  • Biggest tyres you can fit on GX wheels?

Im looking at buying a GX 150 prado and GX only have 17x6.5 wheels with 245/70 tyres whats the biggest tyre I can fit?
Will I have to move up to 7.5 wide wheel?
Has anyone fitted 16x7.5 steel wheels?

      Hi All,

Given the above statement, and the info from the Prado rim and offset database:

      150 Series
      GX 17x6.5" ET15
      GXL 17x7.5" ET25
      VX+ 18x7.5" ET25

If my 150 GX already has 265/65/17 on them - does this mean they are GXL rims already?

      Cheers,
      Kevin

Most likely. Have you got a picture? They have different spoke designs.

Yeah, saw images of the two. GXL has a tapered edge on each side of the spoke whereas the GX looks flat.

Only just got it back this arvo and the Mrs has taken it out....

Well, definitely GX rims with 265/65/17 Bridgestone H/T. Is this dodgy?

I presume if I want to go for 275/70/17 I will need to change rims?

              Hello Shodown,

What do you mean by biggest tyres. Width or Diameter or both. 265/65/15 tyres are unsuitable for 6.5 inch rims and may be unsafe and not covered by your insurance as they should not be fitted to less than 7.5 inch rims.

You could fit TOYO LT235/80/17 tyres to GX rims and get the same diameter as 265/70 but you have less suppliers available. Change your rims to 7.5 or 8.0 inch if you want wider ( bigger ) than 245/70/17 rims. Things are unsafe enough on and off road without pushing tyres limits beyond the manufacturers recommendations.

              regards

              Ross

                Hey Ross,

I bought the car with these rims / tyres from a car yard. They seem like GX rims to me - I even visited a yard last night and saw both GX and GXL rims in the flesh.

At the moment, I would say the current tyres have 50% remaining - I was thinking of changing up to 275/70 once the wore a bit.

I am certainly not looking to do anything dodgy here - just preparing for tyre change over, which might be sooner than I expected. Will have to check the wheel stamp when I get home.

                Kevin

Most manufacturers would recommend a 7.5" wide rim as the minimum for either a 265 or a 275. I think you are pushing your luck to be honest. Get some GXL or aftermarket wheels. Aired down there would be a big chance that the tyres will pop off.

Yeah - I noticed last night they bag a little already - looking like they are slightly low (when they are not).

Keeping my eye out for a set of GXL or FJ wheels.

Quite like the look of bobthemonkeys 150 with FJ's.

The 150 with the FJ wheels look pretty good and a bit more track never goes astray. Be worth pming Hutch and Craigm and maybe Derek to see what they bought and how much. Some of the aftermarket wheels are certainly strong and good value.
