  • Howto: Fit HID's into Factory Headlights (GX/GXL)

<Admin note> Pradopoint whislt carrying this information reminds members to check thier local ADR's in regards to compliance of using HID headlights. (Most ADR rulings state Auto-leveling headlights and washers are required).
If you choose to follow this guideline without compliance to the ADR's you are doing so solely at your own risk, and with no comeback or blame to Pradopoint or its Admin/owners if you are apprehended by local authorities in regards to HID fitment and comliance to ADR rules.

I've just finished installing the HID's into my Prado with a mate this afternoon, and thought id document the process.

    Tools Needed:
    • Phillips Head screwdriver[/*:m:2pzeo20m]
    • Small flat bladed screwdriver[/*:m:2pzeo20m]
    • 10mm Socket/Ring Spanner/Open Ended Spanner[/*:m:2pzeo20m]
    • 1/4" Drill Bit [/*:m:2pzeo20m]
    • Drill[/*:m:2pzeo20m]
    • 2x Ballasts either 35w or 50w & H11 HID Globes (Low Beam) [im using 50w][/*:m:2pzeo20m]
    • 2x Ballasts 50w & 9005 HID Globes (High Beam)[/*:m:2pzeo20m]

Step 1 - Remove plastic Radiator Guard from Engine Bay

To remove the black radiator guard, you need to remove the 15 plastic rivets as per the picture below. To remove gently insert a flat blade screwdriver into the gap and leverage out. Once this is done remove the black radiator guard

Step 2 - Remove front Grill

Next you need to remove the front grill, this gets a little tricky so be patient. Start by removing the 4 plastic rivets, then peal then black rubber away from the grill to expose and remove to more black rivets (BE GENTLE, THESE CAN BE FRAGILE!!!!

Next remove the two screws holding the top of the grill to the Radiator support bar

Next you need to start to remove the grill, inside the grill (Sorry no photos for this) on either side, you will find clips you need to release, as you do this the grill will pop forward, once you release the two sides, work your way along the bottom of the grill, between the grill and bumper, releasing all the clips. Do this until the grill becomes free.

Step 3 - Removing front Bumper

Next remove the two screws from either wheel arch holding the bumper in place, in addition to approx 4 underneath the middle of the bumper. These once again can be removed with either a Phillips head or a 10mm Socket, etc

You will also need to remove the final 4 plastic rivets holding the front bumper down

Once this is done, the bumper is ready to come off, do one last check to make sure there are no screws holding it in-place. Start by lifting the corner of the bumper out and over the screw mounting hole. Next pull the bumper out away from the body ***dont be alarmed by CRACKING sounds, this is normal***

To remove the bumper, your better to have two people to assist, so you dont scratch or damage your front bumper

Now with two people maneuver the front bumper off and clear of the vehicle.

Congratulations, we have now removed the bumpers and can now installed the HID Ballasts!!!

Step 4 - Install HID Ballasts

Now for the easy part. With the bumper off, and lots of access. Practice mount two ballasts (or one if your only choosing to do high beam), get a center punch or perm marker, pencil, etc and mark the mounting holes. Make sure you make a hole high enough that you can get to the otherside from inside the engine bay. If you go too low on the drivers side, you will find your washer bottle!!!!

Step 5 - Install HID Globes

This step is pretty self explanatory, simply remove the OEM Globe from the headlight housing **DO NOT TOUCH GLASS SURFACE WITH YOUR HANDS** and insert the HID Globe in its place. Plug one end of the HID Globe wires into the factory OEM wiring harness, and the other end into HID Ballast. Connect the HIGH VOLTAGE OUTPUT into the HID Globes (this will be self explanatory once again). Do this for all globes. Be sure to match the ballasts with the correct globes, etc (ie 35/low, 50/hi, etc)

Step 6 - Reinstall Front Bumper

Following the steps outlined in Step 3, reinstall the front bumper back onto the car and reinsert required screws and brackets.

Step 6 - Reinstall Front Grill

Once again following the steps outlined in Step 2, reinstall the Grill on the Front Bumper.

Step 7 - Reinstall Radiator Guard

Once again following the steps outlined in Step 2, reinstall the the Radiator Guard and plastic rivets.

    COMPLETED!!!

Now its time to test drive your new lights!!!

Have the laws changed recently to allow you to retrofit HID's as main headlights without auto leveling and washers?

Like most things car enthusiasts do, they are not legal per say. Technically your correct, to be ADR Complaint with HID's, you need Auto leveling and head light washers. That being said though, the amount of people that are using aftermarket HID kits without any issues is quite substantial.

In short, feel free to do so, just understand there is a risk involved, albeit a very minor one.

The guy I buy the kits from, is usually around $250/pair/kit/etc. This includes the ballasts and HID Globes.

Great Job, and thanks for taking the time to document the process.

What is your opinion of the change / upgrade relative to the $500 spend?

              Thanks,

                Thanks,
Wouldnt think twice about it. The difference in light output is incomparable compared to the standard lights. Do it, you wont think twice, i guarantee it!

I cant drive a kilometre down the road at night without being flashed by other drivers who have been blinded by the HIDs in my VX. It wouldnt suprise me that an aftermarket install worked better than factory - auto levelling or no auto levelling.

I dont know if the VX has a manual control to tilt the lights up and down like the GXL does, but I generally have mine at approx 2-2.5/5

                        it doesn't

Ryzz, can you confirm that you used H11 type HIDs for the low beam? i thought they were (9005)HB3 type for low?

Also, with those 15 plastic rivets, you an get them off without a screwdriver, all you do is push the centre pin down (in) and then it will loosen it and you can pull it out. when out, push the centre pin back up and you can put the rivet back in place to hold the plastic cover again. Much easier than the screwdriver.

Alright, so how about insurance? I'm thinking about HID yet it is not that important to risk my claim if for any reason I smash my new Prado. I had oversized tyres in my Rav4 yet I got it signed and reported to RTA. However, it is impossible with aftermarket HIDs.
