Just had my Toyota bar fitted and they charged me $850 for the bar and $210 for the 10000km service. Very Happy

I have a Toyota bar & it has saved the bumper from being damaged several times.
I have only had a glance at the Wynum Bar not sure what protection it will offer the bumper. Anyone????

I have found the Toyota bar has the tongue (& tow ball) quite low. Much lower than any of my previous vehicles.
I had to turn the tongue upside down to gain more height.
Allied with the very soft rear suspension, the tow ball drops even further when the trailer is connected.

This needs to be considered when making your choice

Also, the wiring plug on the Toyota bar is placed upside down i.e. the hinge for the opening flap is at the top and the cover plate is at the bottom. Whether this will be a problem in the rain, I'm not sure.

Have a Toyota bar and wiring fitted the same way as you. Towed the van through dust and sticky thick mud in S.A., and heavy rain in southern N.S.W. So far, no problems.

I have upgraded TJM coils and shocks on my Prado for towing, plus Poly air bags on the rear, and it makes a difference towing a van. If you are only towing a trailer, and don't want to spend too much on a suspension upgrade, at least consider an air bag addition, which should stiffen the rear suspension a bit and may assist with your saggy rear end!!!!!

Yeah all right Yowie, lets just stick to the Prado's sagy rear end and leave mine out of it LOL.
(it is too easy to go off topic I know but fwiw I've pretty much decided to go the std height Tough Dog shocks on std height Kings, with the airbags as you suggested)

Good to hear no water made it into the plug. I wont worry about it but it had me wondering, that's all.

Guys had my Toyota genuine tow bar fitted the other day, took the tongue out and noticed the anti rattle 8mm bolt had damaged thread in the middle. Checked the thread in the nut welded to the bar and it looked nasty as well.

Went back to the dealer and they ran a tap through the nut and gave me a new 8mm bolt and said there you go all fixed. Now the bolt screws in and seems ok albeit with a bit of play in the thread when you screw it in. Out of interest though I tried a 3/8 bolt and it also screws in.....handy isn't it to be able to use either.....seriously though, clearly the thread is damaged. They claim that this occured due to 'bur' when the bolt was first rammed home with (wait for it) a rattle gun. I personaly think they probably over tightened it first thing with the stupid air gun, but I could be wrong. The rest of the insatall looks first class from what I can see underneath.

At the end of the day I guess it doesn't matter given the task it performs and I guess you could always drill it out and retap at a larger size down the track if needed but it just gives you the X!%?# when you pay $850 for a new bar and they don't take care.

                  150 Towbar

Hi all just joined here after viewing the site for a while. Great site. I tried a search but couldn't see what I am after.

Can someone please post some photos of how the towbar looks that is fitted by the guys at Wynnum Brisbane. I have read that it does not sit out as much as the factory one. I just want to see if its still possible to fit an anderson plug to it and not have the cable or the plug on the bottom of the bar.

Also, best price I have found so far for diesel auto gx with the factory towbar and cargo barrier fitted is 55, 800. Whats your thoughts on this?

                  Thanks for any help, John

                    • I got a Kaymar with Toyota factory wiring harness. Works a treat. No problems with running our camper and box trailer. Also ran in brake control wire into same loom. Neat as a pin. Came with instructions and everything. Cheers. mmm beer

                      • Thanks amts I have seen this thread. Doesnt really answer my question regarding the anderson plug position. I will assume that it must go on the bottom of the bar as per the photos. I might ring wynnum. thanks again.

To avoid drilling extra holes into the towbar (might void warranty and ADR), I would utilise the existing holes for the 7-pin flat connector and make another bracket to attach next to this. Then attach the Anderson plug to this bracket.

Just to let you all know, the genuine Toyota wiring harness is made by Lumen, Kaymar also use Lumen to make any of their electrical harnesses. The only difference between the Kaymar wiring kit and the Toyota wiring kit is the Kaymar one also has tails in it to plug the bar lights into. I can guarantee this as I bought the genuine wiring kit planning on using it until I saw the Kaymar kit. PS, anyone looking for a genuine wiring kit I have one for sale.
