  • Where to install CB radio ??

    Hi all,
I have a GXL manual / diesel and I am having trouble finding a suitable mounting place for my UHF (TX4400). I am sure most of you guys would have radio's and was just looking for a few suggestions.

    Regards JPS

    Re: UHF Radio

    Hi JPS

I have the same issue I spoke to OLBIS here in Brisbane and they haven't fitted one yet either, he did suggest that the GME with the remote face might be the go, pity as I have a Uniden that has a GPS incorporated that I would like to refit.

You can't use a dash pod either as there is a speaker there, maybe forced to go to a roof console.

    Regards, Richo.

      Re: UHF Radio

I have a 120 and just bought a TX3440 $385. Magic unit. You can programme 59 listening channels, police, ambo, fire, ses, etc, all through the hand mic no computer or cable needed. All you see is hand mic and it's cable speaker is in unit under dash very loud. Just a option, maybe fit old two-way in your 2nd car?

        150 UHF Installation

I am in the process of negotiating with our local Toyota dealer for a new GXL. Before joining the Forum I found a thread on fitting a UHF to the 150 Prado, but now I cannot find it. The owner installed the UHF under the radio and I would be interested in some photos (if possible).

I have a GME TX 3200 fitted to our Ford Territory and am going to transfer it to our new Prado. If the thread owner could get in contact, I would be grateful. If anyone knows the thread I am talking about I would be grateful.

        Thanks

          Re: UHF Radio

          Richo,

          You have a PM.

          As I see it........the 150 has 4 choices:

          Roof mount
High quality Hand held 5watt unit with external antenna and speaker mike.Performance similar to built-in.
          Icom IC440
          GME TX3340

No panel space is available in GXL.......IC440 and TX3340 will work.......combox under seat with mike/speaker/control mounted near centre console.

          Cheers,

            Re: UHF Radio

I have a TX3340 and will be transferring from my (old) Pajero to my (new) 150 when it arrives end of March. Interested to know if anyone has fitted a TX3340 and if so where, I currently have it mounted behind the panel under the stearing wheel and the volume is plenty load enough. Also has anyone any advice on where to take an ignition switched power feed from without compromising any of the electrics

            Cheers

              Re: UHF Radio

I do believe the TX3340 is smaller than the TX3440 so you'll have no trouble fitting it under your dash. I own a old 120 prado and i ran a power wire straight from my 2nd battery so i can use it while key is off?

                Re: UHF Radio

Thanks for advice, yes it is a very small unit, it has been great so far, very clear sound and more than loud enough. I might go the direct wire route this time. Didn't before in case I was too stupid to leave it switched on and drain the battery

                        Thanks all for the feedback.
I did talk to the guy's at the " Department of the Interior" ( www.consoles.com.au ) but they have no plans yet for the 150.
They said they would need a vehicle to be left there for 3 days. Might be up for a new radio.

                        Regards John P

                            Re: UHF Radio

I've sold the TX4400 as I have the same problem. Replaced it with a TX3440. Puting the unit under the dash is OK just be aware that we have a knee airbag and not to interfere with that.

I think mounting the mic on the dash is the harder part. I'm trying to find room for that and also the Tekonsha P3 brake controller. The best place for the brake controller I've come up with so far is below the parking sensor and 2nd start switches but high enough to be out of the way from the airbags again. This doesn't leave room for the mic. I'm considering using a holdmyphone clip on mount and putting the mic on the passenger side on the console. Then where to run the cable??

Setting up a new car is fun!!

                              Hi Silvo

I fitted the TX3440 transmitter under the power outlet in the centre console in my 120. I connected the extension cable to the unit and brought it up under the dash on the LHS of the steering column. I simply plug the microphone into the jack when I need the unit. I also screwed the mounting clip to the short end of a roofing strap (available from Bunnings) that I had sprayed black. The long end of the strap fits neatly and securely into the gap between air vent surround and the vinyl trim around the instrument cluster. The hand unit is easily reached in this position.

                              Cheers
