Fellas I have been surfing for 30 years and have always just stashed my key on my car somewhere but yes some places you don't want to be seen doing it.

In those places I use this, it is sensational and the answer to your needs...

We use the key locker a lot when leaving car at airport where different driver will pick it up. The fob doesnt fit too well so we remove mechanical key and lock car with that and pit it in locker. Locker hooks through tie down point and then sits nicely on top of bash plate out of site.

You could get a baby nappy and nappy bag, put the key in the nappy and put it in the nappy bag on your towel. Not many people are going to go through a potentially dirty nappy to see if there is a key in there...

        OR

Just do like Toyota designed for just such an occasion and take key out of the fob, chuck the fob in the car, lock the car with the key easy peasy no cost no fuss. Sure, if someone smashes the window and uses the fob they MAY be able to start the car and steal it but hey that's what insurance is for

Not that I have tried - but I would have thought that the car will unlock when the door handle is pulled with the keyfob inside the car as it does from outside?

Or does manually locking with a key prevent that?

Manually locking the car stops the auto handle opening working. You need to use the key to unlock the door to gain entry.

and if the fob is in the vehicle and you are outside, it will not unlock for you. It has enough sensors to know where the fob is.
Back to surfing. If you do not want to lock the fob in and take the little key, take the fob surfing. Don't know if this works but mine went through the wash last week and is working fine.

Sorry that is what I meant, fob inside and lock with the key and the auto unlock buttons don't work.

Have you tried wrapping the fob with al foil to create a faraday cage? Might not work but worth a try.

As this is my first post I hope this hasn't already been covered, To turn off smart start as in keyless entry enter the menu system via the folder button on the right of the steering wheel to do this.
1,place the gear lever in park or neutral.
                    2, start the car.
3, push and hold the folder button.
Then scroll down to smart start press the enter button and select either on /off.

with this done the electronic key fog doesnt work to start the car until the door has been locked and unlocked, at one stage I thought my prado was going to stay on the driveway until monday for the Toyota dealer to fix because I could not start it or turn the ignition on but then I locked it with the key and then unlocked it.

                    Hope this helps.

P.S there is all so some other adjustments in the menu system.
The GXL/GX doesn't have the menu button which will discount this option for most Prado owners.
