Re: Water and Possible Rust Behind Boot Seal

Don't know if this is the same problem as above but today I found that the floor inside the back door is damp for about 6inches in, right across. I have taken the grey strip off and the screws out and lifted the carpet and padding as it is quite damp. It is being aired now BUT where does this get in?? Is it coming up or running round and down. Or are the roof bars that the car comes with standard leaking and the water is coming from the top?? Anyone know??
    Regards, Brian.

Brain, I would start with the wife and the water hose. You and a brew and park yourself in the back and see if anything come out. I would pull the carpet to see if you can find the flow. Work your way down from the top to the bottom.

I had the same problem. The water was getting in around the back of the door seal and then leaking out into the carpet at the bottom. The water was channelled around the lip that the seal sits on until it found an outlet in the carpet.

This was fixed with a new replacement seal and has not occured to me since.

Re: Water and Possible Rust Behind Boot Seal

Just wondering if anyone has noticed that they get water gethering behind the seal for the boot door. I happened to pull the seal of a bit the other day down the bottom right hand side and found a fair bit of water sitting on the panel joints and it was rusty looking. The red could be from dust colouring the water or a bit of rust.
Running some cables today I pulled the seal back a bit and Holey Cow; what a lot of water and moist red dust behind the seal. No rust thankfully.

The seal just pulls off very easily, do yourself a favour and do a regular clean/check.

Re: Water and Possible Rust Behind Boot Seal

is this seal a common item Clark rubber or someone might have or does it need to be bought from Toyota for a left kidney? Mine has a tear in it at the bottom centre (has since or soon after I bought the car) I'd like to get it replaced.

I'll check it for water anyway - if anyone's likely to have a leak in there it's me..

Re: Water and Possible Rust Behind Boot Seal

I did a check of mine and found red dust mixed in with some greasy stuff. Haven't cleaned it out properly to see if there is rust or not. If I do find any, can someone give me a quick rundown on how to treat it?

Also need to know what sealant/grease to reapply to the seal to stop water accumulating (not that I noticed any water when I pulled the seal off).

I thought I might check out my problem here for the first time and it seems I am not the only one. I would expect most people don't pull the rubber boot seal off and this problem could be more wide spread.

When I bought my prado a few years ago I pulled the rubber seal off and noticed heaps of moisture along the bottom with developing surface rust. There was a brown/red greasy substance in the seal channel that was also full of moisture. My friend suggested leaving it alone because it was most likely a rust preventative. I however ignored his advice and cleaned it up. It was so wet and dirty I couldn't see how it could be helping.

Since then I have had to continually clean and apply rust preventative. I have tried WD40, fish oil, and even tried, re-priming, painting and applying Tectyl but the rust still returns. Moisture just sits in the boot seal groove and goes to work creating the perfect environment for rust. Just now treated with rust converter then a generous coat of Tectyl 506. There was flaking rust all along as before.

I would like to know what the brown substance was that was originally used (same color as Tectyl), but would really like to know why or how water gets in there in the first place. The seal is unbroken and fits well. I can't figure out what the problem is.

Not sure that a new $350 seal would solve the problem. I have thought about pumping a tube of silicone inside and around the seal, but thought that might be a bit drastic and wouldn't be able to check and see if it was working without breaking the seal.

                          Any suggestions.

get all rust out, dry it out for few days or heat lamp till its dry, new seal and sikaflex it then leave it. thats what i'd do.

Normally if the roof rails are leaking (which they did on some of the earlier models) your roof lining would be water marked so you would know anyway. Some were not sealed properly from the factory and required the rails need to be removed and new seals put in where the bolts go down. Yes I have pulled the rear rubber away from the channel and have seen exactly the same thing. There a shit seal I think compared to both my 90's. I need to pull my finger out and clean my'n up as well. Definately a spot for rust down the track if not kept dry and clean, maybe a spray of fishoil around it ?? Problem is then the bloody dust will stick to it more then likely ??? I might see if I can find out what the grey gooey stuff is that was used on the 90's rear door seal from the factory by Toyota, Cheers steve

Are you saying you would buy a new rubber seal for then silaflex it on? Worth a try, but $350 for a new seal seems a bit rich. I guess if it solves the problem it would be well worth it.
