Hehe, thanks. We actually were going to buy the Kakadu but I went for the VX based on suspension alone. I wanted to be able to upgrade it to tow better and handle the bar, winch etc. In hindsight the Kakadu would have been a better buy now seeing ARB can do the upgrade.

Very happy with th VX but and the GPS.

    • I love the Kakadu but can't find anyone in Perth that can raise it so that's my only gripe so far. No doubt with time something in Perth will be available.

      • GPS / DVD / TV / Front and Rear Camera Install

Well as promised here at the images of where I located the parts for the new Extreme Electronics GPS, DVD, TV, Camera System that I purchased. I still have not got the cameras working correctly yet as the Toyota system in 5V and I sent 12v to it. I have had to buy a new camera... More on that later.

This is the finished job, you will see the TV infrared control point is just below the hazard light switch. You will also have to put the hazard light switch in upside down but I am going to try and buy one from OS for the LHD car.

I have put an iPod 80GB classic into the glove box with the supplied iPod cable. Works a treat, full control of it with all playlists, albums etc.

The Digital TV works well but not in the garage and rarely as you drive along. I use it for more of when I am waiting for my wife.

        More to come...

        • I installed the TV antennas to each side of the front windscreen, you can not notice them unless you look for them and it seems to be the best spot.

I installed the phone kit mic to the centre of the windcreen above the rear vision mirror, I would have liked to use the oe mic but that is not an option. The phone kit controls on the steering wheel also do not work which is a bit of a bummer but the phone control on the main unit is heaps better then the factory kit.

Not for the faint of hearted. Try as much as you will to make it a nice and neat job the wires just do not allow it, you get it all neat and then you cannot push the unit in or something is tight. I found it better to push the 3 things in and then tidy it up...

This is what the old unit looked like...

The new unit is a far better improvement in my opinion. It just took a little longer to get it going then i would have liked. The camera part is still getting to me and it will be resolved as soon as the new cameras arrive. I may have to rewire the whole car but my mate Scott at Olbis is on the case now so fingers crossed he will sort it.

          Cheers Daniel

Don't discount an early arrival, both ours exactly 3 weeks early!! Caught us by surprise.

                  • Nicely done Dan. I'd have to agree with your comment on the stock unit... Most of it is very impractical, inaccurate or useless. I only use the USB port for music and bluetooth to receive calls, all else is rubbish. In today's technological age, I'd expect the sort of unit you've put in to be stock standard or at least a factory option. I guess I'm asking for too much

By the way have you gotten used to all the controls being inverted? I mean out of habit, I'd probably hit the "tune" knob instead of the "power" knob to turn it on haha

                    • Thanks William, spot on with the old unit. The only thing I miss is the rear view camera and the distance to empty. I know that the DTE is also in the main cluster but we have that set to advise the eco settings and it is funny how you get used to things. Funny you said about the tune thing, that was the first thing my wife said to me, she could not turn it down. I then pointed out the steering wheel controls and she said she meant off, again on the opposite side. Couple of weeks and it will be old hand.

                      • @Dan
I'm surprised the camera got damaged with the 12v applied. I originally hooked mine up to 5 volts, but it wouldn't work, I then applied 12v and it's fine. Been several months now and still ok, same with the second unit I hooked up for a mate. Any chance you hooked it up reverse polarity, as it would be easy to do since they don't use the conventional red for + and black for -? I think they use black for + and brown for - then red for video and white for video ground. Can't see why this unit didn't come with a pre wired patch lead for the rear camera like it did for the other connections.

You're right about the mess of wires, I was worried by the amount of pressure I had to apply to push the player all the way back, but in the end it all looks the goods. Let us know if you get a source for the left hand hazard switch, as it would make for a better installation.

                        • Not sure on the camera smoov, we ended up hooking the old system back up and no go but got it to work with a new camera... I still cannot get the camera to work in the new system with reverse and it is really starting to P me off, and the heavily pregnant wife who just wants her 'reverse camera' to work! We have the camera working in reverse through the TV but when connected to the CCD-In plug and the blue reverse wire nothing. I did notice but when watching a DVD with the reverse camera wired up as previously mentioned the system comes up with 'enjoy music whilst driving' when you select reverse even though we have the brake wire earthed out... I am really starting to scratch my head on this one.

                          • @Dan
Only thing I can think of, is make sure the blue reverse wire (from the player) connects to the red wire 2nd in on the loom that used to go into the old lcd screen. As for the green brake wire, I just connected it to the chassis of the player, if you still get the "enjoy music" thingo, there's got to be a fault in the player.

Maybe do the mod that lets you put the camera on via a dashboard switch, although that should be the same as going into reverse, but at least it will prove your wiring one way or the other.

Sorry I can't think of anything else.
