    Re: Snorkel for 150 Series

OK, a techincal question. Apart from the obvious water crossing benefit of having a snorkel on a diesel, are there any fuel consumption benefits? I am getting great economy out of my diesel Kakadu, 9.2l since new (11,000km on the clock now) and as low as 8.5l on some highway driving. Wondering what I can expect in this regard (whether its TJM/Airtec of ARB/Safari). Dont want to upset the apple cart so to speak when I am very happy with current mileage.
Graphite D4D Kakadu. ARB Sahara Bar, IPF Lights, Chipped (Tunit), GME TX 3340. Dual Battery System with REDARC Isolator. Safari Snorkel. ARB Fridge, TPMS....

      Re: Snorkel for 150 Series

I have an Airtech snorkel fitted. Very happy with fit and finish. I have not noticed any change to fuel consumption and there is no induction noise, even with the window down. No wind noise at speed either.

i've only ever seen better fuel economy on the previous trucks i've had snorkels installed to. never worse.

thanks for the fuel economy info, pretty much what I assumed. Going to wait until I see both the Airtec and Safari Snorkels up close and personal before I decide which one to go for.....

I personally will be going for a safari as I prefer the look. also curious as to how the airtec will go for water crossings when water comes up over the bonnet and washes up the windscreen? I realize this won't effect most people but just something to consider. the safari wouldn't have a problem due to it's location. also could you fit one of those dust 'socks' to the airtec?

                      Hi

I haven't had a snorkel in the past but relied on cleaning the air filter and a water bra. When we did the Simpson Desert in a convoy of 9 cars the ones with dust socks clogged up and affected the performance of the cars until they removed them.

                      Regards, Richo.

Good points richo, was always sceptical as to whether or not the dust socks did any good. thanks for clearing that up.

my advice would be not to have water come up over the bonnet and the windscreen..

i have done it in the prado, and water entered the car through the air-con system. i had 2 inches of water in the centre console, under the carpet on the drivers and passenger's sides and behind both front seats.. needless to say i spent a long night cleaning muddy water out from the car..

if you were looking at some serious protection, as richo has suggested, a dust bowl precleaner would be better than the sock, but you can't fit one to the airtec, only the safari.

Obviously i wouldnt be going out of my way to drown a new prado worth 60+k, but i have unexpectedly hit holes whilst doing water crossings causing it to come up higher than i'd like. It could quite easily happen if someone were to rush in a bit quick aswell.

Strange you copped that much water inside, i have never had an issue with my 105 cruiser and have had water come up quite high.

Either way, im just raising points for people to consider as these things can happen.

Toyota dealer called today to say they are expecting delivery of Toyota snorkels in a couple of weeks.
Will be interesting to see how they look.
