• Hi all

Hoping someone can confirm if the RoadSafe recovery points ie these ones http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item...d=181634228956 will suit a 150 VX with ARB winch BBar? Anyone fitted and If so any issues? (Seems hard to get 100% confirmation elsewhere !)

    Thanks in advance

    • Keen to hear from any 150 owner (preferably with KDSS) with a ARB delux (winch) bullbar that has successfully retro fitted front recovery points. What brand of recovery point did you fit ? Keen to ensure we get one that fits 100%!!

      Thanks in advance

      • Borgy,

cannot confirm all you questions but they do fit on a 150 facelift.
from what I have read on here they may not fit up to the ARB bar.

        PS.
        the name "Borgy" familiar.
Did you ever work for a crane company and had an 80 at the time.

Thanks... Yeah it seems strange that it is so hard to confirm that there is one that will fit 100% with Arb bbar.

ARB now do recovery points, bit expensive but designed to fit with their bars and over engineered to the max

                  • Thanks Kev - Yeah saw those over engineered ones at $250 each side!

Have now purchased the RoadSafe ones .. and will be attempting the install on my mates 150 this weekend

(Just gotta confirm the torque setting for the 4 bolts to ensure we have it right!)

                    Cheers

                      • The Recovery Point Install!

                        Hi all

OK so we had success. The RoadSafe (#RP-PRA150) is what we bought. I confirm that we successfully installed them both on a Prado 150 VX (KDSS) 2014 model with a ARB Winch Bull Bar fitted.

                        It took approx. 1 1/4 - 1 1/2 hours.

We did remove the front wheel(s) one at a time, to make access easier so that added to the time.

                        Drivers Side:

This ended up being the easiest side. The ARB team fitted the bulbar with the nut-tail and this was snapped of just inside the rectangle opening in the chassis. Putting a set of vice grips help this from dropping and after undoing the bolts (one closet to the cabin first - Made the call to leave one in at a time) we were able to easily retrieve it from the chassis with no issues. Then bending the supplied nut-tail in the other direction at the bend than supplied with a another bend 1 inch from the end of the tail to assist turning and then inserting into the opening until visible thru the bolt hole. Then threaded the 12.9 HT bolt into the nut held behind it - not all the way at this point, just enough to still allow the recovery point to be moved into position. Note: we used the existing flat washer and spring was that was on the original bolt as they were more substantial.

Then proceeding to undo the remaining bolt (one closet to the bull bar) and move the recover point into position and thread the last bolt into the existing captive nut in place within the chassis.

Then torqued both bolts up to the ARB recommended torque setting of 77nm. And then refitted the front lower bull bar wings back on noting that due to the fitted bolt being further out, it touched the 13mm bolt holding the bottom of the wing - so we used an additional spring washer (from the recovery pack) to increase the gap and the front drivers side was done !

                        Passengers Side:

This was not as easy as the drivers!.. Took a bit more looking and thinking The rectangle hole/opeining as per the other side was mostly blocked by some KDSS gear !

With a bit of poking around we could just see there was another ARB installed nut-tail and followed it and manage to feel it just inside this round hole -

We could not get any grips, etc on it this time, but with another pair of hands available we were able to hold onto to the end of it whilst undoing the rear bolt (again, the one closest to the cabin). Then carefully sliding the tail forward with fingers to the square hole in front of it we could just get the hole full length tail out (i.e. it was not cut).

The new nut-tail was a little trickier to fit and yes after bending it again to suit and having the flat plate of the nut facing up we could just fit it thru the same corresponding hole as we did on the other side, even with the KDSS gear in the way!

From there it was a simple process to repeat the same approach as the other side fitting this and the remaining bolt.

I hope this helps others! Happy to help with any other questions...

                        Cheers

                        • I fitted mine this afternoon, took about 1/2 hour a side. on a 150 GXL with ARB deluxe bullbar.

