Very good first post :!: . Just read the manual, you do need the fob to start the car. I thought there was a keyhole somewhere for the key in case of flat battery, but no.
Fob will work with allmost dead battery if you hold it against the starter button.
Love this website, full of great stuff :!:
By mistake last week, I left my key (keyless entry car) in back pocket....
I went spearfishing for 4 hours... max depth was around 20 metres....
Coming back to the car, I was looking for the key, on the right wheel as usual....
No key... OMG!!!
Finaly tried to open the car by touching the handle... it worked...
When I sat down to taken off my weight belt, I felt the key...
Since I have been using it, and it works perfectly
Sorry mate, my bad. What your saying is true. The FOB actually does start the car, without the mini key, I just tested it. I've got my car booked in for a service next week. I'll ask the dealer for their thoughts.
How did you test it without using the key to gain access to the car?
I just pulled the mini key out of the fob, left the fob in the car and took the mini key with me. After I locked the car using the mini key, it wouldn't open on any of the proximity handles, but instead would only open with the key. In addition i also use a club lock (to which I either can hide the key or take it with me). But I'm not seeing the problem with using my method of taking the key out of the fob and locking the car with the mini key?

I remove the key from the fob, and lock the fob in the car. In addition to this I attached a club lock to my steering wheel and then take the small key and the lock key with me... Not ideal, but it works fine!

wrap the proximity key in Foil (several layers), place it in the car and lock the car with the emergency key removed from main key body.
Take emergency key with you, and unlock the car when you return, unwrap proximity key and your off...

Hi folks,
Went surfing this morning, and bingo.....I have a solution that works well for me.
Remove the little key from the proximity fob. Open the bonnett and pretend to check the engine oil on the dipstick or whatever, and secretly place the proximity fob somewhere in the engine bay (where it is out of "radio" contact (or whatever signal it uses) with the car. Close the bonnett, lock the car (and lock the glove box if you want to put your sunglasses etc somewhere slightly more secure) using the little key in the drivers door handle, and now put the little key in your leg rope key pouch and ....surf away...
Also try and park the car in a spot that makes it a little harder to tow away..several Prados have been stolen by being towed away.
If someone breaks the window glass to get in, they can't start the car...unless they also open the bonnett and search for the proximity fob for the next hour or so.....there are so many noocks in there to hide the fob....
To make it even more secure I am considering bolting a small key locker in the engine bay ....don't tell anyone...
Surfs up

Hide the remote module far from the start button inside the car.
You should not be able to start the engine. Message key not detected is displayed.
Take the metal key component with you and use it to lockup.
Hey mate,
leave your 2nd (spare) set of keys in glove box /hidden somewhere inside car, seperate your everyday key, leave the remote part of your keys inside the car (hidden) and now you should be able to use your regular metal key to lock/unlock as needed!
*your rear door lock/unlock buttons will also be disabled by having the keys locked inside, so dont need to worry about that.
I sometimes separate the electronic component and hide it in the boot somewhere, but I never do this at popular surf (or windsurfing for me) spots as thieves are wise to this strategy and are watching...all they need to do is smash a window and the car is theirs! A safer alternative for me has been to use an Ocean & Earth waterproof key pouch which slings around my neck and sits inside my wettie. It has never leaked but as extra insurance I put the key in a mini ziplock first! They cost around $6. see here http://store.oceanearth.com/epages/s...ducts/OEAMWA31
What to do with your keys when you go surfing or kiteboarding?
Here is the solution for any surfers or kiteboarders looking for a secure, fast, easy way to store their keys while out on the water. The HitchSafe slides into your current standard 2" Hitch Receiver on your Truck, SUV or Van and is secured inside the Receiver Hitch via two bolt retaining bars inside the HitchSafe. The Hitch Receiver itself is a solid steel vault that combined with the HitchSafe provides the most secure location on your vehicle to store spare keys, credit cards, cash and driver's license!!
To access your keys you simply release the Rubber dust cover (made to look like any normal Hitch Cover), enter in your personal 4 number dial combination, which then releases the drawer and allows access to your keys, cards or more...
The HitchSafe easily installs/uninstalls in seconds with no tools required!
Great for outdoor activities where taking keys along is a hassle or they can become lost.
This solution is far superior to the magnetic key holders that fall off at the first bump. If your magnetic Hide-A-Key has not joined the millions of them laying on the side of the road, you then have an open invitation for someone to steal your car because everyone knows where they are hidden! The HitchSafe is contained within the solid steel structure of the Hitch Receiver via a combination where only YOU can access your keys when needed.
