Na just use the same seal but put the grey gooey stuff around the lip of the metal first then stick the seal back in place. Dont use the black stuff like on the windscreens you will never get the shit off if you needed to......Both my 90's rear seals had this grey crap on them stopped shit getting in behind the rubber. Not sure why they havnt used it on the 120's, not sure wht the set up is of the 150's ??? Cheers Steve

Thanks Steve, . Let us know if you find out what the grey gooey stuff is and where to buy it. Sounds like the best option.

bugger,,,mine is loaded with rust...wonder how many of the thousands of prado on the road have the same problem..

I noticed that up the side of the seal is perfect with that black goey stuff doinfg its job...the whole bottom section of the seal is another story,,,sealant mixed with red dust, beach sand & water...

Only problem Roo with using that sikaflex 252, is it as bad as the sikaflex they use around the windscreens ?? other wise if the rubber needs to be removed at some stage either for a clean or just a regular check (as I have done with previous vehicles ) then it will be a prick to remove wouldn't it ?? Or is the 252 a different story ?? I know there a few different numbers/prefix's which determine their use.. I rang Toyota this morning but he has to chase up what the gooey stuff is that is used on the 90's. Both my 90's were genuine and original and both had this stuff under the rubber where as my 120 doesnt, obviously like every one else, why Toyota didnt use it to stop the shit and water getting trapped I dont know ?? Maybe cost cutting a few $$$ here and there... Cheers Steve

              Hi all,

I just checked my seal on my 2008 model, no rust just some dirt. Their is also a smear of some black greasy
stuff but only on the metal lip.

A check of the warranty info shows surface rust is covered by the warranty and rust perforation for 5 years
not sure how long the surface rust cover is for.

Those with warranties should try a claim through Toyota.

              Cheers

I check mine pretty regurlarly, no sign of any rust. Keeping it clean I think is the key, dust will hold moisture and then rust is inevitable.

                Cheers Andrew

Just checked mine and no sign of any rust (2008 GXL Sep. build).
I fitted a Couplertech system just after taking delivery.
It would be interesting to see if anybody who has the rust problem also have anti-rust protection.

Parked mine on quite a steep uphill driveway other day, 10mins later I noticed water dripping out from under rear bumper. Traced it back and looked like was coming from around the rear door area, openned door, couldn't see anything, pulled the seal, full of water and it just kept coming, and some surface rust starting Bugga!! Haven't had a chance to have a good look since, but I guess water is pooling between seal and roof, leaking under seal, then running inside the seal down.

Looks like another job to do instead of installing accessories, think my garage must have more accessoeries than most Prados!! (not the ones on here)

                          next morning

i let the penetron bite in overnite ,, cleaned it up with a small brass wire brush,
generous clean up with grease and wax remover ,masked off

three thick coats of duragal silver spray.

. cleaned the rubber up with hot soapy water and the toothbrush

applied silastic to all the trim clip holes,

used vaso on the underside of the rear seal and re assembled..

if i find the rear seal starts to lift i'll stick it back on but went with the vaso first.. i'll keep a eye on it..

                          cheers butane

                            Did similar to Butane8
Scraped of flaking rust & cleaned.
                            1) Converted with Wattyl Killrust Step one Rust Eater.
                            2) Step Two Heavy Duty Primer x2.
                            3) Step Three Top Coat x 2.

                            Then....

Found where water was leaking in by stuffing some paper towel under door seal closing door and spraying water everywhere. (Towel came up wet around lower right side of door seal) Water was getting in outside edge and running down to the inside channel of bottom of seal where it just sat creating a perfect rust environment.

Choices were $350 New Boot Seal with no promises it would fix the problem or silicone the existing seal.

Ran a thin line/bead of Sikaflex 221 along underneath outside edge top and sides leaving bottom unglued for inspection.
Problem solved. Not a drop of water getting in now.

I thought it would be wise to leave the bottom edge unglued so I can inspect it from time to time.

Gidday Butane. I wouldn't use Vaso on rubber as it will cause it to swell and eventually deteriorate and not seal anymore. If you're looking for a good, neutral product to keep the water out, use something like Bostik windscreen sealer. It does a very good job, and cleans up completely with kero (or diesel at a pinch) and won't harm anything.

I avoid mastic-style stuff, mainly because it's a bastard to work with. You end up with spider webs of the stuff all over your paintwork, and it's like working with soft chewing gum..... Sticks everywhere but in the place you want it to go...
