Hi guys. I am another victim of the floppy gear shift lever. Rang Peter at All Fourx4 spares & bingo the spare part (as described by Timmay above) is on the way. Cost $198 + delivery (approx $23) & Peter says they are genuine Toyota part (which normally costs $345)

Bro-in-law told me he lost the lockout between D and 3rd gear after a trip to Newnes on the weekend. Sounds like the problematic bullet collar described above.

Thanks for the pics and the supplierr info.

Mine has done the same..After fitting a new diff centre on the Blue Rag Track i drove to the tee junction below the trigg point and then proceeded to fight the gearshift for 10 mins before losing the detent.Luckily the bullet must have fallen out because i would of pushed it off the mountain at that point LOL LOL.will pull it apart in the next couple of day to fix.

I had mine pulled out with a spare one waiting to replace it and low and behold, the collar wasn't broken. The pin had jumped out (didn't find it, so it must have been vacuumed up!) and it all looks good.
The plastic guides were a bit short on grease which is probably why it jumped. I will probably shorten the spring and put a longer 'bullet' in it. Do I need a spare?
I will have to try and sell it or get the wrecker to swap it for something else. Not sure where to advertise it either.

            Bill,
My bro-in-law in Sydney would be interested. The gear lever is still working from P to D positions, so he's not too worried at the moment (as there are limited funds) but it will eventually need to be fixed. What's it worth from the wreckers?

Mine cost $250 from Central Coast 4x4. You can have my spare for $100. Need the bullet but that is easily made,.

This is a good thread... I have noticed my shift lever getting harder and harder to shift so after reading this thread I dismantled the shift lever. What i found was, inside the mechanism there was minimal grease and alot of dust and dirt... I gave it a clean and loaded it right up with new grease. The shift quality of the the mechanism has now improved dramatically... i think I may have just given my auto shift lever another couple of years of life before it breaks... laughing!!!

I decided to take mine out for a look since it is a 2003 model and the same age as my bro-in-law. Here are step-by-step instructions in case anyone else want to open up theirs to check.

                    1. Turn ignition off, handbrake up, transfer case lever in the H position
                    2. Slide drivers seat all the way back
                    3. Press shift lock button and shift the transmission lever into Neutral.
                    4. Unscrew the knob for the transfer case lever. The knob separates from the cloth cover.
                    5. Unscrew the knob for the auto shift lever. The auto shift lever knob DOES NOT separate from the cloth cover.
                    6. Unzip the cover for the handbrake.
                    7. Remove the silver trims on either side of the console. Start at the handbrake end and work your way forward.
                    8. Open the lid of the centre console compartment (where you usually place your left elbow when driving) behind the handbrake.
                    9. Lift the top of the centre console cover by pulling at the plastic above the cup holders.
                    10. Then go around the side edges of the centre console cover and release it from the clips underneath. Do not remove completely as there is a cable connected underneath.
                    11. Disconnect the cable under the centre console cover next to the handbrake. The release clip/tab is on the passengers side. You'll just have to use your fingers to feel for it.
                    12. Lift the centre console cover up, first over the transfer case lever, then the auto shift lever. The cover would still be stuck by the handbrake.
                    13. Swing the front edge of the centre console cover to the left while lifting it off the handbrake cover. You should now see the shift lever and case.
                    14. At the rear of the shift lever case is a pin that looks like a hinge. It is not a hinge. Remove the pin by removing the push-on washer at the end of the pin.
                    15. The shift lever cover should now open.

Do the reverse to put it all back together.

I was on the phone with mackayvx and he suggested that it was a good idea to put together a 'repair kit'. So for just a few bucks, I have been able to get some longer bullets machined up. I have also got on order the push-on star washer for that 'hinge' pin. Just waiting now for the spring manufacturers to get back to me with shorter springs.

                      .
Hey andrew, the cloth trim does seperate from the auto stick in the same way as the transfer case lever... just push the plastic shroud down (with some muscles lol) and it will slide down the stick... yours might have been a virgin!

Im happy to hear you have been able to get some bullets made - thats great!

Hi folks. I have just replaced my auto gear shift with a replacement one from All Fourx4 Spares. Couldn't find the old bullet anywhere so made one from a 6mm drill bit cut to 2.5mm (which i believe is about 5mm longer than the original). Shortened the spring by about 5mm too. Took the white plastic assembly out of the old gear shift and screwed it back in. However when I have everything back together (incl the shift lock) the gear lever works ok but the dashboard gear indication doesn't align with what gear i'm in. I have a feeling it has something to do with that little 'hook' that comes out of the white plastic assembly and doesn't connect to anything obvious. Any thoughts on what is are the mechanics/connections that feed the dashboard gear indication????

What year model is yours, Drew? Mine is an 05 (4 speed), and when I rang them, they took my VIN and called me back to tell me the ones they have aren't compatible with mine.

Does yours select the correct gear etc for gear stick position? (Do you get park and low without drama's?) If not, the shift cable might be slightly out of adjustment.

                                Hello all,

is there any more room for another auto box selector failure?

My 2005 LC3 has now got the broken bullet syndrome.
I have about 400,000km on the clocks, so not too shabby.

I can still select all the gears, and to be honest, I am in Drive for 99,999% of teh time any way.

However, if I want to select 4th, I physically have to hold it there, ie, hold it to the left of "Drive"
If I take my hand off the auto lever, it will just flop over back into Drive position.

I am in UK, so really don't have access to your spare parts, well, except at a large shipping cost.

It seems like all the photos from the 2nd poster, are not on this thread any more?

                                Does any one have them?
Any chance some one can "re-post " them?

                                Thanks in advance
