  • How do I surf with this key???

Guys, part of the reason for buying my Prado (which I'm due to pick up from the dealer hopefully on Sunday) is to go surfing in out of the way places... the other part is I can pack it full of boards for my local beaches...

Anyway, with my current car, I have a fobless key that I lock the door with, I then carry this key in the water with me (in my legrope pocket) and I leave the key with the remote and immobiliser chip in the car hidden... (I know, I know, insurance etc. but what else can I do?).

It seems to me that with this new Toyota keyless entry system, if I leave the main key in the car the doors will remain unlocked!!!

Help - I need to surf...!!!

    Any solutions??

Id love to know the answer to this one two. I was hoping that when you remove the key from the remote, it would disable the remote, so you could leave it in the car and lock the car and keep the key in your pocket whilst surfing, but no such luck.

Ive been mulling over this one for a while, really you need to find somewhere you can lock the remote that is away from the car, or find a way to disable the remote so it can be left in the car and the car locked with the key.

Store the key in a waterproof pouch and take the pouch with you.

Pouch is a problem because they are uncomfortable under a wetsuit and we wear boardshorts for half the year in Sydney (and then where do you put it??).

This is a surprisingly serious problem for surfers...

Theres a giant padlock thing that connects to the towbar/recovery point with a keypad code lock on it, but the issue is that remote still leaves the car unlocked!!

i'd try taking the key out of the fob, leaving the fob in the car and using the key to lock it. not sure if this will work - will have to wait till the car comes home tonight to try it.

Nope, doesnt work, as per my previous comment, i was hoping removing the key will disable to the remote/fob but no such luck.

Apparently there are several re-programming options the dealer has ability to do.
There may be a way to get them to partially or totally disable the keyless entry. Then you could leave the fob part in the car. i'm presuming you wil still need it there to deactivate the immobiliser part.

But don't all you surfers have blonde babes who sit on the beach and mind your keys ?

ooorrrrrrr.... supplementary idea to my one above .....

check if the the fob for keyless entry uses a battery. if so, take it out, that should disable the transmitter for your keyless entry ( forcing you to use the mechanical key ) but the immobiliser deactivation part should still work, as that is normally passive. ( don't need batteries )

when not surfing just use your spare key/fob ( or put the battery back in )

I'm assuming ther keyless entry is not a passive system, but if it is then it's probably totally sealed/encapsulated anyway so water shouldn't be a problem .
                    Cheers, Wayne

Re: How do I surf with this key???

mmm that key safe in your board would cause some serious weakening, given that I snap a board every couple of years anyway. At a guess that would make my board snap every time I surfed a beachbreak on a solid 6 foot plus day. That would work great in my longboard though... just not in my 6'3" shortboard or 6'8" gun.

but that http://www.waterproofpouches.com/prod_k600.html thing seems to be the go - so you may be onto something there! Thanks!

Re: How do I surf with this key???

Remove the key from the fob and lock it inside the car using the key to lock the door. Now place the key wherever you want. If the fob is inside when you lock the car it will not allow the keyless option to unlock the door.

You could then put the key in a tow bar safe or in a waterproof pouch etc.

Tried it tonight and it works.

Re: How do I surf with this key???

I had a late model Audi and they supply a plastic door key that when you leave the electronic key inside you could lock the car via the plastic key and put it on the loop that most boardies have in the pocket. Maybe the Toyota key would allow this as well.

If that fails I think the option of the hot chickee babe on the beach is probably better.

                              Hi

As this is my first post I hope this hasn't already been covered, To turn off smart start as in keyless entry enter the menu system via the folder button on the right of the steering wheel to do this.
1,place the gear lever in park or neutral.
                              2, start the car.
3, push and hold the folder button.
Then scroll down to smart start press the enter button and select either on /off.

with this done the electronic key fog doesnt work to start the car until the door has been locked and unlocked, at one stage I thought my prado was going to stay on the driveway until monday for the Toyota dealer to fix because I could not start it or turn the ignition on but then I locked it with the key and then unlocked it.

                              Hope this helps.

P.S there is all so some other adjustments in the menu system.
