the 'fuel warning light' comes on there is 13 litres left in the tank so in my case it seems like I would still have enough for 150km at least.

Many thanks I look forward to your feedback.

    Is that a manual?

I am getting good figures but not that good. I usually get low 8's on the highway and high 9's to low 10's around town.
    Thanks,

I believe that the SX and ZR are only available in diesel automatic.

Thank you Walker for your feedback what sort of mileage has your's done?
        Mine is an automatic.
At this stage in OZ they are only Auto and Diesel as Bassett mentioned.

I just filled mine up, and with 40%city60% highway the computer showed 7.6l/100km (this is with <1k on the clock, as it is a brand newy), when I calculated it from km's travelled to litres put in, I get 7.8l/100, so the computer is pretty accurate.

            cheers,

Hey Simon thank you for the feedback sounds like you are already achieving good economy that's great - I see you went ahead with the SX way to go I remember your post from the 'Couldn't be happier' thread.

Hello again thank you for your comments so far - I have an Update if anyone is interested.
I went for a run up to Cooktown last week from Cairns a 700km roundtrip it is now fully sealed and 110 in sections so I sat on 120 - 130 some of the way, it was a VERY windy day unfortunately, so I noticed my highway consumption became 9.2 to 9.8 at these speeds on the display - what I did notice on the trip back however was when I settled in at 95km per hour for a while that it dropped right back to 7.1l on the display and when I got back to Cairns the 'average since refuel' indicated 8.5l ( I filled up when I left ) so all in all I was still happy with the economy. Looks like one can achieve the claimed Toyota highway figure of around 7.1l per hundred if we stay under 100 but over 100 and things change rapidly.
I realize now why I achieved such good fuel economy ( 6.2l ) on my first trip out of town down to Mission Beach a month earlier-I only drove at around 90 to 95 because of caravans, traffic, roadworks etc...

Re: Fuel Consumption on 3 Door versions

Hi Rick, yes, very happy with the SX. I read your comments about speed and fuel economy with interest, I'll keep an eye on mine as most of my highway driving has been in the 90-110km , from Brisbane up to Noosa or Scarborough.
I'll be heading out to Roma in the next month or two, where speeds tend to be a bit higher, so will see how the fuel economy goes.

                  cheers,
                  Simon

Annoyingly for me, the very best I can get out of my fuel economy is about 10L / 100 kms and this is really pussyfooting it .. I do quite a lot of motorway driving and little stop start type driving... Toyota keep telling me that there are no error codes on the computer and that's it !! 25000ks on the clock now too ... Interestingly I noticed quite an improvement in power when I had my safari snorkel installed ... Work that one out ??

That makes sense. The snorkel would act like a cold air intake and could increase power.

I have now done more than 20,000km and my economy is getting worse. Where I used to get mid 8's on highway trips I now get mid 10's. I can only put this down to the bulbar and 2" lift. Around town hasn't changed much going from mid 10's to 11.
                      Thanks,

Re: Fuel Consumption on 3 Door versions

Sadly, the ADR fuel figure is only achievable in unmodified form. Once you add extra accessories such as replacing the tires with A/T, fitting a bull bar or a suspension lift, you will immediately notice an increase in fuel consumption.

Re: Fuel Consumption on 3 Door versions

My fuel economy went out the window as soon as I put the muddies on, it is still not that bad with about 9.5l/100 on the highway, and 12.5 around town.

Noticed a nice increase in power with the snorkel but no real economy gains, maybe as I had the bar fitted at the same time.

Re: Fuel Consumption on 3 Door versions

I have 8k on the clock now, had added an ARB Safari bar and BFG LT265/65r17 tyres and just used a full tank of around town (Brisbane) driving and got 9.1l/100 (my calculation from litres used and klm travelled). I forgot to check the in car average before refuelling, but it was around 8.8 or something, so the in car computer always shows a better consumption that what you actually get.

I am happy with that consumption, on the highway is where the diesel really shines, as I get low 8l/100. Off road low range the consumption goes up, as you would expect.
The vehicle is a gem though, no problems and very happy with my choice

Just got back from a 15 week trip covering 9150 Klms most of which was towing a 14 foot Jayco Pop-Top caravan (about 1900 kgs).
Average fuel consumption was 13.5 ltrs per 100 Klms.
