  • Reverse Camera Modifications - for ease of use

Heres a little mod to turn your Prado`s reversing camera into a rear view camera on demand.

The Rear Vision Camera is standard in GXL, VX and SX models. However it is only activated when selecting reverse, wouldn`t it be nice to see what`s behind you at other times, like when offroad or keeping an eye on your trailer?

Your display needs to look like this; a 4.2" screen as found in the GXL, VX and SX models. - NOT the Kakadu or ZR Models.

    1) To begin, ensure ignition power if OFF, then remove the clock panel - firmly grip and pull outward.

    2) Now you can see two bolts, these are securing the screen unit into place, remove these using a 10mm socket.

    3) Firmly but gently, grip and pull the entire screen and vent pod outwards.

    4) From the main entry loom, locate the single red wire (Reverse light wire) - This is the wire which becomes powered when you select reverse which in turn activates the camera.

    5) Now, locate the blue wire in the same loom (Constant power from ignition). be sure to select the correct blue wire, as shown. (Blue wire in the centre of the plug).

Essentially, the idea behind this project is to bridge the blue ignition powered wire, to the red reverse activating wire via a switch.

    6) How you connect the wires is up to you, I found 3 way junction connectors easy for me.

6a) You need to add a switch to the bridge wire, in order to activate or deactivate upon demand.

    7) Now, this is really important: you need to install a common semiconductor diode onto the red reverse wire before the junction point.
A diode is a one way electrical check valve, which only allows current to travel in one direction. If you dont install one the reverse lights will always be on when you have the camera switched on as the entire
    circuit will be live.
You can easily get an inexpensive diode from Jaycar or any similar outlet which sells specialised electrical components. It may well be worth getting a couple extra in case you overheat one in the soldering
    process.

A common inline diode such as Part#: 1N4001 - 1N4007 will be fine.

This can be a bit tricky, but you need to solder the diode into place. The banded end must be positioned downstream (toward screen) of the entering current. This will block the current from the remainer of
the reverse light circuit. Be sure to protect the surrounding area when soldering by placing a sheet of foil underneath when you solder, of coarse be so careful with the hot iron around the upholstery..

8 ) Tidy and wrap all wires and joins with heat shrink or electrical tape, being sure to protect all live wires from shorting out.

    9) Re-fit screen pod and clock panel, then mount your switch to a location of your choice.

Press the switch to OFF, to read the fuel / temp / range information screens. (Reverts to factory setup, including reversing camera only when reverse is selected)
Press the switch to ON, to activate the camera full time.

COMPLETE. It works, notice the gear lever in the forward gear, with rear view camera active.

Please note: This may void your warranty, I accept no resposibility for any damage caused.
    Don`t become distracted whilst driving.

        Re: Anytime Reverse Camera Mod

        I'm wondering about that diode.

        Consider the SPDT Switch:

The red line into the screen unit is connected to COM

The original reverse circuit is connected to L1

The 12v supply is connected to L2

When the switch is thrown, the 12v supply is connected to the screen unit, the original reverse circuit should be isolated, so no need for any diodes, or is there something else going on?

          Re: Anytime Reverse Camera Mod

          Michael,

The actual setup is different to your diagram.

Your diagram is roughly correct for when the switch is closed, however when open it is actually providing power to L1, (Powering the reverse wire) not directly to COM (Screen). Hence the need for the diode.

This is necessary if you want the camera to continue activating like it was before mod, when selecting reverse even if you have the switch off.

If you don`t install the diode, your reverse lights and parking sensors will activate whenever the switch is on.

So you could use a three way switch and no diode? but more wires? Camera works in reverse when switch up and camera works all time when you flick swith down?

Ironman, I'm still not getting it.

I see how yours works. You pick up 12v, run it through your switch and connect it to the red wire which activates the screen and the reverse circuit. Adding the diode stops the reverse circuit activating whilst still allowing you to activate the screen.

My suggestion is to cut the red wire and run both ends to the switch, along with the 12v feed. The switch has 2 positions:

Off) will connect the red wire together, everything operates as per factory.

On) will connect 12v to the screen and isolate the reverse circuit (from both the screen and 12v)

              Does that make sense?

No doubt there is a few ways to go about the same thing.

I chose the diode method, and it works well.

If you have any luck with alternate setups, im sure we would all be happy to see an example.

2 Way switch fitted to GXL reverse camera

I have just done the 2 way switch modification to my GXL similar to the post from ironman4x4 (that I can't find ?)

Very easy and quick, I will post some pictures later or email me for some high res pictures.

This allows you to view the rear camera image any time you wish.

                  Regards

Re: 2 Way switch fitted to GXL reverse camera

Simply pull the a/c control panel off the dash - Easy.

Loosen the 2 size 10 bolts under the screen.

Pull the screen and a/c vents out as one complete unit and unplug the harnesses.

Note the red wire (Reverse signal +) and the 2nd Blue wire (ign +).

Cut the red wire and bare the blue wire as shown.

Make a short harness with a 2 way switch.

Note that the centre wire (the one with the yellow tag) is the one that must be connected to the screen. The other 2 wires are ign + (blue) and rev + (red).

                    Join and solder the wires.

                    Tape up the wires.

Fit the switch to a spare opening and re-assemble.

THIS IS DONE AT YOUR OWN RISK AND MAY VOID YOUR WARRANTY ON THE SCREEN / CAMERA.

Thanks for that, have been trying to find the last thread about this mod and from what I can remember, this is a far easier way to do it than the previous one, very easy to follow

That is great. It would be very useful if you tapped into the rear camera with a caravan camera. If only someone could do the same tutorial for the ZR/Kakadu.
                          Thanks,

dont you need to put a diod in ther to stop the reverse lights coming on when you flick the switch?

No, that is why we use a 2 way switch. The 2 way switch effectively disconnects the reverse lamps from the circuit when flick over to 'always on'