The trick I found (with help) with the nut on a wire (or strip of flat in the case of the ARB one) was to get the bolt to its last few threads, using the wire from the new nuts put pressure on the ARB captured nut from the square hole behind the nut. Just as the bolt releases it pushes the ARB one forward and then allowing you to grab it and remove via one of the holes available.

If ARB don't snap off the tab on their captured nut it would be a lot easier to remove. They could easily leave it on there is no reason to snap it off.

I left the wheels on, just turned them out of the way. I found there was heaps of room. I don't have the KDSS though.

                          • We put the RoadSafe (#RP-PRA150) on to a stock Prado GX 2014. Did put the car on chasis stands but left the wheels on. No dramas, enough room. Each side took about 20 minutes to fiddle and fasten the two bolts.

                            • Hi, i should have a set of RS recovery points for my car this week. What was the Torque people are using for their bolts?

                              Thanks

                              Comment

                              • I also fitted a set of these recovery points to my 2010 GXL today and I also have an ARB Deluxe bar fitted so the previous posts were a big help.

The passenger side took about 10mins, the drivers side took two hours! Thought I'd post some pics to add to the previous posts in order to illustrate some issues I had.

Firstly, I was unaware of just what these ARB captive nuts looked like and assumed they looked like the replacement 'nut on a wire' that came with the Roadside recovery points. Here's what the ARB ones look like...

And this is about where they sit inside the chassis rail.

Because I thought they were the same as the shorter Roadsafe ones I mistakenly assumed they came out through the small rectangular hole in the side of the chassis where you insert the Roadsafe ones. (Stole your photo Borgy!)

They don't, you pull the ARB ones out through the front, through the forward most rectangular hole. I was able to put my fingers through the circular hole and hold it while I undid the rear bolt.

Here is where my problem started! The hole in the ARB bulbar mount and what I think was a hole in the chassis rail that you're supposed to pull the nut through didn't line up perfectly. This meant that when I got to the end of the ARB nut, where it widens out and the actual nut is located, I couldn't get it through the hole! The nut kept hitting the edge and it didn't matter which way I turned it. This pics tries to illustrate the issue...

What I ended up having to do was loosen the bullbar mount and pry it across to the left just enough to line the holes up a little better. Then with the help of a sturdy screwdriver I was able to lever the nut past the misaligned opening and out into the world! (You'll have to bend the long silver tab a bit to get it out.)

Fitting the Roadsafe 'nut on a wire' through the rear smaller rectangular hole was straight forward as was locating it with the bolt. I cut the excess wire off just outside the hole so I can easily access it.

When I went to fit the lower bolt I realised it wasn't going to be long enough. The pic below doesn't look too bad but it still has to go through the bullbar mounting plate so you lose about 3-4mm there and you'd end up with about 4-5 threads in the nut in the chassis. ARB had made a bit of a dog's breakfast of the first few threads in the chassis when they fitted the bullbar as well (Really not impressed with their workmanship!) so I opted to get some longer bolts. The originals were M14 x 1.5 x 30, I replaced them with M14 x 1.5 x 50 (20mm longer).

I then noticed that the bolts wouldn't fit through the hole in the Roadsafe bracket, they were extremely close so I took off the powder coating and a 'poofteenth' of material with a round file and they slid straight through. Crisis averted!

Finally I refitted the 'wings' and as Borgy mentioned the lower mounting bolt for the Roadsafe bracket hits the 13mm bolt so an extra flat washer under the head of the bolt easily solved that issue.

ALL DONE! Without the ARB nut issues it would have been a relatively quick job.

2010 GXL Prado D4D Auto - ARB Deluxe winch bar, Roadsafe recovery points, Rhinorack Pioneer platform, AMTS fuel filter/compressor combo bracket with FM100 filter and ARB compressor, Maxtrax, TIN175 transmission oil cooler bracket and tranny cooler. I'm sure I'll find something else....
