    Re: extra fuel filter

Mate, That is a fine example of DIY . The only query if any is, How hard it would be to keep an eye on the bowl under the filter for water ? The place you have chosen is ideal but I'm wondering about a shallower system where the bowl is a little higher up .I'm currently looking at a 57litre flow system or whether to go more ie 110litre.I know the Toyota is 2 micron but the filter I would like to use is a 10 micron .I'm only interested in keeping water out .The cost is also something I have to be aware of (pensioner) .I would rather change filters more often (10 micron) than the Toyota one ..I started this thread just to see what people are thinking and doing and it is an excellent response. thank you. Cheers Foxy

      Re: extra fuel filter

I think it should be OK and with water being heavier than Diesel, it should sit on the bottom and be easily seen...... I hope. Not sure what other sizes are available, but u might be able to just get a water trap one only if that's your main concern......

Nice fitting in the photos, one question, did you use locknuts on the filter bracket? I always use Locktite 515 instead of the tape, neither here nor there, each to their own. Lets hope after doing this, we don't get the damage that some people have had!
Do you do your gen filter change yourself, if not, how much is the dealer charging you?

            Re: extra fuel filter

Just had our 20,000 kms service done on our GXL Diesel and checking under the bonnet the fuel filter was not changed. The one under the car (Fuel transfer system filter 8) was as per maintenance schedule but no mention of the main filter under the bonnet . Reading the maintenance schedule the fuel pump (diesel model) should be replaced at 150,000kms at a cost over $2k . This seems over the top as there is no scheduled replacement maintenance for the main fuel filter. According to the service department at Toyota the main filter is to be replaced when the dash light comes on. (Too late by then) I think Toyota has missed replacing the main filter in the hand book at 20,000kms as per 1HZ diesel motors.
Do Toyota do spell check on there Maintenance schedule hand books ?

              Re: extra fuel filter

              Great posts Gentlemen,

thanks to Rob Macca67- pics have convinced me the filter fits. i have bought one with spare elements and they are now in the post to me. as some have indicated, it is good and cheap insurance to protect the fuel pump, injectors and engine. the 230 filter stops both water and particles, just what i've been looking for.
on another note, i understand we also need Diesel with 50+ Cetane. BP Ultimate is the only company providing that, but only in SA! Vic, i was told by a BP manager will only have it from 2012. can someone confirm this?

              cheers

                Re: extra fuel filter

Have a read of the similar threads in the 120 section. With the more recent D4D they changed the under-bonnet filter/sedimenter. It does not require routine replacement or servicing. It only needs attention when the yellow warning light comes on. Some owners have opted to run a second water trap filter ahead of the factory unit just for the added peace of mind.

                    G'day RobM/All,
I'm close to ordering the Racor 230R Assembly and just checking into the filters and noticed that the R20T filter (pictured with the 230R) is a 10 micron filter. Was there another filter that fits the 230R that filters to 2 microns?

Should I be looking at 2 or 10 micron filters?

                    Thanks in advance

                      Re: extra fuel filter

                      Good day Rob 31,

i've looked at the catalogue. it indicates "S" for 2 microns, "T" for 10 microns. when i placed the order, i mentioned R230S and the elements are R20S for 2 microns.

i get them from overseas and get a really good discount. (this will upset the locals) but if i can save my hard earned for exactly the same product, why not?

                      hope this helps,

                      cheers,

Spoke to BP this morning and confirmed Victoria do not have Ultimate Diesel till next year. is Cetane important and why? if so, what and where can we find additives boosting Cetane levels?

                          cheers.

Probably same as 120: reserve to main, main to engine.
