The both make good radios, uniden make normal citizen band UHF where as the bulk of icom 's are commercial radios, we have run them extensively for 25 years with VicSes, we now run simoco Smr base stations but still run Icom UHF portables, they have excellent output and are extremely reliable. Their commercial base radios have 25 watts output rather than the std 5 watt output of a standard UHF cb. Both are reliable and both will probably do you what you require.

The biggest con with the Icom IC440N is the cost, the Uniden UH7760NB can be had for as little as $244 "buy it now" on eBay. The Icom IC440N on the other hand will set you back ~$400 mark.
I have an IC440 currently and it's installed under the centre console, works fine there. I'm changing over to the UH7760NB for the 80 channels plus to match up with my handheld (controls pretty much the same, etc). I can't give you much feedback on the install as I didn't do the Icom and haven't had a chance to try the Uniden yet.

Not one for drilling holes and cutting bits out of our pride and joy i used my Uniden handheld ( http://www.uniden.com.au/australia/p...SXnb_index.asp )
with a external antenna(s). The unit sits in the centre console and being a 5 watt unit it works pretty much as good as a fixed unit does. I have 2 antennas, a 3.5db and 6db. The advantage is that i can take my hand held out and with me if i need to spot and or take with me in a back pack.
works for me
Hi Diksta,
Can't give feedback yet, but the other half got me a Uniden UH7760NB for Xmas. Just been waiting for the bullbar purchase before fitting. Have just purchased that and gets installed in three weeks, so can let you know how it performs soon. have had Uniden in the past and have worked well, and seem good value for money.
The base unit is very small, so expect it will install under the dash relatively
easily. I agree with mounting in behind the centre console, that was my plan.

2012 GXL TD 150 Series Prado - a build (albeit a slow one) in progress
well i have installed the IC 440n, got one for $415 while in brisbane a week or so back, found a bracket up under the dash on the drivers side next to the steering column that had nothing on it, made a bracket to adapt to it and bolted it in, used some heavy duty double sided tape to stick the hand piece to the dash, it all turned out pretty well, the only down side was the antenna i ordered on ebay hasn't turned up yet. the antenna was $40 cheaper on ebay than anywhere else i tried so i guess it will be here next week.

I have an Icom 440N and RFI CDQ5000 for outback and CDQ34 for around town. Great package and can't fault any of it, but as others have said it's pricey. About $650 for the lot, not including installation.
I'm not sure about the size of other unit's, but the icom "black box" fits perfectly behind the trim panel, next to glove box on LHS. There are existing nutserts already available, just had to drill another hole or two in the Icom bracket to get the angles right but it went in without problem (although a tight squeeze) and is much better than drilling the car. It's also an easy location to run power and coax to as it is right behind the left hand grommet in the firewall.
I used a Click-On Angled mount from Holdmyphone.com to mount the hand piece bracket (again, no holes drilled in car). The hand piece extension socket runs under the scuff plate and is stuck below the passenger seat, this makes the cord the perfect length for both driver and passenger to use and is well out of the way when not in use.
I'm digging up an older thread, I know, but I'm hoping for some feedback on those who have the Icom 440N.
I'm looking at a new UHF and want one with the controls on the mic. I've looked at the GME TX3345, TX3540 and Icom 440N. Given the Icom has the speaker in the handpiece this is the one prefer and it costs about the same as the TX3540 and only a little more than the TX3345. I was worried that the sound level and quality from the mic speaker might be poor but from reading posts on here it sounds like everyone is happy with that aspect.
My only real worry now is the complexity of using it because I've read elsewhere that it's not as user friendly as the GME models. The only features I want to use are changing channels and volume, priority channel and scanning. So for those who have one are those basic functions easy enough to use? Am I going to get driven batty having to press another button before changing channels for example?
The only usability challenge I have with the Icom is to change the channels you need to press the CH/SQ button first otherwise you just put the volume up/down. Priority is easy to set, pick your channel then press/hold PRIO button to set. To scan you just press the SCAN button.

Will that hand piece location interfere with your airbag deployment? There is one right where you have put it.
Andoland, another option is the Oricom 280. It's a 5 watt, 80 channel remote mic with all the controls on the hand piece.
A lot cheaper. Is it as good quality as the GME, I don't know but I haven't had any issues with it.

Im not Bogged - I've just lost traction. . . . . and now I'm showing the wife why I bought those Maxtrax, and the tyre deflator, and the compressor, and the bullbar, and the winch, and a lot of other goodies I've hidden in the Prado

Thanks. I'm happy to pay for the Icom, you only ever hear/read good things about them quality wise.
Just a follow up from my post on my Oricom 280. On my flinders / birdsville trip it started working intermittently, most likely due to the 12-16 hours of drivng we did everyday. Very frustrating. Now it's completely dead! Need to investigate further, may be power related.
