  • Sam's 150 V6

Hi all, the mods might not happen as quickly as some of the other build ups on here but I thought I'd get some photos in from the start to kick things off.

Looking forward to adding bits and pieces over time turning the Prado into a good touring vehicle capable of some weekend fun on the tracks as well.

Factory options I went for were
    1. The cargo barrier (although it needs to be refitted at the first service) see here for details viewtopic.php?f=45&t=9175
    2. Towbar (looks aside, I reckon it'll provide great protection for the rear bumper off road)
    3. Redarc Brake Controller
    4. As well as the obligatory rubber mats (including cargo area)

    Redarc Brake Controller fitting

Since then, I have added Rhino Sportz cross bars which I will attach my Rhino Platform Rack to. I pinched this from my Pajero before I traded it. A great low profile rack!

I've also had BFG AT's in 275/65/R17 added which look great and are really quiet. Highly recommend Nathan at Jax Quickfit in Caulfield South. Great price and easy to deal with. Oh and the free Black Max Compressor promo BFG has at the moment is great too. Received mine yesterday.

    BFG AT 275/65/R17

My first bit of DIY on the new Prado was to install a dual battery system. I grabbed a aux battery tray from Derek at ABR and a Redarc isolator. Mounting the battery tray was very straight forward with the instructions from Derek. Re the mounting of the isolator, there are two captive nuts in the engine bay (drivers side) near the wheel arch that are the perfect distance apart for matching the mounting holes on the isolator. You need to mount it on a diagonal but is much easier than having to drill new holes.

    Redarc isolator mounting

    Aux Battery (Supercharge Allrounder)

Modified power steering and aircon bracket

Unfortunately my 75ah Exide Extreme battery didn't fit (slightly too long) in the space so I had to settle with a Supercharge Allrounder 60ah which fits with space to spare. The Exide will now go into our camper as a second battery for that.

Next DIY mod will be to install my GME TX 3440 and aerial and then an Anderson plug (probably ABR kit) to the rear for charging our camper batteries.

    Future mods wish list includes:

    1. Polyair Bags
    2. Bullbar
    3. Two inch lift
    4. Snorkel
    5. Window Tint

Just need to put some $$$ in the piggy bank first

    Cheers, Sam.

Looks good! I like the RedArc brake controller, beats the other style boxes so this will be what I go for when I finally upgrade my camper trailer from Overrider style brakes to electric.

My polyairs are being installed tomorrow and that will be me for a while, the minister has spoken.

Would love to see some pics of where you mount the valves for these. Also the routing of the airlines if possible. If you don' mind me asking, what have you been quoted?

      Cheers, Sam.

Easy done, I will take some on Saturday along with the under body guards for you. I am paying $385.00 supplied and installed, mates rates... I plan to have the airlines mounted on the towbar bracket just above our anderson plug.

Will post some pics for you in my rig build on Saturday.

        Cheers Daniel

          Re: Sam's 150 V6

Fitted my TX 3420 on the weekend. There is an existing bracket up under the dash on the drivers side (passenger side of steering column). The bracket has an M8 captive nut in it so I presume its for one of the VX/Kakadu features that's not on the GXL.

I cut a small piece of steel about the same size as the TX 3420 box and bolted it to the bracket mentioned above. I then sat the unit on some foam tape (to prevent rattles) and then cable tied it nice and tight. Its a good spot as it allows easy access to the coax and power plugs and with the speaker facing down towards the drivers footwell, the sound is great. You will need the extension cable for the handset though (it comes in the GME box)

From there, I just rant the coax and power cables out through the rubber grommet on the drivers side to my aux battery and I mounted the aerial bracket on the drivers side bonnet. To prevent the GME Z bracket rubbing against the bonnet, I stuck a small piece of transparent gaffa tape over the lip. It's ultra durable and sticky and is barely visible. Available from Bunnings.

          Cheers, Sam.

I'll take the panel off and get a few photos on the weekend Dan. Definitely a tidy spot to put it.

If you take the panel above the pedals off and lie on you back looking up, theres a thin bracket about 20cm long on the right (if you're on your back) of the steering column. You can't miss it!

In the bottom end of it is a captive nut. Pretty sure it's an M8. I just got a bit of thin steel, drilled an 8mm hole in the center, laid it on top of the bracket and bolted the two together. This makes a good platform for the UHF head unit to sit on.

              Cheers, Sam.

Got around to putting my Rhino Platform rack (from previous car) on the Prado. I reckon they're a great rack. Low profile so no need to remove it for the garage or underground carparks, and strong. We used it in the Outback for 4 weeks last year with a spare tyre and wheel, tent and jerrys on it over some severe corrugations and it didn't miss a beat.

                Cheers, Sam.

Here's a few pics of the location of my GME TX 3420.

Location under dash. I bolted the galv bracket to the existing thin bracket which has a captive nut in the end of it.

I then ran the mic extension cord out beside the left hand kick panel and bunched the excess in the empty space behind it.

                    Cheers, Sam.

                      Re: Sam's 150 V6

I also removed the spare wheel cover and the bracket behind the spare that the cover clips into. Looks much better now I think.

                      5 minute job.

You just need to undo the 4 small bolts and remove the plastic 'locating clip' at the bottom right hand corner of the camera bracket. Then it just pulls off.

I then put the 4 bolts and plastic clip back in and put the tyre back on.

I then managed to find a matching bolt to go in where the one that holds the cover on goes (it's too long to fit back in without the cover).

                      Voila!

                      Cheers, Sam.

                            Re: Sam's 150 V6

Finally got around to knocking up a false floor to attach our fridge slide to in preparation for our Eyre Peninsula trip in September.

I made the floor out of ply and covered it with an indoor/outdoor carpet from Clark Rubber. the shape was easy enough as I could just trace the Toyota factory rubber mat. Unfortunately the 900 x 1200 piece of ply I bought wasn't quite wide enough at the fery rear, hence the small gaps. Still looks pretty good though.

I secured it to the floor using the existing captive nuts that hold the tie down hooks in and longer M6 bolts and large washers.

I then screwed the fridge slide in place using some 15mm screws.

Came up really well and is very secure.

I'll leave the fridge slide attached to the floor and pull the whole lot out as one when not in use. Then it's just a 5 minute job to pop it back in for trips.

                            Cheers, Sam.
