  • Water and Possible Rust Behind Boot Seal

I have just removed the Rear Door Seal from my 2005 GXL (cleaning out the red dust).
This is the first time this seal has been removed and there was dust collected inside the seal but only from window level up, the dust does not leak into the car,
no water either,I was surprised at how easy it was to get the seal off.
The problem is I have found several small areas of rust along the edge of the spotwelded flange that the seal fits onto, this is only along the bottom edge.
I will trot along to Toyota on Monday to have them look at it, and will post the results.

          Re: Rear Door Seal

          Dear Bob,
Found the same problem just being nosey as I thought most 4wd owners should be around their vehicles, but hey we have to know how they work. Sounds like this problem isn't common by the lack of response. Ours is an '03 model bought second hand 18 months ago. Noticed not long after purchased, sprayed the seals inside with lanolin, garaged ever since, have kept an eye on it, and noticed no change. Just wondering how you went with Toyota?

Local Toyota has looked at the rust and their Panel Beater has submitted a report.
I sent them some photos, they have forwarded the info to Toyota so I am waiting on a call back from Dealer.
            Cheers

            Bob.

Mods --feel free to delete or modify this post if it is not right.
I have emailed Toyota and sent them these and some other photos as they, acting on the advice of the Warranty and Service Administrator at my local Dealer have knocked back my initial claim, they tell me that it is Surface Rust and as the car is out of warranty ( 3 years and 9 months old ) it is not covered.
I think that the rust would have been there for longer than 9 months, so I will have to wait and see what they say to this plea.

I though there was a 5 year corrosion warranty?

                  Re: Rear Door Seal

a smear of grease around the seals ensures this does'nt happen.

The warranty is 3 years for Surface Rust and 5 years for Rust Perforation.

There is a cursory coating of some sort of gloop but it obviously has not done a very good job, besides I do not generally pull seals off the car to check if the paint underneath is too thin to resist a bit of moisture.
It will be sealed properly when this rust problem has been fixed, and I guess I will need to check a bit further to make sure there is not a bigger problem.

                      Re: Rear Door Seal

or a bit of Lanolin around the seals is a possible preventative measure you could take.

                        Re: Rear Door Seal

Just bumping this one to the top.
Over the last couple of months I have sent Three emails to "Toyota Experience" regarding the rust under the RDS on my Prado and I have not received any acknowledgement at all.
I will now go ahead and treat and paint it myself, as it is under the Seal and out of sight I will wire brush it, Killrust it and then brush paint it.
As the vehicle is not yet Four years old and the closest it has been to Seawater is Redcliffe Parade it might be prudent for others to check this spot.
                        Cheers

Water and Possible Rust Behind Boot Seal

Just wondering if anyone has noticed that they get water gethering behind the seal for the boot door. I happened to pull the seal of a bit the other day down the bottom right hand side and found a fair bit of water sitting on the panel joints and it was rusty looking. The red could be from dust colouring the water or a bit of rust.

I will try and get some photos if it makes it easier to see were I mean.

                          Thanks,

                          Nathan

Re: Water and Possible Rust Behind Boot Seal

Yes, I noticed similar when I pulled the rear door seal off the other day to remove an internal side panel, I noticed it was quite wet where the seal goes over the metal lip.
Wasn't rusting yet, but a prime environment for rust to start.
It is a double metal skin there too, so conceivably water could go into the gap.
I don't know what to do about it other than to pull the seals off every few months and spray with WD 40 or something. ( not sure what effect that would have on the rubber.)
                            Cheers, Wayne
